Mobius Final Fantasy takes the cake with its protagonist named "Wol".
Though it's at least justified. It's short for "Warrior of Light" as per his role in the prophecy and he's a literal Blank slate who has no identity or memories of his own. He literally exists to fulfill said prophecy. Ironically, he's one of the only Blanks who is able to realize that this whole situation sounds suspicious.

Disgusted, but not surprisedNo, it's accurately translated. The Japanese name is Battsu, which doesn't have the drawn out 'a' sound.
Bartz is a Dub Name Change made for fairly obvious reasons.

Oh. Oooooooh.
HA!
So as much as i love the XIV references in this trailer, i would hope that this actually isn't actually connected to XIV either as a earlier or future time in the Source or a shard.
Like every mainline FF game deserves to have it's own identity and not have the baggage that comes with sharing a mythology with previous games.
This should be XVI, not a XIV side story.
But please add Au Ra.

"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"That never stopped X Ii which is set in Ivalice. Of which Matsuno games are some of the inspiration for Yoshida
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.
Yeah but technically Ivalice is sort of an exception, plus XII is the ONLY one to take place in Ivalice, Tactics is a side game technically.
Plus like XIV is a celebration to Final Fantasy as a whole, so it can get away with some of that.
The premise is Ivalice in Hydaelyn, but not literally the same Ivalice.
"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"
x(however many)
"YES!" He must never know...
Real talk, I like how this would be all of the first Final Fantasy game outside of MMO entries since 5 to have a strict fantasy setting, with no Dungeon Punk in sight.
The powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse. The medieval setting is an interesting change of pace for a single-player FF installment. Not sold on the main character yet. But, I will definitely play this in the future. After I finish XIII-2, Lightning Returns, XII Zodiac Age, XV, and VII Remake of course.
The world is cruel yet so very beautiful. My guess from the trailer is that the protagonist is going to host Ifrit, Joshua is going to be a Tragic Villain, and the host of Shiva is going to be the main female lead (who the older protagonist develops an attachment to due to his guilt about failing Joshua). Seems like the obvious setup here.
What's precedent ever done for us?Also, its entirely possible some of the stuff in XIV was an intentional Call-Forward to XVI. XIV is the super crossover game, and Yoshi-P could see what's coming down the pieline.

Kazuya Takahashi (who worked on a few games beforehand and most recently XIV)
has been confirmed as the character designer for this game apparently.
People who like to invoke No True Scotsman on whatever newer game they don't like for being "too sci-fi/(replace with chosen disparaged quality of newer game) compared to the older games" conveniently forget what the older games actually were.
So, let's hang an anchor from the sun... also my TumblrThe trailer looked pretty interesting, but the setup felt so...FFXV for some reason. The Crystal being a source of power causing all-out war, the summons being related to it, its protection holding some blight at bay...
On the other hand, the Japanese trailer makes it clear this is a story about severing the dependence on the crystals, so this may be the first time (second time if you consider deifacted nethicite the equivalent of crystals) where the crystals are on the opposite side.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerSo I’ve seen some people worry about the lack of party members.
I’ve watched the trailer enough times to finally catch this, but if you look at the very first shot of actual gameplay in the trailer (around 1:20) you’ll see another swordsman dude off to the right facing in the monster’s direction.
That said it’s hard to tell if this actually is a party member, a guest, or just some kind friendly NPC. He does look admittedly a bit generic.
I’m hoping they have more to show in this regard, and I’m also one of those people who wouldn’t look forward to another sasuagefest.

You know what I’d love to see? A Badass Grandma party member. That’s something we’ve never had in this entire series
And also yeah, complaining about what is or isn’t Final Fantasy is seriously redundant at this point given how the series reinvents itself with every new entry.
