Sounds to me like a lot of curious living beings would end up in the Gateway w/o a key. What would happen to them?

There would be a lot of one-way diaspora between Earth and the other world, but the gateway is in a cave and guarded by a seven-legged crystal monster. It is only discovered by my protagonists as it is also where a serial killer kept his victims, one of which was their friend.

In my story, I was thinking about how to raise the stakes for my protagonists to get home. The previous mechanics were that the Gateways between worlds would only be open using a necklace, and one could only get home through there. The new mechanics act like an airlock; one side can be open, but not the other. If somebody enters the Gateway without a key, they would be trapped. How does this sound?
