I don't think Serial Escalation illustrates the right concept — it is a narrative trope, not a dialogue trope. The image is closer to what Up To Eleven was originally intended to be.

Yes it is, but I think it's kind of clear enough that they are characters, so it's not that bad for this trope.

The first might work with a different arrangement of panels from the same comic. I really don't get the second though.
