Note: The thread currently has a limit of one post every two hours for non-mod users. Currently, this is hard-coded by the admins, but there are plans to give mods the ability to toggle it without admin intervention. After mods are given the ability to do that, the time limit may be further reduced or removed entirely.
This thread is for discussing the following topics:
- Questions and clarifications about the site's rules and policies pertaining to wiki editing, forum posting, trope launching, and so on.
- If you have an idea for a thread on another part of the forums but aren't sure if creating it would be allowed, feel free to ask here.
This thread is not for any of the following:
- Reporting complaints or concerns about specific moderation decisions (e.g. suspensions and thumps). Report these directly to the admins via the contact form
. Selecting "The Staff" sends your message to the admins only, without making it visible to moderators.
- Queries about thumps applied to your own forum posts, including contesting the validity of a thump. Reply to the relevant moderator via PM for these matters.
- Ban appeals (use the "Edit Banned" thread
in this forum).
- Reporting problems or requesting moderator action in the wiki or forums (use Ask The Tropers or Hollersnote or specialized threads such as "Locked Pages"
).
- Queries about locked On-Topic Conversations (OTC) threads or banned discussion topics. OTC has its own moderation discussion thread here
, and the latest statement on the locked US Politics thread
and other banned OTC topics is here
. Bluntly, when certain OTC threads and topics have repeatedly caused problems, we're not going to provide forum space to discuss them again until the moderation toolkit is equipped to handle those conversations.
- Cut List challenges and queries (they have their own thread here
).
- Requests for changes to the site's code or discussion about such changes, as mods cannot change the code; only the admins can do that. Please direct tech requests to Query Bugs or Tech Wishlist (for bug reports and suggestions for feature additions/changes, respectively), and take other tech-related discussion to the Changelog thread
.
- Crowner actions. Please use the holler function instead.
- Discussion about changing or implementing policies. Please use Wiki Talk for that. (Asking whether it's OK to make a specific thread is acceptable; using this thread in place of such a thread is not.)
- Asking about the whereabouts of inactive mods (or other inactive users) before they return, if they return at all. Use the Absent people thread
for discussing inactive users.
Posts that use this thread in place of the sections listed in the bulleted list above are off-topic.
We're aware that the Edit Banned thread has a Non-Indicative Name, due to it also covering non-editing suspensions. We're not sure whether the name for that thread can even be edited without breaking the special coding that keeps posting restricted to mods and suspended users, so we're leaving it alone for now, because better safe than sorry.

I'm going to do something I have never done before and crowdsource a reply to a suspended troper. Specifically, to this person
.
If I were my normal, snarky self I would issue a sarcastic retort and press the eject button on their seat. However, I'm aware that I can come across as overly hostile and this person has an issue with the treatment of religion on TV Tropes. As an atheist I have no sympathy at a personal level, but we're supposed to be inclusive here.
Y'all love popcorning Edit Banned, so I'd like to get a sense of what people would do if they were in my position. Ground rules: keep the snark off. Serious, non-judgmental answers only. We aren't playing gossip games.
Edit: We can handle the grammar issues. It's the "anti-anti-religion" thing that I want to be fair about.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
I don't feel I could answer to that comment, as I may be biased regarding the topic of religion on account of my being an agnostic theist who leans Lutheran Christian (I attend church and all that, but my actual beliefs are that the subject of the topic is unknowable.)
That said, here's the ATT
where they were reported if it means anything.

Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallEdit: Ignore because I didn't see that the grammar issues were already addressed in the Edit Banned thread. I'll put the original contents of this post in a folder.
They changed this sentence in an example:
To this sentence fragment:
Then they added more text, but still left it with bad grammar:

I got a rock for Halloween.Sorry, I should clarify: I have the grammar issues covered. It's their accusation that we are overly biased towards "anti-religion" that I'm debating how to respond to.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
Well, I guess you could say that I (phrased as another troper) am a Christian agnostic who attends church and personally believes in the existence of God and some type of afterlife, and that even a person such as myself believes that his edits are illegitimate and biased. Again, read the ATT, the specific accusations are there.

In my experience, people who claim they're the victim of bias against their religion, at least if they're of the majority religion in their area, which judging from the nature of their offending edits they are, see anything not biased in favor of their religion as biased against it.

My musician page
I agree.
Edit: Also, I'm an atheist, if that means anything regarding my agreement with ShinyCottonCandy's post. I probably should have said that before.

It depends IMO. There are a lot of people like that, but I feel that there are also people who do get attacked for their religion, even if they are in the majority. Reddit and their community's feelings about religion come to mind, I believe the atheism subreddit there got unpinned from the top of the website at one point for getting too toxic.
That said, this specific case (from what little I have read) does not in any way come across as discrimination against religion, but rather reverting biased edits. This guy was removing references to other religions from entries, and that's not kosher no matter what religion or lack thereof that you are a part of.
EDIT: I just wanted to clarify I am not attacking atheists or the non-religious at all, hell my beliefs are closer to agnostic than Christian, I'm just saying that what was being argued isn't always the case.

I think the removals of references to other religions (or lack thereof) are the main problem here.

I got a rock for Halloween.
Maybe Fighteer could ask why he was removing references to other religions? I didn't see a mention of that in the suspended troper's response.

Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallI think it is pretty clear that even if this guy has any valid arguments, he is playing the victim card unjustifiably due to his own acts of discrimination against other religions.
I'm a practicing Jew, btw.

Agreed.

Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallSince he's not just removing references to atheism, but other religions as well, we'd probably say something like:
"You seem to have an objection to the mere mention of religious viewpoints other than Christianity. This is a problem for several reasons, not least because those viewpoints do in fact exist and affect tropes in media, whether you agree with them or not. TVTropes isn't a Christian website, and trying to make it one isn't going to be tolerated."
(Would want to adjust it a bit to acknowledge that Mormonism is by most standards a type of Christianity...)
And obligatory "our religion for context" is esoteric nonsense not relevant to anyone not sharing this brain.

Suddenly I'm... still rotating Fallen London in my mind even though I've stopped actively playing it.![]()
I'm guessing their denomination claims that Mormons "aren't real Christians", and that's why they removed that example.
Incidentally, it seems they blanked their rant, possibly in response to this.
My musician pageI took a look at the ATT report and saw that they removed references to evolution, despite the existence of theistic evolution
, so their agenda is clearly creationist in addition to being against other religions and Christian denominations other than theirs.

I got a rock for Halloween.Oh, so there was a more interesting older version of that post. We only actually saw the post-edit version, but it seemed suspicious in context.
Suddenly I'm... still rotating Fallen London in my mind even though I've stopped actively playing it.They seem to have moved the rant up to their previous comment
On the subject of biases in how rules are applied I would go with.
If you want to challenge the team on how rules are enforced you can do that afterwards. Right now this discussion is about your breaking of the rules.
Then lay out what rules they’ve broken and how they need to act in the future.
By the way, I’d totally argue that TV Tropes at a minimum had an anti-religion bias in the past. Here’s the thing, I make that argument here when I think it’s resulting in unfair mod action, I don’t start trying to correct biased opinion statements made by editors.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranThey seem to be citing specific problematic examples, so another thing to point out is that they can't just go around deleting things without discussing them, or, at the very least, adding an edit reason explaining why. This whole thing is also them ignoring or downplaying all of their other agenda-based edits, which obviously do not have as much justification (or at least reason, if calling them justified is too generous).
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper Wall

I made a typo in a Cut List request I just made. I meant to say that Quotes.Cosmic Egg is a subpage for a troper page (Tropers.Cosmic Egg), since only TroperWall/ and Sandbox/ are valid namespaces for troper page subpages, but accidentally typed "trope page". Just wanted to clarify that because I didn't know about the Main.Cosmic Egg trope page until today, and a Quotes subpage would actually be acceptable for that page.
Edit: This ATT thread
is where the page was brought up; I linked to it in the cutlist reason, and I mentioned the typo in that thread.
