Oh boy, where to begin?

Well, YMMV.Axis Powers Hetalia is an absolute mess and I'd like to clean it but know next to nothing about the series. I'm sure other pages have problems as well but the YMMV page is the one that really concerned me. They're nattery, poorly organized, poorly written pages and we need to fix them.

And...ugh... the RonTheDeathEater.Axis Powers Hetalia page. It's so bad.

[up] Since there's already some dispute on how to define RTDE and its sister trope DILP, and no TRS thread's been made yet, let's start on some easy work.

Right, but that page is so full of bashing and whining about fandom perception that it wouldn't fit any definition of RTDE / DILP.

But yes, let's find an easier place to start because that page makes me want to smash my computer.

There's also an AlternativeCharacterInterpretation.Axis Powers Hetalia page which is pretty redundant.

Here's an Americans Hate Tingle entry that's of debatable keep value:

  • Americans Hate Tingle: While there are definitely Western fans who like Japan, there are also a sizable number of fans who are 'meh' about him at best and brand him as an Extreme Doormat, Flat Character, and/or even the series' Creator's Pet at worst due to his relatively stoic personality and him representing the author's homeland.
    • There are even fans who take offense to a Visible Minority of the Japanese fandom warping his character and cite this as a reason to not like him, forgetting that not only is that an absurd reason to hate the character himself (is it the character Japan's fault that his fandom likes warping his canon personality?) but that the Western fandom, or rather, American and Canadian fans do the exact same thing to America and Canada.
    • Additionally, compare the popularity of any Japan pairing in Japanese fandom to its popularity in Western fandom. Of all Japan pairings, only Greece/Japan comes anywhere close to matching its popularity in Japanese fandom (and it's mainly because its popularity in Japanese fandom is relatively modest compared to other pairings like England/Japan and America/Japan) and pairings like Turkey/Japan and Netherlands/Japan are virtually nonexistent in Western fandom in spite of having decent-sized fanbases in Japanese fandom.

And don't worry. I've seen Fridge.Sonic The Hedgehog 2006 before.

[up] Yeah, that's very nattery.

I don't like the Mexicans Love Speedy Gonzales one much, in part because half of the examples seem more like they should be under Germans Love David Hasselhoff. Not to mention the serious natter.

  • Mexicans Love Speedy Gonzales: Some fans like the character representing their nation more, because whenever he appears they can get all the culture references before they are explained (or even when they are not explained at all).
    • America is Number 2 favorite character in a poll on the American side, whereas in the Japanese poll his position can range anywhere from 4th to 9th. Americans like making fun of themselves?
    • South Italians that listen to the Buono Tomato song can immediately understand that it's a Tarantella, a south Italian dance that mimics the effects of chorea (an abnormal involuntary movement disorder). In the comics, Romano suffered from that disease when he was young...see? Everything in Hetalia has a reason!
      • Especially since South Italy is prone to earthquakes.
    • The dub uses this trope word for word when Romano calls Germany Hasselhoff as an insult.
    • Russia is also pretty popular amongst American and Japanese fans. Wonder why?

I know this thread is a couple years old now, but I'm familiar with Hetalia and am willing to assist with the cleanup efforts. There is a lot on those pages that reek of leftover residue from the 2009-2014 ish era of the fandom that can go.

With the aforementioned Americans Hate Tingle entries about Japan, I feel like only the first bullet is necessary. The rest just read like complaining about shipping (which, boy, there is a lot of that on the Hetalia pages that needs to be nuked) and how Japanese fanon apparently mangles his character, neither of which have to do with him in canon, so I think they can go. What do you think, should I chop those bullets?

I decided to start with tackling part of the Trivia page because there are some...weird and unnecessary things on there. Please give some criticism because I've never helped on cleanup before. For this part, General Trivia. I don't think that's even allowed on TVT anymore, so that's one artifact. Some examples seem like they could be kept with tropes that fit.

    Hetalia General Trivia

General Trivia

  • Hetalia: Axis Powers is a series about people who are countries. Doesn't sound too strange until you realize that the series manages to be educational and gay. The best part? The author is male. This isn't trivia, this is literally just a description of the work. Cut.
    • One of the girls who does appear is a total yaoi fangirl - she openly enjoys seeing her husband being molested by other nations. I shouldn't have to explain why this should be nuked too. WTF. Cut, cut, cut.
    • It gets better: Hetalia was serialized in a seinen magazine (Comic Birz). Yes, the series known for its almost entirely female fandom can be called a seinen. World Stars also has the distinction of running on Shonen Jump's sister site Shonen Jump+, though there's less of a gap in Periphery Demographic in most works relating to that magazine.
    • As an additional sidenote, said author was living in New York when he came up with the idea, which probably explains why it seems as though it's not quite expectedly Japanese. This is also valid and true, Himaruya got the idea while he was living in New York and researching all the ethnicities that live there. But I'm not sure what trope this can be kept with.
  • Each of the countries' quirks is based on what the country is famous for. Again, just a sentence explaining the premise. Easy cut.
    • Such as America and... Nantucket?
      • Well, there's Nantucket as his Idiot Hair. The author later started a series called Chibisan Date that takes place in Nantucket. Natter and conversation between bullets. These can also go.
  • Switzerland and Lichtenstein are depicted as brother and sister, with Switzerland being extremely protective of her. In Japanese, they are voiced by Romi Park and Rie Kugimiya, respectively, similar to the relationship between their characters in Fullmetal Alchemist (Park as Edward Elric and Kugimiya as Alphonse Elric) If this were properly troped it would be Actor Allusion, but I think this is probably a coincidence. Probably cut.
    • There's also Truth in Television, in that the two countries do view each other as "siblings" (wir sind bruder). Cute, but probably not tropeworthy. Anything this could fit under?
  • Estonia's character design was based on Himaruya's own looks. Not the hair and eye colors, though.
    • He also jokingly has called the character "the best character in the series" This is true, but he's already troped as an Author Avatar on the main page, so this is redundant. It can go.note
  • For America's Maru Kaite Chikyuu they used the "Awesome" and "Music" straight from Lady Gaga's "Just Dance". This is true, those soundbites were sampled from that song. But Sampling is one of those tropes that, due to its incredibly widespread nature, is only troped for noteworthy or played with examples. Gonna need some second opinions whether to keep.
    • In the ending song from the movie, you can also hear him yell Yes We Can! at one point. Maybe can be listed as a Shout-Out.
      • He explicitly says "Yes we can" in "WDC World Dancing", one of his character songs, too. Same as above, and these two could maybe be combined into one bullet.
  • Banned in South Korea, for various reasons. This is an actual trope, so it's misplaced to be in the "General" section, plus it's a ZCE. I can do a writeup that actually explains it, but another time, since this post is long already.
  • Romano/South Italy's character song actually uses the rhythm and tone of Tarantella Napolitana. Which makes sense given that when compared side by side, they sound exactly the same.
    • Poland's Marukaite Chikyuu incorporates elements from the Polish National Anthem.
    • In addition, it seems that Frontier Works did their work; you can sync-up both Poland and Lithuania's Marukaite Chikyuu, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein's Marukaite Chikyuu, so they sound somewhat like duets. Furthermore, within the recent World Twinkle character CDs, each character references the other character with whom they share a CD with. This is most prominent on Norway and Iceland's CD, where they call/receive a call from one another midway through their songs. These all seem legit, but I'm not sure what they could be troped under, glancing through the music tropes.

I was thinking to cut all the stuff I mentioned to cut and then comment out the stuff that doesn't seem objectionable but could be moved, is that a good procedure? Sorry if these are dumb questions, I've never participated in a cleanup effort before and want to make sure I do it right.

You don't want to hide things that aren't ZCE; instead, we can pull them all and discuss where each viable example can be moved to.

General Trivia has been cut, possibly viable stuff has been moved to Sandbox.Hetalia Cleanup.

The rest of Trivia seems pretty valid and viable except a few, which I can also move:

  • Anything That Moves: Word of God's stance on France's sexuality. This is true, but I don't know why it's trivia, it can be moved to the main page.
  • Reclusive Artist: A curious example for Wy. While she is indeed an artist and also really hard to reach that's actually because they can't build a driveway.
    • Kugelmugel also counts.
    • Ladonia's founding boss created the driftwood sculptures in his claimed land. These are In-Universe, so I think they can be moved on the main page as well.

There's also one bit on that page describing Vic Mignogna as a "fangirl magnet", which I definitely think should be changed...
