Do not confuse with a cleanup thread

Go To

Since the previous iteration of this thread got completely wiped in the crash, I'm remaking it. Also, have a relevant ATT thread.

There's a lot of unnecessary "do not confuse this with X" notes on wiki pages. As a quick example, VideoGame.Creepy Castle says "Not to be confused with the level with the same name from Donkey Kong 64." Nobody is going to confuse an action-adventure game from a few years ago with the last level of a 90's collectathon platformer, and that's not even the only game with a level named "Creepy Castle". I would delete it myself, but I've already deleted it once and I don't want to edit war over it.

If you find any misleading or Fan Myopia-filled disambiguation notes on pages, bring them up here.

Additionally, I would like to propose that "do not confuse with" notes should only be for pages with similar titles, such as Run-and-Gun vs. Do Not Run with a Gun, rather than "this series is named for a character whose name is the same as another character from an unrelated series", such as the note that used to be on Series.Benson about a character from WesternAnimation.Regular Show.

Get this out of the way now before the debate is recreated:

No, this isn't attempt to erase all the funny. It's an attempt to erase the fan-myopia filled "jokes" that keep popping up. There's a line between actual jokes and nonsense like this. We're going after the nonsense.

Thanks for recreating the thread.

As I said in the previous thread: I support the cleanup with all my heart.

I think most of these are distracting and for me, these all read as really-not-at-all-funny jokes and weird shout-outs.

Personally, I'd like to remove the cross-reference on Emma and Victorian Romance Emma. Who's gonna confuse Jane Austen and modern manga?

Thanks for remaking this thread. I was going to do it myself, but I just didn't get around to it.

I went ahead and cut the Creepy Castle example, as well as the notes on The Asylum + Asylum Visual Effects, and Emma + Victorian Romance Emma.

There was a fourth example given in the original thread, but I cannot remember what it was.

Playing Gertrude has a note about not confusing it with "a minor character named Gertrud". Nobody is going to confuse a minor character from an anime with a trope that can't apply to anime.

I just found another useless note on Curtain Call that says "Has nothing to do with a spacecraft with the same name from R-Type Final." It's gone now.

Idk I think a lot of these notes are funny and a good way to cross-reference similarly named works. I don’t see the problem.

I said it in the original thread and I'll say it again: Just going "Names The Same" and leaving it at that is not a joke. All it does it clog up the page.

You want to make a joke about Similarly Named Works? Fine, but make it an actual joke. Like the one on Dexter's Laboratory and Dexter.

This isn't a note on a work page description, but on one of the examples on Were Still Relevant Dammit.

The idea that everyone's familiar enough with PB&J Otter to confuse it with a random commercial on a totally different network sounds like some silly Fan Myopia.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

So here's one I made on House of Gold... is it keepable? I figured TOP is sufficiently popular enough to make people think of their song, "House of Gold", before this obscure, niche fanfic about two YouTubers, but...

"And of course, don't confuse this with the Twenty One Pilots song of the same name."

Creative, I know.

Is it alright to put a "not to be confused with" paragraph on Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel and Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel? The names are similar enough that someone not that familiar with Fallout might confuse the games.

Could I also add this to We ARE Struggling Together?: "This trope is not about a character sharing in the other's hardships, which You Are Not Alone covers." The trope name kind of makes it sound like something someone would say to another, which could confuse people who don't know the trope.

The only links there that are even kind of valid are The Thing That Goes Doink and Fantastic Four (as they have a pretty well known character called The Thing), but I won't object if anyone else thinks the note should be cut entirely.

[up] I could maybe, maybe see keeping Mothra listed there since that's another sci-fi movie monster that has been called "The Thing" before, but even that's a stretch. I doubt there are many people, if any, that exclusively know Mothra as "The Thing".

Everything else, though? No. No one's gonna confuse a Japanese yard decoration with one of the most iconic horror movies ever made.

If anything should be listed there, it's the other adaptation of Who Goes There?: The Thing from Another World, as well as all the spin-offs like the comic, video game, and 2011 prequel movie, but all those things are mentioned throughout the description, so it might be redundant.

Tontine says "do not confuse with a tauntaun". I'm going to remove it, as an entry in Will and Inheritance Tropes is not at all related to a space horse/kangaroo thing.

By the way, should we go through and dewick I Thought That Was, I Read That As, and I Thought It Meant? I don't think potholes to Just for Fun pages are allowed on the main wiki.

This is from The Woobie. It’s most definitely not necessary.

And for your information, it's spelled Woobie. Please don't confuse this with a Wubi, Wookie, or Woomy.

I could see the "wubi" thing maybe being valid... if it weren't such a ridiculously obscure term.
