Note: The thread currently has a limit of one post every two hours for non-mod users. Currently, this is hard-coded by the admins, but there are plans to give mods the ability to toggle it without admin intervention. After mods are given the ability to do that, the time limit may be further reduced or removed entirely.
This thread is for discussing the following topics:
- Questions and clarifications about the site's rules and policies pertaining to wiki editing, forum posting, trope launching, and so on.
- If you have an idea for a thread on another part of the forums but aren't sure if creating it would be allowed, feel free to ask here.
This thread is not for any of the following:
- Reporting complaints or concerns about specific moderation decisions (e.g. suspensions and thumps). Report these directly to the admins via the contact form
. Selecting "The Staff" sends your message to the admins only, without making it visible to moderators.
- Queries about thumps applied to your own forum posts, including contesting the validity of a thump. Reply to the relevant moderator via PM for these matters.
- Ban appeals (use the "Edit Banned" thread
in this forum).
- Reporting problems or requesting moderator action in the wiki or forums (use Ask The Tropers or Hollersnote or specialized threads such as "Locked Pages"
).
- Queries about locked On-Topic Conversations (OTC) threads or banned discussion topics. OTC has its own moderation discussion thread here
, and the latest statement on the locked US Politics thread
and other banned OTC topics is here
. Bluntly, when certain OTC threads and topics have repeatedly caused problems, we're not going to provide forum space to discuss them again until the moderation toolkit is equipped to handle those conversations.
- Cut List challenges and queries (they have their own thread here
).
- Requests for changes to the site's code or discussion about such changes, as mods cannot change the code; only the admins can do that. Please direct tech requests to Query Bugs or Tech Wishlist (for bug reports and suggestions for feature additions/changes, respectively), and take other tech-related discussion to the Changelog thread
.
- Crowner actions. Please use the holler function instead.
- Discussion about changing or implementing policies. Please use Wiki Talk for that. (Asking whether it's OK to make a specific thread is acceptable; using this thread in place of such a thread is not.)
- Asking about the whereabouts of inactive mods (or other inactive users) before they return, if they return at all. Use the Absent people thread
for discussing inactive users.
Posts that use this thread in place of the sections listed in the bulleted list above are off-topic.
We're aware that the Edit Banned thread has a Non-Indicative Name, due to it also covering non-editing suspensions. We're not sure whether the name for that thread can even be edited without breaking the special coding that keeps posting restricted to mods and suspended users, so we're leaving it alone for now, because better safe than sorry.

So, I want to start a new thread in Yack Fest, called "Funny edit reasons". It's meant to share edit reasons you've used that are funny or odd.
Asking here because I think that would be a fun topic, but I don't know if that would be allowed.
Thanks!

If Aquaman is "Nobody's favorite superhero", then I am Odysseus. (They/Them) (Troper Wall)
I don't see why it would be a problem as long as it doesn't lead to insults toward other editors (which I'd imagine it wouldn't if the editors who left the edit reasons were intentionally trying to be funny, which is something that happens, and something I've done myself). We already have some funny edit reasons listed on the Funny.TV Tropes page, so a forum thread listing examples of funny edit reasons should also be fine (and personally, I think a Yack Fest thread is a better fit for that than a wiki page).
Edit: That, and we have a couple of existing threads for funny things on the site (Entries that made you go "lol" and Made of Forum Win), and posts in those threads generally haven't been problematic, so another thread for funny things on the site would probably be harmless.

I got a rock for Halloween.I am thinking about leaving tv tropes, or at least taking a long break pretty soon. Recently I made a list of potential future candidates for Star Wars magnificent bastards on a discussion page before being asked to make a copy for my personal notes before it was deleted for being too much like a sandbox for the inactive trope.
I was wondering if it would be permissible to pm my list to one or two other tropers I know for their personal reading (one of them sees it as a way to help consider what Star wars books to read in the future), as they have said they wouldn't repost the list anywhere on the site itself as long as you don't want new candidates for the trope. Please let me know if that would be acceptable or not.
And that reminds me: does the CM/MB moratorium apply to troper pages—as in, they may not be used to bypass the moratorium?
ETA: Self-redacted the second half because this should have been at ATT per the pinned post; now moved here
.

"Thing is, I believe that a single good movie will change your entire life." — Makima | aka Fox | he/she/theyAfter moderator discussion, TLP Guidelines have been updated. Specifically, this section has been reworded to adjust the tone:
- Don't Edit Other People's Drafts Without Asking:
- This is just being polite. Many TLP denizens are protective of their work and do not like it when other people mess with their drafts.
- Making major changes to a draft that doesn't belong to you is considered incredibly rude at the very best. If you try to be sneaky about it, it may even be considered vandalism.
- It's generally okay to correct small errors, like typos or formatting errors, on another person's draft. Just post a reply clearly stating what you were doing — that's just common courtesy.
The new version:
- Editing Drafts:
- Generally speaking, the owner of the draft should be the one to make edits. However, correcting things like spelling/grammar mistakes, formatting errors, etc., plus adding potholes in examples, can be done by other tropers. In this case, such edits should be announced in the draft's comments as a courtesy.
- Making major changes to a draft that doesn't belong to you is rude, and may even be considered vandalism depending on the edit(s). Always discuss any major changes that may need to be made.
Many thanks to Willbyr for the wording.

Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper Wall
That would be a question for the Changelog thread
or Tech Wishlist, since the admins are the only ones who have control over adding/removing/rearranging subforums.

I got a rock for Halloween.Just a general policy query that I am unsure about — is it appropriate to trope a Missing Episode in the pages of the primary work? This has come up due to a troper adding possible agenda-based examples
regarding the Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur (2023) episode "Gatekeeper", which centred around a transgender character and was likely cut due to political controversy. Some tropers have suggested cutting the examples in question as they relate to an unreleased episode, however there are other entries relating to the same episode already on the page. Should all of them be removed on this basis?
Whether content is considered in continuity, and thus main-page, or non-canon, and thus trivia, is highly dependent on the specifics of the situation. It's not something that can be answered universally.
If it is possible, in principle, to access the content, and the content maintains continuity with other episodes, then it should be fair game to trope. If it's a work with no continuity and the content is completely lost with no (legal) way to access it, then it would probably go under Trivia.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I guess it's similar to Unpublished Works, if it can be found it's tropable, but how the episode is listed depends on how Disney lists it, we even have pages for unaired pilots.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupRight. Let's say you have a serial work in which Episode 10 goes missing. If Episodes 11 and 12 refer to things that happened in Episode 10, then continuity is maintained and thus tropability is established.
But if nobody ever refers to Episode 10 and it doesn't matter to continuity, then troping it has no purpose.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
On that basis, I think examples for "The Gatekeeper" should be removed?
I'm a bit confused by this policy - aren't whether it's accessible and whether it's canonical separate issues? Should unreleased episodes be completely removed, separated to a different page, some other option? I'm also not really sure what you mean by "troping it has no purpose".
Although in this specific instance with the examples quoted on the ATT, those certainly seem agenda-based / possibly-ROCEJ-violating so the issue is kind of side-stepped for those ones.
Edited by HalfFaust on Apr 21st 2025 at 9:01:48 AM
The ROCEJ busting edits have already been removed, the confusion is over whether all examples relating to the Missing Episode should be removed.
Examples of and from content that has been Dummied Out, Deleted Scenes, Missing Episodes, etc., if we discuss them at all, belong in Trivia... unless I'm badly misremembering the most recent policy statements in that regard.
If something exists in a work's official continuity/canon, it is main-page material even if the source cannot be found, although examples should note this and state that the content in question exists only by reference.
- Below Decks Episode: While the episode itself has been lost to time, characters frequently recount events from S2E14: "They Aren't NPCs", which allegedly showcases a day in the lives of the minor cast members.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"When a thread is closed and moved to the morgue, the thread's and posts' links don't actually change, is that true?
Oo oo ah ah
They don't. If you follow image pickin threads you can also see that for yourself.
Edited by Amonimus on Apr 30th 2025 at 11:59:33 AM
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupLinks also remain valid if a page is moved in any other way (such as if a thread that was made on one part of the forums but fits better somewhere else is moved by a mod).
I got a rock for Halloween. Is there any indicator that messages sent through the contact form were actually received? Like an automated reply or just a "sent" mark?
I say this having just used it, didn't see any indicators, and may have sent the same message twice assuming it didn't go through.
Any issues concerning other tropers should be taken up via Ask The Tropers (flagged as private if you have concerns about that) or via Hollers. We do not respond to such requests via the contact form, especially if the email address used is not associated with your account, since we have no way to verify the authenticity of the message.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"To answer the question, not really. You get a reply by mail either at some point or never.

TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupIf it matters, neither we nor the admins received anything. Perhaps something to do with using an email not on the record, perhaps?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI don't think so, the email was the one in my profile. If it didn't go through, it was likely because I sent it through my phone in a section with spotty coverage.
I will try the contact form one more time through my actual computer later, this was just a caution so I wouldn't come across as spamming.

As an engineer, there's no such menu visible. If it should be separated from the mod functions is more to the Query Wishlist.
