[up] I should have clarified that I was referring to the humor of the trailer as juvenile, not Deep Space 9.

The DS9 Ferengi episodes always had a mixed reception, if you just accept the absurdity of the characters they can be funny but Quark surgically crossdressing to seduce a prominent Ferengi government official is considered one of the bigger WTF moments of the franchise.

But most Holodeck Malfunction episodes could be considered comedy episodes, from "A Fistful of Data's" to "Our Man Bashir" to "Bride of Chaotica."

My main concern with Lower Decks is that the characters are going to be subjects of ridicule, rather than the situations they are put into. I don't want it to just be a bunch of goofballs.

I want to believe people would be more or less accepting of this parody if it was called something else and not using the "Star Trek" name.

Honestly, I'm pretty sure this isn't really meant to be taken that seriously.

From what I could tell from the trailer, it just looks like a wacky sitcom/adventure comedy type thing, set in the Star Trek expanded universe, that probably won't actually have any impact on canon.

As long as they sometimes remember that, even in a comedy, the final frontier is still freaking awesome, it should be fine.

Realize too, the actual "Lower Decks" episode is beloved and renowned for being funny but extremely poignant in its depiction of the lower crewmembers and their relationship with the main cast. So the show is not just a different take on the franchise, but it's trying to ride on that specific memory as though it's a direct adaptation, which it obviously isn't.

Eh, it leaves a bit of a better impression on me than the trailer did but it still seems like it's trying to ape Final Space.

I'm sorry, but I think it's a real unfair strawmam to say that the negative reception to this so far has been just trekkies taking the franchise too seriously. Like, Star Trek has numerous fan-favorite comedy episodes, TOS is almost pure camp, Voyage Home is widely regarded as one of the best of the movies, trekkies have written stuff like "The Offical Star Trek Nitpicking Guidebook" and Galaxy Quest is regarded as better Star Trek movie than some of the actual Star Trek movies. Not to mention, one of the bigger criticisms of Discovery was that it was trying too hard to be super grimdark and serious. If the trailer or that clip were actually good with actually funny jokes, trekkies would be fine with it.

As it is, even if we pretended that it wasn't an official Star Trek series, but just one of the many parodies, it's still really bad. Everyone has made these same jokes over and over again and the characters look annoying, not endearing.

I'm willing to give it a shot, to see how it turns out. I am kind of hopeful the characters improve later on down the line, since at the moment I'm a bit concerned it'll be too much like Rick and Morty where they try to shill an unlikable asshole as the main character.

I remember when the first descriptions of TNG came out, I thought an android with the name of "Data" who wanted to be a real boy was an incredibly stupid idea.

So, who knows? We'll see.

Yesh, hope the gorns not a gonna be a common thing but other than that I'll definitely give it a few episodes. Most of my interaction with star-trek is just the movies cause the tv series always looked boring as sin to me so maybe this series is more my speed.

I'm also going to wait to judge it until it comes. You can't judge it by the trailers.

I enjoyed it well enough. Enough that I'll give it at least a couple more episodes. I can't compare to Final Space because I've only seen the name and only today, but I don't think it really leans into Rick and Morty territory.

That said, I'm not really a Trek fan, but from what I've seen (about half the movies, part of TOS and a few episodes I happened to be in the room for) I can see why it may not be something more dedicated fans would enjoy.

I said my piece in the Trek folder, but this show was awful. Not one joke landed, not one character made me want to see more of them, and the whole thing was profoundly cynical and nilhistic, but not in a funny way. Rick and Morty’s nihilistic worldview works because of the absurdity of the characters and setting, but applying that to Star Trek just feels like a rather mean spirited dig at the past works. And that’s not to say the Federation should be perfect. My favorite Trek show is Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, which views the Federation as flawed, but worth it in the end. This and Picard go in the other direction, the Federation sucks, Roddenbury was a fool, and none of this is worth it. I’m not even a hardcore Trek fan by any stretch (a casual one sure, but not hardcore), but the mean spirited nature just felt really off.

And all that would be forgivable if the show could make me laugh at least once. Not one laugh, not one smile. It was just bad.

Is it weird that I kinda want to see Beckett's insistence on flat out ignoring the rules and doing things her own way backfire on her though.

I know we all love the character who flouts the rules and gets the job done, and god knows these days authority figures do not have the level of trust they used to, but do we want to see her be unambiguously right all the time?

I'm fine with most of the time myself, depending on the situation. I do expect her tendencies and the fact that she's one incident away from being transferred to culminate in her nearly getting kicked out at the end of the season, but the others help her out.

I'm not a Star Trek fan (I've literally only seen the first couple minutes of Into Darkness and like the first episode of Discovery which I coudn't get into.) but I enjoyed this. Don't know anyone's names but I thought it was pretty funny. Will definitely see at least this first month of episodes through since I've got a free month of all access and then if the rest of this month's episodes hold up I may keep watching.

I found this episode really funny. I especially loved the new girl and the cyborg. My main problem was the two leads. I found them kind of boring. I can't wait to see more. I see a good deal of potential here.

Saying that Star Trek fans are against the show because they don't like nothing new is unfair, both Picard and Discovery were well received by fans of the franchise specially Picard in fact I saw several rankings (from IMBD and RT for example) showing an oustanding fan acceptance rating of Picard.

Secondly, saying that Star Trek fans are against the show because is comedy is also unfair, all Star Trek shows had comedic episodes wich are well regarded, some of them classics, and Star Trek spoofs like The Orville and Galaxy Quest are greatly beloved by Star Trek fans, as is Futurama which constantly pokes fun at the show.

So none of that is the reason behind the fan backlash.

Personally I consider myself a Trekker, I have watched all the shows since I'm a child, watch all the movies. I like the new soft rebooted movies too and the show Picard (I do have mix feelings about Discovery, but the second season liked me much more). Heck I even like Discovery more than Enterprise thus I have nothing against novelty.

But this first episode did not click on me. Like at all.

I havn't see Rick and Morty so I have no way to compare it. The "humor" did not go with me, nothing in it I saw funny or make me laugh. It felt like a parody episode of Family Guy to me. I don't know if R&M is like that because as I said I havn't see it.

The Attention deficit disorder-like action that I saw in which characters are always jumping around, nothing is serious, there's no drama or suspensful situations because the writers seem to think that people would be bore out of their minds and fall into a deep comatose-like dream state if characters do not do something exciting for less than half a second felt something similar to the humor in the Ducktales reboot.

With the difference that in Ducktales works because is more cartoony (and more moderate). I guess that is how cartoons are make today, like watching someone on cocaine playing charades.

Nothing in it felt Star Trek. The senior officers were shown to be pricks, more akin to Zapp Branigan than anything Trek. Criticism and deconstruction is fine but, man, this was weird and felt almost like dystopian and that is weird for a Star Trek show even with the darkest DS 9 episodes never felt like that (but I know in that particular case might be just something of the first episode that may change later).

I know they use the Star Trek name for publicty and brand recognition, but is kind of weird. Why making something using Star Trek if is not really Star Trek at all? Make something new and fresh for that matter and avoid the potential backlash. Is not like you're doing Star Trek anyway.
