Note: The thread currently has a limit of one post every two hours for non-mod users. Currently, this is hard-coded by the admins, but there are plans to give mods the ability to toggle it without admin intervention. After mods are given the ability to do that, the time limit may be further reduced or removed entirely.
This thread is for discussing the following topics:
- Questions and clarifications about the site's rules and policies pertaining to wiki editing, forum posting, trope launching, and so on.
- If you have an idea for a thread on another part of the forums but aren't sure if creating it would be allowed, feel free to ask here.
This thread is not for any of the following:
- Reporting complaints or concerns about specific moderation decisions (e.g. suspensions and thumps). Report these directly to the admins via the contact form
. Selecting "The Staff" sends your message to the admins only, without making it visible to moderators.
- Queries about thumps applied to your own forum posts, including contesting the validity of a thump. Reply to the relevant moderator via PM for these matters.
- Ban appeals (use the "Edit Banned" thread
in this forum).
- Reporting problems or requesting moderator action in the wiki or forums (use Ask The Tropers or Hollersnote or specialized threads such as "Locked Pages"
).
- Queries about locked On-Topic Conversations (OTC) threads or banned discussion topics. OTC has its own moderation discussion thread here
, and the latest statement on the locked US Politics thread
and other banned OTC topics is here
. Bluntly, when certain OTC threads and topics have repeatedly caused problems, we're not going to provide forum space to discuss them again until the moderation toolkit is equipped to handle those conversations.
- Cut List challenges and queries (they have their own thread here
).
- Requests for changes to the site's code or discussion about such changes, as mods cannot change the code; only the admins can do that. Please direct tech requests to Query Bugs or Tech Wishlist (for bug reports and suggestions for feature additions/changes, respectively), and take other tech-related discussion to the Changelog thread
.
- Crowner actions. Please use the holler function instead.
- Discussion about changing or implementing policies. Please use Wiki Talk for that. (Asking whether it's OK to make a specific thread is acceptable; using this thread in place of such a thread is not.)
- Asking about the whereabouts of inactive mods (or other inactive users) before they return, if they return at all. Use the Absent people thread
for discussing inactive users.
Posts that use this thread in place of the sections listed in the bulleted list above are off-topic.
We're aware that the Edit Banned thread has a Non-Indicative Name, due to it also covering non-editing suspensions. We're not sure whether the name for that thread can even be edited without breaking the special coding that keeps posting restricted to mods and suspended users, so we're leaving it alone for now, because better safe than sorry.

Just to be clear, no one was banned from this thread, it was just a three day suspension that was lifted today.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesWhich took how long to say after Kory was throwing around threats and shouting how none of it was his fault?
Someone with this short fuse and who is incapable of anything beyond a token apology shouldn’t be in charge

Still bad to punish people for daring to criticize an admin

"We'll meet again" | 🏳️⚧️Suspensions aren't even supposed to work like this on TVT. There's no set time limit for almost all of them; if you're suspended, you go to the suspension thread and you plead your case there. The suspension thread works on a case-by-case process.
In this case there was no chance to do that because the suspensions were handed out. Why? Kory wanted to throw his weight around.
This is further proof that Kory has neither the experience nor the temperament to be anywhere close to an effective mod.

Pretty much right away, actually, from what I saw in the Edit Banned thread.

I totally agree, but lets not let hyperbole detract from genuine criticism. People were temporarily suspended, not banned.
Are they? I thought I've seen such suspensions before. Suspensions on TV Tropes are generally used for anything from "I just want to have a talk with you about this" to "go and cool down for this amount of time and don't do it again".

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesAnd it is frankly troubling for Drew to be telling us that someone who straight up lies in his supposed apology “well he seems sincere, so please don’t call him a bigot.”
Here’s what we want, plain and simple: Kory does not moderate. He has neither the expertise, nor the temperament for it. And he proved that. How many edits did the users he was suspending and threatening have?
He was screaming “anyone else posts then I’m locking the thread and it’ll be your fault.” Why? Because people expressed how he made them unsafe. Way I see it is you have a chance to fix this and repair trust. Or you don’t anr you don’t realize the horrible damage you’ve done.
Kory isn’t even making a public apology because he’s shown he can’t even do that. We’ve seen what happens: when his apology isn’t accepted immediately l, he grows petulant and lashes out with consequences. He needs to be stripped of all authority here and made to only work on tech. That’s how you fix things with the community.

Literally why does that distinction matter? If anything that's more of a red flag because suspensions are specifically not supposed to work that way. You get suspended for a reason, you discuss that reason with mods, and then you're released when the mods decide the reason won't be a problem. You don't get temp suspended because that's not the point of suspension unless you're going for pure punishment, which is exactly what was happening here.
It is genuinely fascinating. The fractious TVT community is, from what I've seen, more or less universally in agreement that we do not want Kory as a moderator.
I agree that Kory should refrain from moderation (he is an admin, not a mod, after all). I think a much better role for him on this thread would be arbitration between users and mods, while leaving actual moderating to the mods.
If an admin needs to step in to moderate a post, that should be indicative of a serious problem with the mod team, implying that the mods are not dong their job properly. I don't think admins should let themselves get in that position unless it is absolutely necessary.

Actually, we do have temp suspensions. They are apparently common enough on OTC, for one.

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesYeah, after this entire mess? If you want an admin to do moderation, then have it be one that isn't him.
Why is Drew brought up? His handle is drewski, DevKlay is one of the developers
.
While I am usually forgiving, more and more evidence suggests to me that Kory is not a good mod.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."![]()
Correct, I think someone misread.
I would go farther and say that he has overstepped as admin and mixed roles that really shouldn't be mixed.

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesCan we just agree that the angrily suspending everyone was an abuse of power and stop the nitpicking?[
Yes, lets move on from that one.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesKory was untested as a mod and when his first test came he utterly failed. I do not trust him to moderate and frankly Klay's response to all this is making me question their ability as well
"We'll meet again" | 🏳️⚧️Remember everyone. On TV Tropes now? You can be a blatant bigot but if you lie well enough to the admins you won’t be punished if you’ve contributed enough edits. Even if the administration finds out there was a lie, they’ll still cover for the user and tell the user base to not call them a bigot.
What a great slogan. “We welcome bigots as long as they’re quiet enough about it.”

Replying to what Mighty Mewtron said as someone who vaguely remembers that time (I have been using it for 13 years on and off), the site was a legitimately toxic environment at the time, and it is something we don't want to return.
Cheeky but charming.I'm re-emphasising the community's demands (in Lighty's aforementioned words): Kory needs to be stripped of all authority here and made to only work on tech.
This is the only way I can see you beginning to mend things with the community.
Kory didn’t even communicate this. He was rude and dismissive of concerns, demanded any concerns come to him and told people to shut up about any concerns.
Pick a new point man, admins. One who isn’t a thin skinned bully
Edited by Lightysnake on Sep 11th 2023 at 10:08:08 AM
Lets leave the comparisons to dictators and billionaires out of the discussion, shall we?
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesSo here’s a test for the admins. You wanna know it mods are abusing their power? Here’s where an admin is.
Now do something about it or prove yourselves nothing but empty talk.
Edited by Lightysnake on Sep 11th 2023 at 10:10:06 AM

I’m sorry but it seems that you have an admin who flew off the handle, abused his power and honestly, Drew?
Saying “well he doesn’t seem like a transphobe!” When his own profile is beamoning the marginalizing of JK Rowling for her transphobia? When the user unequivocally lied to you, as has been uncovered? Why are you speaking over a transgender moderator on this?
Tv Tropes is facing risk of “the site that allows bigotry where once it was zero tolerance” and your chosen representative is a thin skinned loose cannon who had a freak out on any critique. If you want to keep Kory, let him stick to programming. He should have no power.
You, meanwhile, have without explanation destroyed the trust between authority and user base and that is genuinely a tragedy.
