Note: The thread currently has a limit of one post every two hours for non-mod users. Currently, this is hard-coded by the admins, but there are plans to give mods the ability to toggle it without admin intervention. After mods are given the ability to do that, the time limit may be further reduced or removed entirely.
This thread is for discussing the following topics:
- Questions and clarifications about the site's rules and policies pertaining to wiki editing, forum posting, trope launching, and so on.
- If you have an idea for a thread on another part of the forums but aren't sure if creating it would be allowed, feel free to ask here.
This thread is not for any of the following:
- Reporting complaints or concerns about specific moderation decisions (e.g. suspensions and thumps). Report these directly to the admins via the contact form
. Selecting "The Staff" sends your message to the admins only, without making it visible to moderators.
- Queries about thumps applied to your own forum posts, including contesting the validity of a thump. Reply to the relevant moderator via PM for these matters.
- Ban appeals (use the "Edit Banned" thread
in this forum).
- Reporting problems or requesting moderator action in the wiki or forums (use Ask The Tropers or Hollersnote or specialized threads such as "Locked Pages"
).
- Queries about locked On-Topic Conversations (OTC) threads or banned discussion topics. OTC has its own moderation discussion thread here
, and the latest statement on the locked US Politics thread
and other banned OTC topics is here
. Bluntly, when certain OTC threads and topics have repeatedly caused problems, we're not going to provide forum space to discuss them again until the moderation toolkit is equipped to handle those conversations.
- Cut List challenges and queries (they have their own thread here
).
- Requests for changes to the site's code or discussion about such changes, as mods cannot change the code; only the admins can do that. Please direct tech requests to Query Bugs or Tech Wishlist (for bug reports and suggestions for feature additions/changes, respectively), and take other tech-related discussion to the Changelog thread
.
- Crowner actions. Please use the holler function instead.
- Discussion about changing or implementing policies. Please use Wiki Talk for that. (Asking whether it's OK to make a specific thread is acceptable; using this thread in place of such a thread is not.)
- Asking about the whereabouts of inactive mods (or other inactive users) before they return, if they return at all. Use the Absent people thread
for discussing inactive users.
Posts that use this thread in place of the sections listed in the bulleted list above are off-topic.
We're aware that the Edit Banned thread has a Non-Indicative Name, due to it also covering non-editing suspensions. We're not sure whether the name for that thread can even be edited without breaking the special coding that keeps posting restricted to mods and suspended users, so we're leaving it alone for now, because better safe than sorry.

I'm very sorry. To be clear, I'm not challenging your decision - I'm so very sorry. I just wanted to know what was behind your decision to clear my posts from the Rick and Morty thread. I reiterate, I'm not challenging your decision, and I'm very sorry.
My posts make considerably more sense read in the voice of John Ratzenberger. You were derailing the Rick and Morty thread by posting personal tangents that had little to do with the subject.

Macron's notesI'm not sure where else to post this.
I just changed my email address on this account to a newer one that I use more, and when I clicked on the verify email it said my new account was validated. I'm wondering if my account is considered new now even though my profile still says I've been active since 2017.
I'm just somewhat confused by that message.
“We’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.” - Lewis Carroll
I don't get the confusion, you definitely still have the 2017 account with just updated contact email. Validated means the changes are registered.
If you have further question, suggesting moving to Ask The Tropers instead of here.
TroperWall / WikiMagic Cleanup
Ok thanks. The confusion was due to the message the site gave me saying "Your new TV Tropes account is all set up." It's all cleared up now for me.
Sounds like a standard message oversight. I'd say put it on the bug fix list, but... yeah, there's a long list.

Your account's age still shows it as being much older than this year. Also, as mentioned this sort of question would probably be better suited to Ask The Tropers than this thread.
I just caught up on the new moderator guidelines - they're much-appreciated, and I hope it can foster a more understanding and less confrontational atmosphere between the users and moderators.
Okay so after having read 100+ pages of this thread to catch myself up I’d like to throw in my two cents. It’s a little late and I can’t imagine it’ll be worth much but here goes.
For whatever it’s worth, I absolutely think that Fighteer has regularly overstepped the limits of what would be allowed for a regular user. This issue seems to be fully settled, I’m just putting that out there first. In the course of reading this thread I’ve felt increasingly like it was worth saying something about a topic that’s been on my mind lately, though.
The entire reason I started posting here is because the quality of discussion you could find on these forums used to be significantly higher than what you’d find on most of the internet. This was a place you could actually outright disagree with someone and argue an issue without it immediately descending into mud slinging bullshit, and I believed this was due to the fact that these conversations and arguments were built on a mutual understanding and respect. However, at some point along the line this changed. The quality of conversation found here now is frankly not much different from what you’d find anywhere else. Attempts at conversation are frequently drowned out in page after page of pithy, context-free one liners dunking on easy targets. To tie this back into the Fighteer issue, when things do come to a head unfortunately there is a group of users here who have adopted an all or nothing approach to debate. Fighteer could be rude, and certainly overstepped his limits, but he also quite frequently made good points. For this, he was repeatedly marked as a bigot of various varieties, psychoanalzyed repeatedly, and generally demeaned by this particular group. I myself had to step back from OTC after these posters insinuated that I hated minorities, wanted LGBT people to die, and insisted that I state repeatedly in multiple conversations I participated in that I believed in equal rights for LGBT people as a precondition to my participation in said conversation. Speaking to you as a bisexual man in a committed relationship with another man, and not only that but one living in a red state where the risks I’ve been flippantly described as supporting affect me daily, that was unbelievably offensive and hurtful. I have seen this same behavior directed towards multiple other posters, not just myself. It’s not just about values, because the posters on the receiving end of this hostility almost always share the values of their attackers and the values being attacked vary wildly. It’s not about identity, because people freely guess at those in absence of information. It’s an environment of conformity. This is how we’ve ended up with the bland, contentless discussion I mentioned above. As it stands now, how many people do you see repeating anything other than consensus talking points in threads that were once lively back and forth debates? Maybe a handful?
I’m under no illusions that posting this will be particularly helpful, I just wanted to say my piece. I think there’s a value to informed, respectful debate on sensitive issues, but I’m not sure if that’s something that can be found here any more sadly.
They should have sent a poet.I think that has more to do with the polarization of American politics and the hardening of American discourse, with widening political and cultural divides and tribalism, than with Fighteer.
And I agree, some people are rather quick to accuse others of wanting minorities to die when they disagree with some opinion that doesn't match their own, and it is nothing less than a discussion killer.

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesI'm not going to get into your personal experience with the forums (I feel that's honestly a pretty big can of worms I'd rather not open at this moment), but I don't think this is a very good argument when people have posted multiple examples of Fighteer saying insensitive or demeaning things that at best show a lack of tact and care for certain groups of people. To bring one example to mind, there isn't really any psychoanalysis required to see that someone dismissing concerns of transphobia from democratic politicians and saying that attitude is to blame for Trump's rise isn't exactly a great look.
This doesn't represent the majority of Fighteer's posts or anything but the idea of him being at best insensitive did not come out of thin air or people reading his posts in bad faith.
Not that I necessarily expect someone to remember all the posts with receipts or even read them all as this is a long thread with a prolonged situation, but as the facts stand I just think this is a bad read of the situation.

As long as this flower is in my heart. My Strength will flow without end.archonspeaks, this topic is not to throw shade and your fellow tropers under the bus.
I also dont appreciate you calling out Fighteer's critics when the critics showed objectively what he did wrong. You could have done without that comparison and I would be more sympathetic to you if you did.

As long as this flower is in my heart. My Strength will flow without end.
I’m pretty sure you’re talking to the wrong person there Aegis
No, I am not. I actually would have eaten up his post and be majorly sympathetic to it had it not:
1-Defended Fighteer 2-Throw his critics under the bus.
As long as this flower is in my heart. My Strength will flow without end. That sounds like it corresponds with another troper's post though, not harryhenry.
Do you mean archonspeaks?

Wait did he quote someone else? Because this is his post.
OMG YOU GUYS WERE RIGHT. I meant archonspeaks. I saw his name over the post and got confused.
harryhenry I owe you the most BIG AND MAJOR apology ever sorry.
As long as this flower is in my heart. My Strength will flow without end.The reality is, Fighteer caused a lot of trouble, and yes, sometimes he was responded to poorly(including stuff that broke this site's normal rules) at times. It's part of what happens when people are inflammatory to others. They respond in kind.
Which only made things even harder to handle towards him. That's just part of the history. The best thing to do is learn from what happened, not chastise others. We're aware it was handled very poorly on many ends.
That said, that's over with too, and the user is already basically on thin ice for a history of trouble. It didn't matter that we had issues on the other end either. What does matter is the attempt to resolve it worked a lot better than before at least. A huge step up from before. I don't know if the plan is for him to definitely appeal here, definitely appeal in the Edit/Banned thread, or whatnot(if I remember right, the decision by the rest of the Moderation on how to handle Fighteer is still being discussed), but either way, something major happened.
Shadow?
And, just to add to this -
He's left the site, and whatever decision the mods come to is largely hypothetical (and may not be public) until he returns.
Which seems fair, in that he should probably hear the detail before we do.
That said, it does make me wonder about policy on inactive mods - if a mod (in good standing or otherwise) leaves the site for, say, a year... should they automatically keep mod role/powers when they return?
Or should there be a point where it becomes "you're welcome back, but while you remain dormant, mod powers are switched off"?
I agree, I don't think we need to relitigate Fighteer's case at this moment.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest times![]()
Considering moderating the site is voluntary, I'm against automatically stripping inactive mods of their mod privileges, because making actively moderating a condition for keeping them would ruin the point of making it voluntary. Plus, that would mean unnecessary work for the admins when it comes to enforcing that. I think the only reason a mod should lose mod privileges is either if they resign or if they run out of chances when breaking the code of conduct enough times and have to be stripped of their mod privileges.

I got a rock for Halloween.
I guess I'm just thinking of the situation on other sites (and for work etc.) where, for security as much as any other reason, inactive logins eventually get some temporary limits placed on them. Less of an issue with normal tropers but seemed like a valid concern for mods.
It wasn't intended as a suggestion of permanent de-modding, just a step that might lead to a "welcome back" conversation (and any updates they need to hear on changes to customs/policies) before they resume.
But that assumes de/re modding is not a major issue in its own right, which doesn't seem to be the case from previous posts.
Is it fair to assume that if an inactive mod does return after a long absence they are, however informally, encouraged/expected to check in with the team?

I don't know if there's any procedure for when an inactive mod starts moderating again. After nombre resigned, lu started moderating again for a while to lighten the workload until more mods were recruited, but I don't know anything about the behind-the-scenes stuff from when that happened because I wasn't a mod at the time.
I got a rock for Halloween.Archon: I feel the dogpiling was unfair, as it usually is in most cases. Does more to hurt your look and case than anything. It was unfair to you as a bisexual man.
That said. Fighteer was made to leave for a pattern of repeated misconduct that had been angering and upsetting users for many years, making them feel unsafe on the forum, backed up by huge amounts of evidence submitted of said misconduct, and a greater problem of the mods being unable to take proper action and even defending him. Both of which have been solved with a new mod code and Fighteer's own decision to leave, so everyone actually went home satisfied.
I was there when you got dogpiled and didn't see the people in that discussion present in this thread.
There's a new mod code and just because Fighteer was the most present in OTC, doesn't mean the other mods won't do their jobs just as well.
Anyway, the matter is completely settled now and everyone left happy.

I didn't even think of this thread. Yes, this thread would be a good idea.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.
