I don't think it's possible for a Villain Protagonist to be a Hate Sink and still function. A narrative revolving around a Hate Sink would have a hard time retaining reader interest, in my opinion
Absolute destiny... apeachalypse? This is more of a question for Writer's Block, I think.
Current Project: Incorruptible Pure PurenessHate Sink and Villain are orthogonal things, anyway. You might be able to write an Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist who is designed to be hated by the audience, such as [insert disliked series here] but it would be difficult to write a character who is the protagonist, hated by the audience, and popular. Pick two or less.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.Gonna go ahead and move this to Writer's Block, OP.
On a more general note, I sincerely doubt that there's any type of character that everyone likes, with perhaps a handful of exceptions—if that.
My Games & WritingIt might work if you pair them with a very likeable Hero Antagonist.

What’s the point of having a protagonist you don’t want to win?
Watching them lose. Usually hilariously or cathartically. There's a reason Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist exists.
That said you should know by know the purpose of a character who's meant to be detested by the audience is supposed to be in the wrong and get some kind of comeuppance. If done well, you'll have a character everyone’s is eagerly awaiting to see fall from grace and openly celebrating when it finally happens because you've managed to connect to your audience. If done poorly, you get YIIK.

Hi. Does everyone like Villain Protagonists? Do you like those who are truly detestable? Do you like the kind of protagonist that you're not supposed to like?
