Note: The thread currently has a limit of one post every two hours for non-mod users. Currently, this is hard-coded by the admins, but there are plans to give mods the ability to toggle it without admin intervention. After mods are given the ability to do that, the time limit may be further reduced or removed entirely.
This thread is for discussing the following topics:
- Questions and clarifications about the site's rules and policies pertaining to wiki editing, forum posting, trope launching, and so on.
- If you have an idea for a thread on another part of the forums but aren't sure if creating it would be allowed, feel free to ask here.
This thread is not for any of the following:
- Reporting complaints or concerns about specific moderation decisions (e.g. suspensions and thumps). Report these directly to the admins via the contact form
. Selecting "The Staff" sends your message to the admins only, without making it visible to moderators.
- Queries about thumps applied to your own forum posts, including contesting the validity of a thump. Reply to the relevant moderator via PM for these matters.
- Ban appeals (use the "Edit Banned" thread
in this forum).
- Reporting problems or requesting moderator action in the wiki or forums (use Ask The Tropers or Hollersnote or specialized threads such as "Locked Pages"
).
- Queries about locked On-Topic Conversations (OTC) threads or banned discussion topics. OTC has its own moderation discussion thread here
, and the latest statement on the locked US Politics thread
and other banned OTC topics is here
. Bluntly, when certain OTC threads and topics have repeatedly caused problems, we're not going to provide forum space to discuss them again until the moderation toolkit is equipped to handle those conversations.
- Cut List challenges and queries (they have their own thread here
).
- Requests for changes to the site's code or discussion about such changes, as mods cannot change the code; only the admins can do that. Please direct tech requests to Query Bugs or Tech Wishlist (for bug reports and suggestions for feature additions/changes, respectively), and take other tech-related discussion to the Changelog thread
.
- Crowner actions. Please use the holler function instead.
- Discussion about changing or implementing policies. Please use Wiki Talk for that. (Asking whether it's OK to make a specific thread is acceptable; using this thread in place of such a thread is not.)
- Asking about the whereabouts of inactive mods (or other inactive users) before they return, if they return at all. Use the Absent people thread
for discussing inactive users.
Posts that use this thread in place of the sections listed in the bulleted list above are off-topic.
We're aware that the Edit Banned thread has a Non-Indicative Name, due to it also covering non-editing suspensions. We're not sure whether the name for that thread can even be edited without breaking the special coding that keeps posting restricted to mods and suspended users, so we're leaving it alone for now, because better safe than sorry.

I think "ran away" is a bit strong. You are assuming that that's what he did—this actually isn't his first long break from the site.
I understand what he said was awful and I don't blame you for being upset but I truly do not believe his break was done out of malice or a desire to flee. Sometimes a lot of stuff just happens IRL.

Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallCrazy ghosted this thread for weeks after being caught lying. It was pulling teeth to get anything from the mods, let alone "okay, he's going to release a statement."
Then it ws "the statement is done" for a good stretch of time. "We're just reviewing it. Expect it Sunday."
Poof. This isn't one vanishing act, this is a culmination. he was running away before the break.
Edited by Lightysnake on Mar 7th 2023 at 5:57:20 AM
I do agree that the statement not being posted despite claims to the contrary is a problem—I'm just saying that it could be just as true that IRL stuff got in the way. IIRC the mods said Crazy himself had to make the statement—that leads credence to either theory.
Maybe both are true. I don't know.
Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallIt's a situation I don't feel other inactive mods are precedent for, the whole thing gave an iffy look and it's worth talking about.
Nah, the statement was done well before he vanished from the site. It was just "oh, the other mods want to review it" for a painfully long time. He had his chance.
the statement should be posted soon. Maybe it's a great explanation. The mod team decided closing ranks around him was more important than the issue at hand and insulted me for daring to raise it in a statement they have now made crystal clear was a team effort and cannot be laid at any individual's feet.
Crazy had a chance to address us. He lied. He had more chances. He refused. He wrote a statement. It was never posted.
It should be.

Seems rather pointless to call for retribution on an inactive mod's misdeeds if you ask me, especially since the drama at the start of 2023 has long abated with much-needed revisions put in place.
Not Crazy's. It "abated" because he vanished from the site. We haven't rectified this issue.
I'm not really fond of a policy of "if someone does something wrong and dodges accountability long enough, it's pointless to bring it up."
Edited by Lightysnake on Mar 7th 2023 at 6:09:51 AM
Then we bring it up if and when he returns.
If he's not here, it's largely irrelevant.
And the previous conversations seemed to reach a consensus (as with Fighteer) that making decisions about a mod without that mod being here to respond was problematic.
I have no idea what variety of real life issue is keeping him away, or for how long, and, frankly, that's none of our business.
Yeah I favor rehabilitative punishment over the retaliatory kind, and if Crazy isn't here to defend himself (or make a further case for why he should be demodded, should he show insufficient self-reflection in his responses), when all the other inactive mods get to be left alone including a few with their own questionable posting history, then it just feels like targeted vindictiveness rather than a just punishment, no matter how valid the initial grievance that started it.
It's not like he can abuse his current mod status for anything while away.

Him being kept away since January....3, 6, whatever? Sure.
His actions in the preceding weeks? Different story, IMO. I'm especially less than impressed that a grown adult man needs to have his hand held and walked through this issue by an entire team of people to begin with, which was a huge issue with the "statement" debacle.

No action will be taken regarding crazysamaritan's absence and we won't be revisiting this discussion until they come back.

Macron's notesWell, the standard procedure is just to use the other discussion venues we have. Besides the forums, there's also Ask The Tropers, PM'ing the other troper, and discussion pages.
Macron's notesQuestion. I know that this is two years old, and I apologize as it's not my intention to reopen old wounds, but has there been any updates regarding the Yack Fest issues
and how to deal with and reform them?

ᜇᜎᜈ᜔ᜇᜈ᜔|I DO COMMISSIONS|ᜇᜎᜈ᜔ᜇᜈ᜔I am not sure what exactly is being asked here but I feel that most if not all of the issues surrounding YF have been resolved by now. If reform is still needed, I am not sure what it would be for. There's also increased mod presence there too thanks to the team expanding.

Macron's notes
I agree, and on the subject of increased mod presence, the fact that a decent amount (if not most or even all) of the newer mods (us included) frequently post there (some since before becoming mods, while I first posted there in the middle of last year after a conversation regarding an Administrivia page came to my attention via the Outdated Administrivia Pages thread and just kind of ended up sticking around) is probably a factor.

I got a rock for Halloween.
Are you speaking hypothetically? I haven't seen any indication that the rules against shitposting haven't been working.
At most there are derails, but those are explicitly allowed by the forum rules
, unlike with the left side of the forums (particularly OTC):
Granted, we usually prefer to not let derails go too far (at least in threads with a defined subject, as opposed to more general-purpose threads), presumably to prevent them from turning into shitposting, but of the derails that happened this year (which there were probably a lot of since it's Yack Fest we're talking about), only one had to be stopped with mod intervention (when the Odd TV Tropes confessions thread temporarily got overtaken by video posts), while the others got back on track on their own.

I got a rock for Halloween. The mods work on an innocent until proven guilty basis. They wont do anything unless there is actual proof of an issue existing and then they act.
As long as this flower is in my heart. My Strength will flow without end.
Correct. There's no evidence that the shitposting rules haven't worked in the same sense that there's no evidence that the admins haven't been abducted by aliens. We don't take action based on hypotheticals.

I got a rock for Halloween.

Let’s start with the one who lied about giving cover to Holocaust denial and then ran away from accountability. His statement should be posted after this many months
