Torhild Hedinfal

So, Zyan and Freana were a thing? Or a thing in the making, interesting. Torhild decided not to tease them by asking if they wanted some alone time and just listened to them with a little smile while Vivien talked about his home.

"I see what you mean~" She said and smirked in response to his indication of draconic heritage. "I think I remember Merkinheimr from my maps..."

And then Freana's conversation turned to her job and she had to compare the people's reaction to spooky ghost stuff with her dancing, in a particular manner.

"Sounds like we missed quite a sight" Torhild chuckled nudging Vivien in the side, hoping to interrupt an attempt at stoicism on his part so she could guess which description he was paying attention to, assuming he heard her.

Zyan Zyat

“Well now ain’t that an image.” His tone was playful and the grin that followed even more so. He chuckled a little and unfolded his arms again as he gestured. “I think the general idea is today was long for everyone so let’s go get something to eat?”

And to make sure he wasn’t playing favorites he turned to both Vivien and Torhild and gestured. “Wouldn’t mind getting to know new friends over some food eh?”

Freana

"Darn straight." She chuckled a bit too, but her mind had already wandered. That whole thing with the ghost was sure to haunt her for the next week. Maybe the others too. But it was meeting that other Artic on the train that really stuck out...

...but that would have to wait. Zyan had already brought them back to their new friends, and while she was eager to know both of them a bit better, she'd be lying if he hadn't killed the moment.

"Sounds good to me. Don't think I've had a real meal since Skollmark. Think they'll let us pop open a couple kegs for this shindig?"

Vivien Solkish

Vivien, not expecting the sudden move from Torhild, yelped as the fellow halfbreed nudged him, his attention quickly snapping to the question she'd asked - though before he could stutter out a response, Zyan and Freana's comments gave him an out as he quickly tried to compose himself.

"Y-Yeah, some food would be... It'd be nice, yeah. Yeah."

Torhild hadn't expected Vivien to react quite that much and smirked as he struggled with the question, but she let it go as the conversation moved on, not wanting to cross the line between teasing and tormenting, and nodded "We picked up some top shelf cider with our reward, we could have a few drinks here if there's nothing good with dinner"

"Not bad! Guess you've got good taste, huh?"

She gave Torhild a smirk, but soon glanced at Vivian's stutter. "Hey, you okay? Seem a bit shook up. Wasn't anything we said, was it...~?" Truth be told, she had a pretty good idea, but wanted to see if she was on the money.

‘Worried about you’, those words rang in the young man’s ears. Nobody had ever worried about him, not outside of family at least.

Lac feels his vision blur slightly. Tears? He blinks then away, disguising dabbing them away with adjusting his hood.

“T-They…do seem like a good lot…Ms. Auer…Ms. Hedinfal…everyone.”

He chuckles, “Thank you Sir Al…” he shakes his head, “…thank you…S-Shard.”

Vivien Solkish

The already somewhat flustered state Vivien had reached wasn't helped one bit by Freana's tone, reducing him to another moment of being a stuttering mess before he composed himself a bit again.

"Nothing. Nothing at all. That you said. Nothing that you said at all. Just. A long day, is all. Just a long day. I'd never be shaken. Especially not by this."

The claim... Fell rather flat, honestly, especially with the rapid-fire way he spoke, clearly looking for some kind of escape from the situation - which quickly came to mind a moment later.

"So, wasn't it time for food? I think it's time for food."

Before even waiting for a response, he was off in the direction he assumed was towards food.

Verona Auer

Verona held Sigi's gaze for a long moment, lost for words. She wanted to tell Sigi that she understood, that she thought she felt it too, but her breath caught in her throat for reasons that were, for once, unrelated to the presence of magic.

You're a lot braver than I am, Sigi. For now, at least.

When Verona finally spoke, it was at a volume only barely above a whisper.

"If you do, uh, write it down, sometime...I think I'd really like to read it."

At that point, Pick attracted her attention, and she was both disappointed and a little bit relieved at the excuse to dispel the suddenly intense atmosphere between herself and Sigi.

Verona hadn't realized that her eyes had continued to betray her, but she couldn't bring herself to feel too bad about it when Pick pointed it out. He was right, after all; they were happy tears. Still, she felt emotionally exhausted, like her energy was leaking right out of her tear ducts.

So when Pick touched her hand and smiled, looking so pleased to be with their group (to be spending time with me of all people) no one could blame her for giving up on words entirely and throwing her arms around him in a bear hug, regardless of the inconvenience of their seated positions. And if she took the opportunity to wipe her eyes on his tunic while she was at it, well, hopefully he wouldn't notice.

Sieglinde von Brandt

“D'awwwwwwww...~” Sieglinde couldn't help but whisper to herself, watching with a grin as Verona practically hugged the stuffing out of Pick. She admittedly tried to resist doing the same, but she soon found herself squeezing them both anyways—only for her to overhear the others and pull back with a sudden ‘ooh!’

“Hey, you guys hungry? We should join 'em~” she motioned to the rest of the group, quickly scrambling up onto her feet. “I'm starving! Let's go~”

Part of her wished that intense atmosphere could've lasted a little longer. Another part of her was willing to get away from it all too quickly. Either way, she flashed a sunny smile at Verona and Pick before darting off, waiting for no-one. She wondered if they could catch up.

The question is, how much does she want to...~?

Hand over his stomach he followed after Vivien, but did keep note of what Freana commented on him being adorable. He mused to himself, was he jealous?

Nah. Couldn’t be. He wasn’t the type. He was confident he wasn’t. Even as his tail wrapping around his leg a little too tight for him to ignore it. He’d just.,.need to keep an open mind. Yeah, that’s it.

Torhil Hidenfal

Torhild was already smiling from Freana's interest in drinking later, and grinned as she watched Vivien walk away to hide his clear embarrassment "Mmm, absolutely adorable~ I hope you don't mind sharing, Freana"

Her tail wagged as she entertained the idea of seeing how well Vivien handled his drink, but there were others who needed a drinking buddy too... Lac'ner, for instance, definitely needed help loosening up. Perhaps Shard as well, despite how cheerful he was on the return trip. And, seeing Zyan's reaction to Freana's obvious interest (playful or otherwise) in the half fenrir, perhaps him as well.

Torhild couldn't do much if Zyan was hoping for a more serious relationship, but she brushed her tail against him as she passed as a friendly gesture while she passed in search of the dining hall. "Starving, they don't actually serve horse around here, do they?"

17 January 1028 S.C (Since Creation), 8:37 PM, Ainsworth International Adventuring Academy Grounds

The next couple of days rolled by quickly, filled with rather mundane requests and more lessons from the likes of Maya, Mekel and the now-arrived Wenzel. The Bogovi man was exceptionally tall, even for a Bogovi, the scars of age lining his face framed in short, midnight hair. His appearance carried both an aura of a man who was healthy as an ox yet sickly as a withered plant, somehow at harmony with his rugged, honed physique. Indeed, even now he sat quietly at one of the impromptu feasting tables set up on the grounds, quietly sipping at some water while others talked around him, joined in the silence by Mekel. They would occasionally chime up and talk amongst the others, or between themselves.

Bonfires and torches littered the ground of the Academy, standing guard against the cold bite of the evening. The first night of academy-organized meals had been repurposed as a celebratory opening night by some of the students, already organizing into committees and clubs. Music blared from several of the students, entertaining their groups, a rising cacophony of songs beating out the din of laughter, conflict and drunken revelry. One of the sparring fields had been repurposed as a fight club, with a betting pool run by everyone's favourite half-Dragonfolk instructor, bringing in the money with a intoxicated look on her face, watching the matches go down with the widest grin on her face between loud guffaws and deep chugs of her flagon. The crowd favourite tonight seemed to be a red-headed Alvar girl clothed in simple, form-fitting garb, currently pummeling the lights out of a Bogovi pinned underneath her with her gloved hands, fingers exposed and swollen. With the telltale two-tap of submission on her shoulder, she let up, rising off the battered giant with hands held high in triumph, before helping pull her opponent to his feet and back into the crowd. Off to the side, one of the bards, a Piscean man playing a flute, watched her intensely as she got back into the ring. Unlike most of the others, he seemed to be rather plainly clothed, wearing tights and a vest, with boots so tight they may as well have been socks. The mark of a Piscean who came from Charybdis' many city-states underneath the sea's surface, where loose clothing only hindered swimming ability.

On one side of the grounds, near the wall, an impromptu stall had been set up, with Mrs Cassia and several volunteers tending to several pots, spits and fires underneath the roof. The elderly Terran woman whipped her crew into a model of efficiency, with the workers flowing between workstations like calm water, each knowing their places and when to be there. The groundskeeper saw the crowds before her with a motherly smile on her face as she served up plates, bowls and flagons.

Principal Alexander, meanwhile, was nowhere to be found, but the glow of candlelight came through his office window. Probably busy with paperwork.

Sieglinde von Brandt

Sieglinde's face was best described as carrying an expression of pure enchantment as she airily danced around the grounds where the celebrations were being held. On the borderline of a sensory overload, she let the sights and sounds carry her from place to place, almost unconscious in her drifting and marvelling at all there was to experience.

Even the fighting, yes. As much as she'd usually shy away from it, she whooped and cheered for the girl in red as she defeated her opponent, sending a salute of both respect and pity towards the battered Bogovi who'd lost the fight. Though her gaze lingered on the combative girl and her outfit, she soon cleared her throat and disappeared into the crowd again, now attracted to the musicians instead.

Of course sitting at a feast table hadn't even crossed her mind yet. She was so enthralled by the metaphorical sprinkles on top that she hadn't even touched the rest of this dessert. But if she was hungry, she didn't care, as she sat cross-legged near the musicians and fished out her notepad to sketch out their instruments.

That, and she hummed along with them of course. She didn't sing, as there was enough of that going on anyway. A part of her wondered if so many people singing the same tune at once would shatter some of the instruments.

She decided she was just being silly, and so began to think about Verona instead.

Freana

The last couple of days had kept Freana busy, but she used what little time she had to her advantage. She'd started reading up on the more remote regions of Fenir and their associated religions, forcing herself to pay attention instead of throwing the books out the window in frustration. She hadn't become an Artic priestess overnight, but she was learning more about them and the snowy wilderness than she ever had on the streets.

She'd also made some changes to her magic. She had focused less on physical spells such as Body or Transmutation, and more on Water and Life. Water was something she was shockingly good at, particularly anything involving ice, but Life felt... appropriate. If this was going to be her profession, then Life magic seemed essential. But it was more than getting into the role. Whether it was her own ingenuity or divine providence, she'd thought of some devious ways to use the two together, all but eager to give them a go.

But for now, she put all that on hold. Instead of reading or practising her magic, she hovered near the fight club, holding a flagon in one hand and a big meaty drumstick in the other as she watched the bloodshed ensue. It was all good fun, but she kept a close eye on the betting pool. She was eager to hedge her bets and make a killing, but she wanted to size up the competition before making commitments. If one of her classmates saw fit to enter, she'd back them all the way, but most of them were spectators at this juncture.

Pick

The last several days had been uneventful. Pick continued to practice with his magic; every moment in which he wasn't busy with anything else was spent in meditation, focusing on the movement of energies. Rift, predictably, was the easiest for him to use. Body was much harder for him. Annoying, since Body was vital for a good swordsman, but something he could work around. He'd already been considering alternative methods to enhance his physical combat skills.

Manipulation of space could, in theory, be used to indirectly manipulate force. Gravity was simply bent space, after all. It would be a little bit complicated, but Pick had natural aptitude for Rift, and unlike Shard was endowed more with control than with raw power.

Experiments in attempting to fly by manipulating gravity were thus far unsuccessful, but Pick was certain he'd figure it out soon. And he found he enjoyed the feeling of the Rift. He'd dreamt one night of leaving Menagerie altogether, and floating through the endless stars between realities. It was a nice dream.

For now, though, he wanted to learn. So he'd sat outside the fighting ring, observing the bouts while picking at a bowl of stew. Freana was nearby, and he'd given her a curt nod in greeting, but his attention was focused on the fiery Alvar girl. He took note of her movements, how she acted and reacted, and tried to inscribe each punch into his memory.

Pick had no idea if she was good at fighting, mind, what with having no experience himself. But he could learn, and refine himself as much as needed. So he kept his eyes on the fighting even as he ate, barely even blinking.

As the others in his dorm might have realized by now, this was a state Pick could remain in for hours if no one interrupted him.

What is so amusing about this? Why do you take lives? How can you forget?

Verona Auer

Verona had spent the past several days in a generally jovial mood. She still found the lessons with Mekel unnerving, and as a result she hadn't actually managed to learn much from them, but otherwise she thought she was doing surprisingly well. She'd skipped out on the requests from the bounty board for the past few days, worried that whatever work was involved would either be hideously dull or hideously depressing, like Etruria had been. Instead she'd spent some of her free time looking at her fancy new deck of cards, memorizing the rules of the game, and putting off writing a letter to her parents.

Also, she'd begun a Project. A Secret Tunnel Project. For an adventuring academy, Ainsworth's was sorely lacking in cool architectural mysteries, and that simply could not stand.

In short, things had been going very well for Verona in the past few days, so it was no surprise that the evening of the feast found her in extremely high spirits.

"Pick!"

Verona, flushed and inexplicably disheveled, rushed up to her little friend and leaned down to give him a friendly tap on the head, only to pause mid-motion. She had almost forgotten that her hands were both occupied by two generous flagons of cider, and she giggled as she realized she had almost poured one of them on Pick's head in her enthusiasm.

It was possible that these were not her first drinks of the evening. It was just that people kept handing her things, and what was she supposed to do, turn them down? Not drink everything she'd been given? No, obviously not. Either of those things would be a sign of weakness, and Verona didn't have any of those!

"Pick, I've got cider! I'm not sure when I got this second one, but I'm pretty sure I haven't drunk any of it yet! D'you want it?"

Regardless of his answer, she set one of the tankards down in the grass next to him, taking advantage of her newly freed hand to give him that head pat she'd attempted earlier. Then she straightened, rocking back and forth on the balls of her feet as she watched the end of the bout. She watched the Alvar grin as she escorted her defeated opponent out of the ring, and noticed several of her classmates looking at the girl in curiosity - maybe even admiration.

You wish you were that cool.

Abruptly, Verona set her half-drunk tankard down on the grass next to the other one, and declared,

"I think I could do that. Yeah, I'm gonna go do that. Be right back!"

With that, Verona marched over to where Maya was holding court and waved to catch her attention.

"Hey, Maya, can I try a round or two?"

Zyan Zyat

Zyan used pretty much every time he had to himself to do what he did best. And that was train, train, train! He trained his body, trained his magic, trained any and all aspects of himself. And after all the...fuckery that had happened back in the fight with the Water Jelly, he realized that he was severely lacking in several capacities. Namely his breath, and his transformation magic.

One was...notably more easy to train than the other.

On the one hand, after several uses of it and training his throat, he could now comfortably (comfortably being a "gentle" way of saying he could use it without shredding his throat apart) use his fire breath a fair amount of times before it became too much for him! His lightning though...was going to take additional time to work it. He could use it more than once though so...progress?

But he was truly proud of where his transformation magic had taken him. While he was more unable to transform OTHER things with said magic, he was still capable of using it on HIMSELF. It was kind of like Body Magic but...more? Either way, after several hours training (sometimes into the night, into the morning), he'd managed to train himself to switch aspects of him on the spot! He could change the compound of his fists, his feet, change them mid swing, he was honestly impressing himself.

But wooden dummies seldom were ever impressed with the growth of their opponents. He needed actual people to try it on. and evidently, this fighting pit was just what he needed!

Thankfully Zyan realized he didn't like the taste of cider so he was of clear mind and clear thought as he approached Maya, holding up a hand.

"I'd like to try a round or two as well, Miss Maya." He said, turning to Verona and grinning with a little smile.

Shard

Shard had spent the past few days doing what normal, non-fugitive adventurers-in-training did. Namely, practice!

By which we mean "try to hold himself back from blowing up the building".

It was both successful and unsuccessful; successful in that he hadn't blown up the building, unsuccessful in that his spells were still packing a bit too much firepower for him to be comfortable. No way he was going to have a repeat of the jelly incident.

He hadn't experimented much with other affinities. If Fire made a solar flare, he did not want to see what the other ones made, especially anywhere near civilization. As such, Shard had mostly just been trying to get pure Rift under control.

But now wasn't the time to worry about that. Now was the time to hang out with friends! Shard eagerly woven through the crowd, looking for any faces he might recognize (especially Elliot).

Lac’ner

The last few days had been business as usual, working in the infirmary part of the day before joining his fellow students for classes.

Lac took to magic like a fish to water, showing great promise with his wind magic (dorky names aside), and had recently been making thoughts on something he called “Mix Magic”, taking one type of energy and combining it with Wind to become more effective.

A few students once asked where he got fire energy from. He meekly answered, “just a torch”. When they pointed out there were no torches, he just made himself scarce.

The other field of interest was Life Magic, naturally, which came in handy for treating the various students that came through. This, too, seemed to come naturally.

…though on some nights, there were whispers of a white haired boy with bandaged limbs supposedly swinging a sword out behind the dorms.

Thus do we come to tonight, which sees our hooded lad, though he’s opted for a simpler shoulder hood as opposed to his usual full cloak, sitting on the sidelines of the fighting pit, finishing up healing the beaten Bogovi.

“That should do it…if you f-find anything else w-wrong, d-don’t hesitate to come back, alright?”

With that he returns to his seated position, apple in hand, and a notepad on his knee.

Leave it to Lac’ner to be studying at a party.

Not that the musicians couldn't grab Sieglinde's attention, but she had a natural weirdo-sense that was now tingling massively. Giving a cheerful wave towards the band, she soon sprang up and ran to where the others seemed to be congregating. The... fighting ring.

Great. All my friends are thugs.

“What'cha reading?” she inquired of Lac as she plopped down next to him, deeming him the most interesting by him being the seemingly least interested in what everyone else is doing. “Oh, yeah. Hi~! Forgot that part~”

She waved at him, eyes closed and smile wide without a care in the world. Despite only being about a foot away from him, making waving entirely pointless. But it was the thought that counted. Probably.

Elliot.

For Elliot, it had certainly been an eventful and yet uneventful first week so far, he'd certainly picked up a few mundane things, like how to set up a tent and campfire! Not to mention...well, okay, combat class wasn't as amazing but progress was still being made! Not necessarily much in terms of getting stronger or skill but a bit faster.

Conversely, his attempts at magic, both in the classroom and trying to focus and sense it elsewhere continued to end in complete failure. There was just...nothing. The fact it just seemed to be him was somewhat discouraging.

And what free time he didn't spend reading in the library or elsewhere or was taking two more 'bounties' on the board, really minor ones no-one seemed interested in taking, with one was helping find and a missing pet and the other...was to literally ran into the person who'd found their lute on their own and removing the bounty from the board.

As for the feast...celebration, things were certainly rowdy and noisy between the brawl and music, cheering and shouting, Elliot wandered through the academy, taking in the sights and sounds, making small talk here and there...and politely excusing himself when the offer of a drink was brought up.

And the fight or rather one of the two involved got his attention. Sure, it wasn't Alec, but there was definitely a resemblance, the fiery hair and stature...it was certainly similar. A sister, maybe? Elliot simply shook his head, best to focus on other things and enjoy the party. He hadn't ran into anyone from his class just yet, but his eyes were open.

Hope you weren't expecting anything witty here. Maybe some day.

"Hi, Ell!"

Elliot wouldn't have to wait long; Shard had just seen and made a beeline towards him, a big smile on his face.

"This party's so cool! We haven't gotten to just talk in a while an' I like talking to you, so this is the perfect opportunity to talk! Or do things, 'cause there are so many things to do. Or both! Both's good."

Shard blinked, realizing he was babbling, then awkwardly cleared his throat. "So, uh...what do you want to do?"

"Look inside yourself and to the stars; there, you will find your answers."
