Note: The thread currently has a limit of one post every two hours for non-mod users. Currently, this is hard-coded by the admins, but there are plans to give mods the ability to toggle it without admin intervention. After mods are given the ability to do that, the time limit may be further reduced or removed entirely.
This thread is for discussing the following topics:
- Questions and clarifications about the site's rules and policies pertaining to wiki editing, forum posting, trope launching, and so on.
- If you have an idea for a thread on another part of the forums but aren't sure if creating it would be allowed, feel free to ask here.
This thread is not for any of the following:
- Reporting complaints or concerns about specific moderation decisions (e.g. suspensions and thumps). Report these directly to the admins via the contact form
. Selecting "The Staff" sends your message to the admins only, without making it visible to moderators.
- Queries about thumps applied to your own forum posts, including contesting the validity of a thump. Reply to the relevant moderator via PM for these matters.
- Ban appeals (use the "Edit Banned" thread
in this forum).
- Reporting problems or requesting moderator action in the wiki or forums (use Ask The Tropers or Hollersnote or specialized threads such as "Locked Pages"
).
- Queries about locked On-Topic Conversations (OTC) threads or banned discussion topics. OTC has its own moderation discussion thread here
, and the latest statement on the locked US Politics thread
and other banned OTC topics is here
. Bluntly, when certain OTC threads and topics have repeatedly caused problems, we're not going to provide forum space to discuss them again until the moderation toolkit is equipped to handle those conversations.
- Cut List challenges and queries (they have their own thread here
).
- Requests for changes to the site's code or discussion about such changes, as mods cannot change the code; only the admins can do that. Please direct tech requests to Query Bugs or Tech Wishlist (for bug reports and suggestions for feature additions/changes, respectively), and take other tech-related discussion to the Changelog thread
.
- Crowner actions. Please use the holler function instead.
- Discussion about changing or implementing policies. Please use Wiki Talk for that. (Asking whether it's OK to make a specific thread is acceptable; using this thread in place of such a thread is not.)
- Asking about the whereabouts of inactive mods (or other inactive users) before they return, if they return at all. Use the Absent people thread
for discussing inactive users.
Posts that use this thread in place of the sections listed in the bulleted list above are off-topic.
We're aware that the Edit Banned thread has a Non-Indicative Name, due to it also covering non-editing suspensions. We're not sure whether the name for that thread can even be edited without breaking the special coding that keeps posting restricted to mods and suspended users, so we're leaving it alone for now, because better safe than sorry.

And when the user expressed that the mods happily provided an accommodation that addressed the users issues. The way Crazysamaritan adapted the system to meet a person’s needs while not breaking it is actually a pretty beautiful example of what in U.K. law is called a Reasonable Adjustment, which is something people with disabilities are entitled to under our Equalities Act.
So yes there’s probably a bit of tidying that could be done, the What To Do If You Are Suspended page having a little section explaining why the system operates the way it does would certainly be nice, but that feel like it’s all we need out of this if the mods are good to keep giving Reasonable Adjustments with things like individual posts and recaps of a person’s appeal journey.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranJust an FYI to the mods regarding rileybrant20 getting suspended
, they did also send me a PM, which wasn't harrassing, but accusing me of holding a grudge against them, in response to this query
.
I realize I was getting a little emotionally invested there, and I apologize for that.

I didn't choose the troping life, the troping life chose me
I saw it because I checked their PMs after they PMed me to bug me about suspending another user (which I didn't do), and the PMs they sent to us plus a third PM influenced the decision to issue a PM suspension.
Either way, the post you linked to isn't saying they were harassing you; it says they were harassing me in an attempt to get someone else suspended. The part about the PM to you simply said they were accusing you of holding a grudge, which lines up with your summary.

I got a rock for Halloween.Umm, shouldn't both Spukikitty's and Laptop Guy's lattest comment in the EB thread
have been thumped? After all, one of the rules of said thread is to not comment about what somebody else said, as seen here:
We were thinking of thumping them but I ended up making a mod post about multiposting/impatience. I'll just thump them to make the message clear.

Macron's notesWhy was the cut request for VisualNovel.Futadom World Binding Sim declined? I know the thread wasn't linked, but it's still a stub with only two non ZCE examples, as one mod pointed out
, so the porn issue aside... it should've been cut anyway.
Because between that and the character page it's not clear that it's actually just two. And porn requests need to be filed on behalf of a 5P ruling, not one troper's opinion.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWell, I mean, the P5 barely exists anymore, so that last part is kinda completely impossible. Putting that aside, though, the stub issue still holds true.
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallI guess you can merge back the characters page, then comment out Zce tropes before cutting.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupIsn't it time to kill the P5 outright? We did have a thread on replacing it, but I don't know where the effort went.
There was a thread for this here
but the changes we wanted require admin coding. Until that's done, there's nothing we can really do about the backlog.
Hold off on cutting YMMV.Gangsta Granny.
The ban-evader's only edit to that page was crosswicking an example to the main page, and I want to be sure it isn't someone else's.
On second thought, cut it, since it is a ZCE.

Super quick question: how do you report/holler P Ms?
Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.PM a mod or write in Ask The Tropers that you have a concerning PM without revealing its contents.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupIf you decide to use ATT, remember to mark the query as private so that only mods can see it.

Macron's notesSo I think it’s worth us having a discussion about the COVID thread in OTC. While Synchronicity seems to have calmed it down again, there’s a nasty trend emerging.
The continuously hostile tone being taken with troopers who disagree with the thread’s more local posters is regularly descending into personal attacks, even when it doesn’t there’s a continuously assumption of bad-faith and any stem tone is taken in the worst possible way. It’s tiring to read through makes me at least not want to post there, I doubt I’m the only one.
As the mods seem to have decided not to ban the people pushing to thread into being a hostile environment (or least nothing has been announced in thread, though I realise that’s not always done), I think it’s worth having a discussion here about how the thread should be managed and what should be done.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranSilas, do you have any examples of this hostility? For people like me that don't frequent the COVID thread I meant.
I won't name names, but two of the primary instigators have a history of this kind of behavior and have probably been banned at least once in the past for repeated failure to interpret others' posts in good faith or to present their own points in a manner that looks like good faith.
To avoid making this a call-out of specific posters I don’t want to give specific examples, but a look at the last couple pages
of the thread should give an example. Generally it’s a dismissive and very angry attitude to any difference of opinion or even differ being experience/perspective.
It’s connects in with the earlier problem we had, where a chunk of people were using the thread as a place to vent about groups opposing safety measures/worry about COVID, rather than a place to actually discuss COVID.
I understand that people are still anxious about COVID, but the thread should be about discussing COVID and COVID measures, not validating people’s anxiety.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranThe previous discusssion was brought up in the mod chat earlier, but it's been kind of a slow day (and last week was kind of a slow week), so it might take us a while to work things out.

I got a rock for Halloween. As a lurker/occasional poster, I think an unavoidable part of the problem is that a lot of the news reports and such that are linked only cover how the pandemic is going in Europe/the US and tropers not from those places are upset about the disparate coverage, and that translates into them being upset on the thread whenever statements like "COVID is manageable according to [data or personal experiences from European countries and/or the US]" are made.
Now obviously everyone should make an effort to remain civil, but I do think a large part of it is people simply not looking for data beyond that of their own country's for whatever reason.
So, let's hang an anchor from the sun... also my TumblrWe decided not to do anything at the moment since things seem to have calmed down, so send hollers if anything else comes up.
I got a rock for Halloween.A moderation question out of interest, how does a Holler work technically? I have a few theories on how the messages are recieved, but a concrete idea would be helpful to know.
TroperWall / WikiMagic Cleanup

edit: This is getting kind of off-topic, so it may be preferable to use PMs if further discussion is needed. I can just edit this post to put a link to the thread if it gets created.
I'm glad I had this conversation and some time for this to settle in, because I think I have a better understanding and appreciation for the appeal system now. It may look messy and have room for improvement but if it works then it works.
