I keep trying to find the Spanish version, but it doesn't show up. Do I have to have a Crunchyroll subscription?
Oh yeah, and I'm enjoying the series despite some spotty voice acting. I was surprised by how much of it is a Stretch Armstrong reunion of sorts. My favorite character so far is definitely Yaotl.
Latest blog update (November 5th, 2022).Third episode was another step up. I think we really needed a core cast of characters that wasn't just Izel and Yaotl, and it finally delivered. It's really weird hearing the characters curse, though, since the f-bombs don't come naturally. It only worked with Yaotl at the end of the first episode.
I'm curious to see if we'll see Izel and the twins' guardian again.
Latest blog update (November 5th, 2022).Well, considering the series takes place in Mexico, it's obvious the Spanish dub does it better. At least they did the dub in Mexico, and not in South America like other dubs in order to save costs.
Interesting show. All the human sacrifice and body horror could become a bit of an Audience-Alienating Premise for a wider audience, though. I don't think this would make it to TV.
The gods portion of the story is really hard to follow if you're not steeped in the mythology. Perhaps a bit more exposition in the first episode would help there.
Is the giant leopard supposed to speak without moving his mouth? It looks a little odd.
Not sure who the girl in the underground cave was or what happened there? Did she turn into that monster?

Hope shines brightest in the darkest times
Audience-Alienating Premise is baked into this show's DNA. It’s using Mesoamerican mythology, when non-European mythology seems to be a turn off in general (look at the performance of Seis Manos compared to Blood of Zeus), it’s a non-anime in an anime focused streaming service, and the Crunchyroll Originals line may be DOA thanks to FU Nimation buying the service and presumably having no interest in domestic animation.
At this point it’s probably best to appreciate the show on its own terms rather than worry about the general audience reaction, since that reaction was hobbled even before the buyout.

What was the buyout?
And I agree, this show needs to be appreciated on its own terms.
Just that sacrifice of the girl was pretty brutal for a cartoon. It's done off-camera initially, but then they show it anyway, in the intro no less.
And I agree that the story seems a little generic, and the timeline is rather fast paced it seems. How many episodes is this show supposed to last?

The premise
Created by Sofia Alexander, Onyx Equinox will be Crunchyroll’s first series to center Latinx characters with a specific focus on ancient Aztec culture and mythology. As the latest wave of otherworldly demons attacks the world, Izel gradually comes to understand that he’s been chosen to become humanity’s defender and wield a magical dagger that seems to transform when he exposes it to his blood.
