Like I said, we need a better method of declaring video-example bans beyond a few people on a thread thinking it's a good idea. That might've been one of the issues with the merge idea, at least it was for me.
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallWell...
- Instead of just having a handful of tropers make the decisions, a crowner system would be good.
- Though we already have 3 threads dedicated to the examples, a separate thread for "No Video Examples Please" declarations would be useful here. The Quality Control thread is too slow and poorly advertised to make such claims, especially since we have no way of actually enforcing anything beyond asking the mods to remove videos.
- Lastly, we need to determine better, more objective criteria for the bans beyond just "trope is gory". Banning videos for very subjective reasons seems to be leading to a slippery slope where people keep proposing we ban certain tropes simply for being a little bloody. I'm not saying we should embrace gore-trope videos, but we need a better, more objective way to decide these things.
The first tropes banned (Epileptic Flashing Lights, Potty Failure, Nocturnal Emission, Jump Scare) were done so with the agreement of Nombretomado, who then allowed for us to try and enforce the rule. After that it just became a pattern of people going "Hey, this trope shouldn't have videos" "I agree" "Alright it's banned".
I might be a little personally frustrated with this since I've had some objections and arguments completely ignored, and that shouldn't happen when it comes to things this big. I'm not saying I'm always right, but to have my points go completely unacknowledged made me realize just how much the current system doesn't work.

idea too.
Yes, please. We need more discussion on this. The first few (Sensory Abuse was one I did forget about) are keepable as we had mod approval.
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallMaybe all the tropes which don't have mod approval for no video examples could be added into a crowner for the thread.

Working on Sandbox. The Amazing Race TV Tropes Edition.Yeah, that's how No Real Life Examples, Please! already works. I could easily see that working for video examples too.
Granted, the RL thread has had issues lately with mass, unexplained downvoting, as well as the thread moving at lightning speed, so hopefully we can avoid those issues here.
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper Wall
Those things are already outside our control, so the only way we'd know if that happens with a similar thread for video examples is if the thread existed.
I guess my real concern is that if we just slap everything on a crowner, that still glosses over the discussions we need to have about them first. I just feel like a crowner with nothing else sort of misses the entire point of my protest- it wasn't that not enough people decided it but that the "discussion" was one sided and rushed at best.
But if we make an actual thread for these things we can take our time, have actual discussion, then launch a crowner once we all shared our takes.
...But yes, the whole issue of mysterious crowner votes is a concern too, just to a lesser extent. We've had issues with Crowners lately and I just wouldn't trust decisions made solely with a crowner and not much else.
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallPerhaps we just do without a crowner. Crowners are really for larger-scale decisions or when a lot of decisions need to be made in a short time. For something more minor like this one a thread discussion is all what is needed.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanDo we need a crowner to decide if we need a crowner? :p
Anyway, I'm good to just made a "No Video Examples" thread and take this discussion there. Is there anything else left to worry about otherwise?
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallNot really. I believe all tropes which ban videos for health concerns could stay under the blanket ban, along with Potty Failure.

Working on Sandbox. The Amazing Race TV Tropes Edition.
Crown Description:
This crowner is to select a draft video upload policy from available sandboxes. This crowner does not imply that No Video Examples Please will (not) be kept.

It's gone down to 7:12, so closing the Crowner.
