Deranged X-Mas Figure
#1: Jun 3rd 2020 at 7:18:09 PM

It is a strange day in Strangeness Heights. Then again, it is always a strange day in Strangeness Heights. Founded years ago as a safehaven for those considered freaks or monsters, it has always been a bastion for the supernatural and paranormal. Vampires, werewolves, and demons roam the streets, standing side by side with wizards, prophethic maniacs, or the old Joe Schmoe that wanders in. Buildings and architecture come to life, whether it be via a mad sorcerer on a bender, or forces beyond comprehension. Drug dealers peddle curses and potions in run-down shops and back-alleys. Mad scientists sell body grafts and augmentations, regularly pushing the boundaries of ethical practice. Ghosts wander the night skies alongside ghouls and mad witches on broomsticks. The strange and bizarre is a fact of life, and it's the normal that is considered unordinary.

However, even a town such as this needs heroes to protect it. For occasionally, there are things that even the most unfazed residents cannot handle. Strange rifts in spacetime that swallow up anyone that gets near. Pocket dimensions found within your cupboards or the closet that lead to realms most obscene. Strange creatures coming up from the local sewers. Men in dark cloaks abducting townsfolk in the middle of the night. Even rumors of something old and ancient beyond comprehension sleeping beneath the surface. Or just the odd scuffle between a fire-breathing demon and a holier than thou angel that gets out of hand.

Whatever the reason, this town needs those willing and able to defend it from threats that the police are not equipped to handle. In turn, it also needs a place to train such heroes until they ready for the task that awaits them. Enter Strange Academy. Just as strange and bizarre as the town itself, it's well suited for the task of training young heroes who have a higher calling. Or those who could once be called 'normal', only to be thrust into strangeness. Or perhaps just those with nowhere else to go. Whatever the reason, it's a place for them to belong. And become whatever they were meant to be.

Here's hoping they survive the experience.

Hi, everyone! In case you haven't guessed, this is an Urban Fantasy RP, albeit with a twist. The gist is that you're a new student at Strange Academy, a strange school located in a strange town where the bizarre and paranormal is an everyday part of life. Monsters and otherwordly beings are everyday citizens, and fairies causing mischief or a giant hand reaching down from an otherwordly portal are just Tuesday. However, some of these beings and phenomena can still prove dangerous. As such, there are those deemed Heroes. Those with the proper training and abilities to take care of threats too dangerous for most people to deal with.

Of course, it won't be that simple. Alongside the usual weirdness and danger of everyday life in such a place, the school itself has its own secrets. As does the town. Whether they're ready or not, the students will have to deal with whatever strange threats or unnatural oddities come their away. So you had best be prepared.

As for the students, it doesn't matter where they come from or how they wound up at the academy, as long as they have some connection to the Supernatural or bizarre. Whether they have some sort of mystical talent, were cursed with some supernatural ailment, are an alien from another planet, or were just born that way, it's completely up to you. That said, they need to have some sort of special talent or ability, or else they won't have much of a reason to be there. With that out of the way...

  • Name: Soheila, the Daeva of Doorwaysnote
  • Age: 16note
  • Appearance: 6'7". Enjoys her flexibility, and so has made herself of a thin build to maximize her movement ability (not that it's in any way necessary to begin with). Hair is of the darkest black possible, blending into her own emanating aura—which in itself dims her area and forewarns her presence with a looming gloom. Eyes are only decorative; glassy and unfocused—and to enhance her tactility she regularly foregoes any footwear. Lacks body heat or any other signs of life. Usually clothes herself in simple attire comfortable and freeing to her touch—a simple baggy shirt/sweater and sweatpants are her most often seen outfit. Her halo is that of a thorned ring, and is pressed tightly into the flesh of her back.
  • Personality: Soheila is amicable if not lacking in true care, having learned to be at most open to chitchat even if it's ultimately for intellectual expansion and nothing more. Ever-changing, she adopts and discards traits with ease depending on if they serve her or not, and though she lacks any base desires or needs she has found entertainment in conversation and shadowing persons that she finds interesting. Foregoing the typical godlike demeanour and presentations of her fellows, Soheila instead passes herself off as someone everyday and unremarkable despite the clear evidence to the contrary—that and the fact she likes to personify things not living in a vague imitation of a sense of humour.note  Soheila can never hate nor succumb to any sort of psychological shortcomings or trauma, and at best her rare acts of intentional violence are out of a sense of poetic justice or (again) a vague attempt at irony or humour. Mimicking quietness and a sometimes naïve attitude, Soheila lacks true loyalty but rarely does she abandon what she's set her sights on—curiosity killed the cat after all, and she cares little regarding her own deletion in favour of even a second of stimulation. Specifically, she finds benevolence to be the most interesting part of personhood to her; more distasteful traits she's simply become bored of given both her innate nature and extensive exposure to wickedness.
  • Powers:
    • Corrosive Aura: Existence itself seems to despise Soheila, and Soheila despises it right back. Being a rejected god of “evil” status, she and her kind are forbidden from creation and thus she uncreates instead. Soheila's aura is intrinsic and permeating, manifesting as a potent darkness around her that gives her a perfect black body (in the physics sense). In an acidic manner, she can gradually delete spacetime and matter through flaring her aura into the form of a stiff, corrosive breeze—contact with solid objects literally unravels them from reality over time (the smaller/less dense they are the quicker). Since the universe is also trying to unravel her in return, it's more comparable to an autonomic immune system response than a willful ability. Her aura is also her way of perceiving the world, as daeva are purely tactile creatures and other senses are either mere mimicries or adornments to be admired. As with other daeva, Soheila's aura is able to (very roughly) imitate other abilities, however she's concentrated this aspect of herself almost exclusively on her domain of doorways, and as a result it is extremely lackluster in comparison to some of her brethren.
    • Alteration Of Housing: Soheila possesses complete mastery over her own form and thus can customize and change her body according to her will, discarding attributes and taking from others so that she may look very different one second to the next. The process is painless and is more akin to changing an outfit to her than the abomination against nature and biology it truly is, though some aspects are unchangeable—her aura of darkness always follows her, and the thorned halo pressed against her back is a constant too. Inflicted damage can be “patched over” and hidden, but she doesn't ever heal—as much as she can move flesh around and other such attributes she will eventually just drop dead/vanish.
    • Daeva Of Doorways: Soheila's adopted domain is that of arches and doorways; the physical, man-made passages and entrances instead of the metaphorical. This allows her to (only if she's unobserved during the process) transfer herself into any doorway she has local anchorage to (i.e. is within her range of aura to claim as her own) and reside within it through impossible space without actually interfering with its functionality. Other daeva tend to just “appear” in places unseen, but Soheila's ability to travel only between doorways is something she has adopted in place of plain teleportation. Though it has zero function in the wilderness, as she's found out the hard way before. That and wards/talismans can prevent her from summoning herself if she's anticipated—she cannot actually enter a household without permission either, lest she desecrate her domain. Each of Soheila's claimed doorways can be set to link back into her personal “abode”, but she cannot travel too far at once—to cover great distances she'll have to hop between doorways in bursts instead.
    • Spiritual Attunement: Soheila is able to hear mentions of her name even from impossible distances away, and when called upon she is able to answer in kind as one would when responding to a prayer (though she'll insist she's not doing that). She is capable of perceiving things unseen and is quite the mana deposit if any local mages need to refuel—though drawing such energy from her is usually inadvisable due to her innate corruption. Soheila is also able to ‘heal’ others when necessary, however these are more temporary patchwork jobs/placebo effects than actually fixing the problems properly.
  • Weakness: Fire has been gifted to humanity as a weapon against the daeva, and in the presence of flame Soheila's aura is effectively suppressed and she cannot actually pass through or into places blocked by such a blaze—even if she tries to pass through indirectly by using her domain of doorways. Atar and other holy fire is especially crippling due to its purity, and eats away at her much faster than she can ever hope to eat back. Magical attacks are more damaging than physical attacks to her, and even the universe itself seems to have an adverse reaction to her presence.note  Though superficially vanishing, injuries are permanent and gradually build up over time—though she can shuffle material around and work on making replacements she will at some point vanish entirely. Magic and medicines are completely ineffective at healing her, and once dead she is outright wiped from reality—never having “existed” even in the memories of those she has met.note  Her darkening presence is also hard to hide and she attracts unwanted attention from her presence alone, but most interestingly her primarily tactile senses can end up hiding people from her involuntarily; if one is surrounded by her aura or similar magic, she will be unable to detect them. Soheila also cannot enter an abode uninvited—though she can “cheat” this by simply staying crouched in a doorway, if rejected from a household then she cannot exit from her domain or exert her influence inside the place.
  • Backstory: Soheila began nameless sometime in the mid-17th century, and from the very beginning she exhibited a thirst for information and a curiosity regarding all things everything. Beginning with nature first of all and adjusting to sociality later, Soheila eventually chose her name on a whim after being rather irritatingly pressured to identify herself by a curious pair of identical human younglings who had stumbled across her mid-adornment.note  Since then she has gone by both this name and Sima—which was her initial pick before deciding it to be too bland and forgettable in comparison to the more extravagant Soheila—and has actively avoided her kin during her ensuing travels, out of a combination of instinctual wariness and a learned dislike for their usual tendencies. Though not yet having explored the whole of the wide world, Soheila's travels have been numerous enough for her to have attained an appreciation for human culture—adorning herself with a more humble and easygoing appearance rather than setting herself up as a god to be worshipped. With her most recent destination of intrigue being marked as Strange Academy, she has made appropriate adjustments to her form to fit in—though an unnaturally tall “teen” with as low a voice as a mature adult will undoubtedly raise more than a few eyebrows.
  • Miscellaneous:
    • A theme.
    • Soheila's aura manifests primarily in the form of a chilling, deathlike breeze—an invisible “presence” that can be felt even by those without powers. Even in its mere investigative state it still tingles against whatever it touches, despite ultimately not being harmful unless she wills it. It can also be visualized by others as a barely-perceptible blur—those who can perceive auras will see something closer to its full glory. Not that looking at it's advisable.
    • Has picked up numerous languages (though not all fluent) in her travels westward of her birthplace in Iran, including Kurdish, Arabic, Turkish, Greek, Italian, French, English and Welsh. She'd have picked up sailor slang too if it weren't for the fact she “swam”note  the Atlantic.

"In a school for the abnormal, I'm a mostly regular guy."

  • Name: Justin Henderson
  • Age: 16
  • Appearance: Justin is a rather tall - about six foot one or six foot two - young man who has a rather rough and tumble appearance. His sunwashed blond hair extends to about the start of his shoulders, and is most often tied back in a ponytail or manbun. By necessity he has a rather muscular, lean build, which he has cultivated for personal reasons. He is quite tanned, and when his shirt is off you can see a number of different scars from his rough time of it. Justin wears a sleeveless white shirt and matching sleeveless blue vest, long cargo shorts, and specialized high tech boots designed for helping him get around, having a high speed wheeled mode. His eyes are light blue, which he often covers with sunglasses. He wears high tech large gloves on his hands.
  • Personality: Justin wears his intelligence and capabilities around on his collar, always eager to show how mechanically skilled and capable he is in multiple fields. He's always been something of a young prodigy with machines and artifacts, being quite confident in his abilities with them. He's surprisingly outspoken for a nerdy guy, and if he has an opinion he'll make that known. There's a definite element of pride in his machinery, but also a distinct loneliness to him. He feels out of place and like there are two sets of rules - one for him, one for the more overtly supernatural. He tries to keep his anger away from the surface, denying it and awkwardly deflecting away. He doesn't have very many friends, and his relationship with his parents is complicated. Strictly speaking, Justin is a technician-in-training rather than a hero in training, which he is very comfortable with. When it comes to Justin's temperament, he actually has a file that says despite his demeanor, he has a remarkably unstable mood. He grew up a normal boy by and large in and amongst the various nonhuman people in the area, and he has a lot of issues about that.
  • Powers or Abilities: His one major superhuman ability is his technopathy, developed on his own, which lets him command and control machines and robots. He also seems to be prenaturally able to construct and create mechanical things.
  • Gear:
    • Shock Gauntlets: His gloves can emit a very strong electronic shock.
    • Blinkmoths: His standard little drone. The Blinkmoths are tiny constructs that can stream info back to Justin's phone.
    • Disruptor Stick: A metallic baton that disrupts the bio-energy of those it hits, usually resulting in sickened sensations, joint lock up and pain. A recent development.
  • Backstory: Justin Henderson is the son of David and Mariah Henderson, the former a cold and chilly consulting technician at the Academy known for his experiments and skill with machines (much like his son), the latter a powerful nonhuman socialite, rich and from a powerful background. However, even with that background, rather than be born a nonhuman, Justin was born wholly human, except for his later developed technopathy. Which was not even related to anything his mother is capable of. Growing up, Justin was picked on and bullied by other young people from the Strangeness Heights area. His mother is primarily focused on partying and having fun all the time while doting on Justin whenever she is around, and David is...not a man well-suited for parenthood.
  • Miscellaneous: Justin's worst bully is Abus Lonsworth, an elf who is the son of a powerful local.

  • Name: Valerie Vale

  • Age: 14

  • Appearance: Snek. About 4 meters long altogether, and usually more dressed than in the image. Though she does tend to wear Arabian-inspired clothing and jewelry to satisfy her own bizarre fashion sense.

  • Personality: Valerie is cheerful, a bit of a tomboy, and ridiculously hard to faze. Years of living in Strangeness Heights have acclimated her to the point where she'll immediately accept any odd happening, no matter how bizarre. Also a bit of a romantic, although bad enough at flirting that most people probably wouldn't notice.

  • Powers and Abilities:
    • Serpent Biology: Valerie has all the abilities of a big freaking snake. Her 3-meter tail is almost all muscle and can squeeze and constrict hard enough to crush nearly anything she can wrap it around. Her forked tongue can taste the air much more precisely than a human's sense of smell. And while she doesn't like to use it because biting people is kind of gross, her fangs inject a paralytic venom that can take a human out of commission for upwards of 3 hours. Also a strong swimmer.
    • Snake Charmer: Best described as a mix of Parseltongue and Compelling Voice, all species of serpents are compelled to follow her hissed commands. She's used this to her advantage to collect and train some exotic pets.

  • Gear: Has a large number of both exotic and domestic pet snakes that she keeps in her dorm room and on her person. Her two favorites are her king cobra, Sultan, and her rattlesnake, Billy, both of whom she keeps with her at all times.

  • Backstory: Valerie's mother is a reporter who came to Strangeness Heights for a story over ten years ago, and ended up falling in love with the charmingly bizarre town, moving her family there. While a family of humans didn't quite fit in, Valerie never let herself be bothered by it growing up, and was able to make friends who were willing to defend her from bullies. Of course, friends aren't exactly a perfect defense, and towards the end of middle school, she found herself on the receiving end of a black market curse that turned her into a half-snake creature. Unfortunately for the bully, Valerie reacted to this with complete indifference.
It would've been easy to get the curse removed, of course, but after a short adjustment period, Valerie decided she liked her new body better than her old one, especially the various abilities it gave her. Abilities that ended up being strong enough to get her scouted for Strange Academy.

  • Miscellaneous:
    • Is a lesbian, though no girl has yet managed to realize she's attempting to flirt.
    • Visits a back alley salesman every few weeks to get her curse strengthened.
    • Her tongue and fangs sometimes get in the way when speaking, causing her to hiss her "s"'s.
    • Occasionally eats rodents when nobody's around.

  • Real Name: Cain Adamson (Joining as faculty)
    • Former Superhero Name: Kaine (Why deny the edge?)
  • Age: Tired Old ManTM (~200,000 years old, give or take 100 years)
  • Appearance: Old man. He deliberately wears a silver crucifix sometimes to mock his lesser kin's weaknesses.
  • Personality: Cain can easily come across as abrasive and a little bit rude, and he doesn't deny it. He treats everything as a hassle, but that's just an act at this point. It's when he doesn't complain that one knows something is serious. Even if he cares a lot about someone, he takes special care not to reveal it. Cain can be very stubborn and confrontational sometimes. He dislikes people who try to tell him what is "good" and what is "evil," but he often ends up doing good anyways "according to his own desires." He can't stop. It's part of who he is. He's Cain, no more, no less.
    • Following his marriage, he's mellowed out and become more responsible, though he's still made some questionable decisions like giving his son a vampire cat minion and forging a set of knives for him as mere birthday presents. He has quit smoking and drinking to set a good example, and only indulges sparingly. Cain is quite a considerate and loving husband, to the astonishment of many. Cain himself gives no comment on the matter except for a mysterious smile when asked.
  • Powers:
    • PROGENITOR ALPHA: Cain carries the supernatural virus that would "later" branch into the types that made vampires and were-animals, and as such has increased strength, speed, stamina, and endurance, along with slightly increased senses from it. However, his version is the "unevolved" version, so his powers are weaker and have not developed into their stronger versions yet. Thus, Cain has none of the typical vampiric powers, but has none of the weaknesses, either. However, he is able to control vampires and were-animals by giving them commands while making eye contact with them, with only the particularly strong-willed ones being able to break out of his control. His mere presence cows the more weak-willed of his lesser kin. He loses all his enhancements if he doesn't regularly consume blood, but it's more like a necessary dietary supplement anyways. He has the requisite blood-drawing natural weapons such as fangs and sharp claws instead of fingernails for this purpose.
    • Curse of Cain: If an attack is made against Cain with killing intent behind it (specifically directed at him) and the attack connects, the damage is reflected. However, this can be easily mitigated by the attack not being a direct one (i.e. a ricochet or a bomb producing shrapnel). Armor and natural resistances also help mitigate damage. Although Cain has a vampiric healing factor that can be sped up if he drinks blood, he can still feel pain, and enough accumulated damage can indeed kill him. The easiest way to do so is to send mindless artificial being such as golems and robots after him. The curse is indicated by an ancient murderer's brand on his forehead.
  • Gear:
    • Blade Made of a Brother's Bones: This is an eight-inch tactical knife, but the blade is noticably made of human bone. This knife can bypass the natural immunities of supernatural beings (even divine ones) in addition to being extremely sharp. This would be incredibly powerful if not for the fact that it's a dinky little knife, not even a sword or anything like that. Cain has to get real up close and personal in battle to use it. He's managed to somewhat counter this weakness by getting very good at knife-fighting in his long life. He can recall this knife back into his hand with but a thought whenever he throws it, and it always returns without fail in a flash of red light.
  • Backstory: Cain is the titular Cain from the Biblical stories, except he did not willingly kill his brother Abel. He was infected by a strange virus from an unknown source (Cain believes that his Grandfather deliberately did this in order to teach humanity a lesson about murder because it "would have happened anyways" and somebody needed to be turned into the villain of a cautionary tale in order to be the one to continuously test humanity's morals and determination by spreading the dual "curses" of vampirism and were-animalism; if Cain didn't become the first murderer, Abel would have in self-defense), and went mad with blood-thirst under its effects. He willingly accepted his punishment and Mark in order to atone for his apparent misdeed. The story was eventually changed to its current edition because of a conspiracy engineered by vampires to hide their existence. He has hunted his kin through the ages—those that have been sadistic or given to excess, anyways—and previously decided to go on a bit of a sabbatical by joining the Saint Foundation.
    • While at the Saint Foundation, he and Marah fell for each other, though they had a bit of a rough start. Eventually, after an appropriate period of courtship had passed, they decided to settle down with each other and have a child. Their union was a bit scandalous, because of the age difference between them, but they eventually managed to stop most of the loose tongues from wagging. He and Marah are in a healthy relationship, to the general consternation and shock of just about everyone. Cain just smiles mysteriously when anyone asks how he wooed Marah.
  • Miscellaneous: N/A

  • Name: Huxshathra "Hux" Ahriman-Adamson
  • Age: 14
  • Appearance: Heir to the Firstborn Son. His fashion sense is heavily influenced by his father, and his eyes are dark brown, though under bright light they seem to turn a dark crimson in color.
  • Personality: Cheerful and easygoing, Hux doesn't let the world get him down, even if many people think of him as a happy-go-lucky idiot because of it. He's polite to everyone, and his childish charm and smile ensure that he's viewed favorably by nearly all who meet him. He occasionally displays flashes of wisdom and insight, but he will often brush it off as something he learned from his parents. Hux generally tends to respect authorities, but if they don't respect him first, then he can be an absolute rascal.
  • Powers & Abilities:
    • PROGENITOR BETA: Due to his father's genes, Hux has increased strength, speed, stamina, endurance, and senses, though of course he isn't as strong as a "true" vampire (despite possessing rudimentary fangs and claws). He also has a healing factor, but it is not as strong as his father's due to his young age. However, just like his father, he isn't affected by the traditional vampiric weaknesses. He has also inherited the ability to command other vampires and were-beasts, which (due to his hang-ups with using it) is only somewhat difficult to resist. He mostly uses it to command his vampire cat, Mr. Tibbs. Cain has also taught him some basic martial arts and knife-fighting skills so he isn't completely dependent on his beloved minion.
    • Warding Glyphs: Hux's mother insisted that he get tattoos to ward off evil, and so he did, though he doesn't have tattoos that cover his whole body. Instead, his warding tattoos are mostly inscribed on his back, along his spine. They passively prevent him from being possessed by most common "nasty things" and actively burn evil things that dare to touch him when he activates them.
  • Gear:
    • Mr. Tibbs: Mr. Tibbs appears to be a white Persian Longhair at first, though his staring crimson eyes and numerous fangs (more than one would expect to see in a cat) soon put a damper on that "fact." He enjoys using his newly obtained intelligence to prank and startle people. Indeed, this vampiric thrall answers only to Hux and his father (who "created" him as a birthday gift) though he still enjoys being petted and praised by other people. Mr. Tibbs can transform into a lean and idealized shape with sharper fangs and claws for battle which is the size of a cougar when his young master is threatened. Though he is vampiric in nature, he possesses no innate healing factor, and therefore he needs to assimilate additional biomass in order to heal himself quickly. He also shares a telepathic bond with Hux, though he can speak normally in a faintly arrogant English accent.
    • Vampire Daggers: A set of 10 supernaturally sharp daggers forged from blessed metal, made by Hux's father as another birthday gift. They gleam menacingly even when there is little light around. Hux can control them telepathically and make them move towards enemies on their own, and the wounds they cause bleed more than usual, requiring more effort to staunch. Truly, a "terrible" gift by an "irresponsible" father.
  • Backstory: Born to one Cain Adamson and one Marah Ahriman, Hux is a truly fortunate child because both his parents love him very, very much. They have done their best to take care of him and provide for him since the moment of his birth. Marah is especially protective of him because of her own childhood experiences, and Cain often uses his prior parenting experience (which Marah claims to be outdated) to teach him life lessons. Hux has experienced bullying due to the scandal caused by his parents' union, but has managed to deal with it so far. Strange Academy is just the next adventure for him, and he's genuinely happy to attend.

  1. Real Name: Nestan Beth Nouhra note
  2. Age: Gives her age as 16
  3. Appearance: A dark skinned, muscular woman, both dark haired and brown eyed. She prefers semi-formal clothing that differs little day to day. In uniform, she wears warded armor that recalls medieval heraldry. She wears a flaming bird on her front as a sort of heraldry.
  4. Personality: Nestan does not like to cause trouble and is unnerved by attention, but she certainly perceives herself to be on a mission and seeks out trouble. She is an aspiring champion of Springwells and Living Saint of Nasu and constantly seeks to prove the fact. Her easygoing, submissive nature is both 'real' and a dormant state, and she is capable of anything with a goal in mind. She has alot of wrath below her deliberately stable exterior. Yet, Nestan's aspiration towards heroism is real nonetheless. The lay sister simply has a desire to do good by her community and the people she cherishes. They did it for her after all.
  5. Powers and Abilities: Thaumaturgy: Nestan Beth Nouhra is a thaumaturge of Druj Nasu with an incredible innate psychic potential and skill in close quarters combat. Accordingly, she can draw on powers of faith and channel minor miracles even while engaging in a melee. She’s not her deity’s avatar by any means but one potential champion among many. However, her innate psychic sensitivity gives her a leg up. Her talents most often manifest as:
    • Beacon of Corruption: First manifested as a psychic sensitivity that doesn't turn off. She's used to catching glimpses of and hearing the whispers of other, unnatural things as well as spirits and echoes of the departed. It makes her an excellent medium and capable of interacting with souls and the incorporeal in general. It also makes her haunted. She’s most practiced with: ‘Spell List’
    • Memento Mori: By her patron's mockery of reality, Nestan's blows defy time and space and bypass damage reduction and barriers; including shields, intangibility, wards against weapons, and raised arms... provided her target is in reach.
    • Blessed Taint: Nestan can absorb and selectively release diseases and afflictions (including supernatural ones), but does not suffer their effects. Similarly she can far longer than a normal person before starving or dying of thirst, and she can eventually fully recover from injuries that do not kill her outright. Nonetheless, Nestan detects as human to wards and senses, albeit human with an intense spiritual 'weight'. note
  6. Gear: Nestan keeps a pair of swords on her, an estoc for actual combat and a machete that’s more of a tool. In the field, she dons a warded armor and a shield that are highly impact- resistant. Resistant not proof. Sustained gunfire or magic bolts will get through them. She also carries around a satchel with oil, medical supplies, and maintenance supplies.
  7. Backstory: If you ask her, Nestan came to Strange Academy because of a vision she received to help the people there. She's been hearing things and sensitive to things beyond sight for as long as she can remember. Though it estranged her from her parents when they found out, Nestan had been working with the Springwells Chancery, of Shirin’s sect, since she was 11. Even before working with Shirin and being trained by the Chancery, she spent her earlier years listening and conversing with unseen things and squatting in abandoned housing while working with her parents' extralegal housing and building charity. She’s more familiar with ancient conspiracies, preternatural things, and plain deception than she lets on. Why, one of her main reasons for going in full nun uniform is to get past doormen.
  8. Miscellaneous Skills:
    • Direction Sense: Nestan has extensive knowledge of geography and cartography and a keen sense of direction. She is quick to find her way around and retrace her steps if need be.
    • Medical Knowledge: Nestan is proficient in first aid and field care.
    • Ritualist: If given time and materials can invoke or help others invoke powers that she doesn’t specifically practice everyday.
    • XO Talents: Inherited from working with the Almonry, Nestan can help organize the setting up of an aid station and (in an extreme pinch) a rudimentary unit. She has 0 experience actually giving the orders in either case though.
    • Research and Development: While naturally more at home around research involving psychic abilities and spiritual powers, medicine, and military matters, Nestan has a talent for research and creating projects based on what she’s found.

  • Name: Alexander Nichols

  • Age (14-16): 16

  • Appearance: A young man of average height with shaggy dark hair. Generally always looks tired, his brown eyes perpetually sagging. Lanky and thin, Alex is not a particularly athletic sort, though he’s not out of shape either. He habitually wears gloves and long sleeves, to cover the tattoos on his hands and arms, which depict various alchemic symbols.

  • Personality: Alex is polite but not particularly respectful. While he won’t snap or get angry with people, he will not hesitate to point out their flaws. He’s not a people person, and has trouble understanding why people aren’t like him. Very studious, Alex places a lot of emphasis on intellect and reasoning, and has little patience for people who make obvious mistakes. At his heart, however, Alex is heavily utilitarian, wanting the best for the most people, and dislikes violence when it isn’t absolutely necessary.

  • Powers or Abilities:
    • Inorganic Transmutation: By making physical contact (clothes don’t inhibit this ability) with any kind of nonliving matter, Alex can reshape it to his whim. This includes changing its physical shape, expanding or condensing it, or even transforming it into a different material entirely. This power draws on his body’s internal energy supply, so excessive use tires him. However, he can ‘recharge’ himself by absorbing energy - such as heat or electricity - from objects.

    • Weaknesses: Alex is restricted by conservation of mass, so he can’t, for example, turn a cup of water into a gallon. The difficulty of a transmutation is also proportional to how radical the change is. Reshaping something is simple, changing the material a bit harder. Turning lead to gold is easy, as both are metals with similar composition, but turning lead into hydrogen would be significantly harder. Physically, Alex is a normal human, with all the weaknesses that implies.

  • Gear: In battle, Alex trades his gloves for a pair of elbow-length metal gauntlets, which he transforms into weapons or shields as needed.

  • Backstory: Alexander is the son of a scientist, a researcher specializing in the study of metahumans. His father, Edward, had moved to Strangeness Heights for his research, and wound up falling in love with a woman who was supposedly a witch. Edward did not expect his son to inherit any powers from his mother, but was surprised to find that Alex could break down and reshape matter at a fundamental level. The power manifested on Alex’s seventh birthday. Alex chalks this up to coincidence, though he suspects this may also be a psychosomatic trigger. Edward’s current theory, which Alex concurs with, is that his mother’s ‘magical’ powers manifested differently due to Alex’s more rigorously scientific mindset.
    • Alex’s tenure at Strange Academy was a natural next step, as seeing the variety of powers displayed by his classmates would give him vital data points about his own.
  • Miscellaneous: Does not believe in magic, spirits, or gods. Instead, he believes that such things are simply operating on physical rules that are not yet scientifically understood; 'sufficiently advanced aliens', in other words.

Name: Fala Pine

Age: 15 Earth Years

Appearance: 5'6, muscular and broad in figure. Rough, segmented skin with retractable spines, translucent yellow eyes, green leaves to serve as hair in the appearance of a spiky ponytail. Has a preference towards punk fashion.

Personality: Tough and hostile (one might even say....acidic?) upon first meeting, but once a person gets to know her better, Fala can be really sweet.

Powers or Abilities:

  • Super-Tough Skin: Capable of withstanding a barrage of bullets without slowing down, has retractable spines to aid in hand-to-hand combat.
  • Healing Factor: Fala can heal herself about an hour after being wounded.
  • Acid Spit: Can spew acid up to 20 feet in front of her with an equivalent corrosivity to concentrated hydrochloric acid.

Gear:

  • Hydroflask: Always keeps it on hand to aid with her healing factor and to replenish her acid supply. Absolutely covered in stickers.

Backstory: Fala is a Nananite, one of many races native to a planet inhabited by plant-based people. She was sent to Earth when she was an infant to escape the ravages of war against the Karpouzians and ended up landing in Strangeness Heights, where she was found by the Pine family and raised as one of their own. Even though her new parents raised her as best as they could, she still always felt like the odd one out when compared to her human siblings. This certainly wasn't helped by her classmates in grade school, who teased her so much that she started putting up a front of toughness, both physical and emotional. Concerned about her emotional wellbeing, Mr. and Dr. Pine enrolled Fala into Strange Academy in hopes that she would make some new friends and find a way to use her abilities for good.

Miscellaneous:

  • Although all the inhabitants of Fala's homeworld are technically intersex, they mainly have features that would read as feminine by Earth standards, thus Fala was raised as a girl.

  • Name: Hali Everett
  • Age (14-16):15
  • Appearance: A blue-eyed dancing girl.
  • Personality: A kind-hearted, energetic and optimistic girl, who may be a bit naive and scatterbrained, but is pretty empathetic. Even if she can be a bit of a dummy, her passion and willingness to help others is impossible to deny, even if she runs and talks a lot faster than her mind can keep up with. Even so, she has her moments of insight and tries to solve things peacefully.
  • Powers or Abilities: ‘’Mastery over water and ice’’ Due to her heritage, Hali’s able to control water, change its state from water to ice to steam, even if the handling of the latter is spotty beyond the state change. Given how she was trained, her way of controlling it resembles martial arts, or a dance. She has developed a fair few techniques to supplement her own physical ability. Her body is also somewhat colder than average and can stand it pretty well.
  • Backstory: Born from the marriage of Lily Aquatos and Samuel Everett, two former heroes, becoming a self-defense instructor/dance teacher and a musician respectively, moving a few times. A fair amount of her childhood involved training to control her powers and to learn some responsibility, even if she preferred making friends and dancing, but managed to keep a good relationship with the introverted family. Now, in Strangeness Heights, she looks for her own story, her own future.

  • Name: Micah Bridges
  • Age (14-16): 16
  • Appearance: "Father claims smiling settles people enough to ignore the blips in my voice." and "Target recognized. Initiating Combat Procedures."
  • Personality: Micah currently has very little in terms of emotion, which he needs to "access" in his files to know how to react to a certain situation, yet will maintain his stoic disposition. However, that being said, one thing he HAS picked up from his father is his hamminess and his love for science. By which I mean he takes the aspects of his "mother" and "father" and names his attacks and makes them as showy as possible (this is likely the result of Mason watching a LOOOOOOT of anime during his construction). However, Mason has hinted at an event called a "Singularity" that is just, at the moment, a working theory, but if it works well, Micah may gain his own true sentience...and whether that's good or bad is up for HIM to decide.
  • Powers or Abilities: Being a hyper intensive robot construct created by a world class genius, Micah is capable of several feats, mainly being his increased endurance, speed and strength. IN addition to that, however, Mason also fit his son with several different weapons in his "pocket space", which involves a lot of unfolding limbs to acquire the likes of stun guns, swords, stun swords, and the likes. With his main power source being a portion of Tyulla, he hardly ever runs out of steam and is capable of creating destructive beams of energy and force fields like his mother before him. His skin is a strange synthetic compound meant to simulate actual skin but is capable of rapid fire healing.
  • Gear: With a Swiss-Army sort of set up, Micah has his weapons currently stored in his body and is able of accessing them at a moments notice. Such items include stun guns, stun swords, regular swords, Beam Cannons, Elemental Plane Amplification Technology (A small generator in his chest allows for the use of the Elemental Planes for small bursts and adjustments), along with a few other things like Clothes, "food", and music.
  • Backstory: Micah is the Acronym for Mason Bridges next leading cause of technological advancement, M.I.C.A.H. (What the Acronym currently MEANS is well up to whatever Mason finds appropriate at the moment). After hanging up the Alpha Revelations Driver and putting aside Hero Work to focus on being a teacher at his school, he decided that his next bit of progress will be creating his own son! Mostly due to the fact that chemically and genetically he sincerely doubted he and Tyulla could even MAKE another creature and the idea of making something that was capable of ending worlds at the drop of a hat didn't fit too well. So, compromising, he worked on Micah, using a bit of Tyulla as a power source and after years and years of complexity, he was created! With the hope of him developing his own personality through shared experiences and relationships, Micah was sent to Strange Academy to work the progress along and to be a hero like his father before him.
  • Miscellaneous: As a great honor, Micah has all of Mason's previous musical library installed in his system, as a way of "Getting in touch with his emotions, being, and for cool fight scene music." He doesn't see the point.

Name: Gremory Hawkshaw

Age: 15

Appearance: Built like a cross-country athlete, as his powers keep him fit. He dresses pretty plainly, generally favoring loose clothing. Keeps his reddish hair cut very short. He looks like he should be a mass of scars. Hard gray eyes and very white, very sharp teeth.

Personality: Gremory is a son of a very large and old family in town, if not very rich. This has left him with a sense of his own superiority vs other kids and especially humans, as well as a huge sense of responsibility to make his town better. The weirder or more inhuman you seem, the more he’ll like you. While the meaner parts of his attitude have softened somewhat over time, his savage side and impulses can make him brusque and cynical, often voting for the most direct and bloody answer to a problem. This isn't seen as bullying-just keeping his territory safe. Contriwise, he doesn’t think much of outright sadism for no reason. If he’s going to hurt or intimidate you, there’s a reason for it and there’s no reason to waste energy on pointless violence-he also prefers to use intimidation (such as simply staring at someone in the same way a tiger might, and with the same effect) before using his powers. His loyalty can be as hard as iron once gained, but if you betray that or move against his family.....

Powers or Abilities:

Shapeshifting: Gremory can turn all or part of his body into that of animals. So he could grow wings, become a flock of crows, or just a large crow. Also able to form various animal combinations. This change is quite bloody-for example if he wanted the talons of a hawk, they would tear out of his legs, and the flesh would fall off to dissolve on the ground. Going back to human feet, his toes would push through and the claws would be shucked off like socks. Turning into, say, a swarm of rats would cause his skin to deflate like a gory balloon as a tide of rodents came out. He doesn’t often like to change to groups, as it can be confusing to process the information. He also has a heightened resistance to pain and injury as well as sharper senses (which can be overwhelmed if he’s surprised, though this will also piss him off). Hates Hunters, of course-both kinds.

Skills: He’s learned to survive outside and fight reasonably well without his powers. Enjoys photography, too.

Gear: None. He likes to use what his powers give him. (We’ll assume he has stashes of clothes around town.

Backstory: In Strangeness Heights, there is a high, lonely place called Redwake Hill. The site of the town’s graveyard, it was also a popular makeout spot both because it offered seclusion and from a rumor that a child conceived on the hill would be given great power. More than a few town leaders and influential people have claimed to be Redwake babies over the years for added credit, and perhaps it was true. Gremory Hawkshaw, however, was not only created there but born there as well.

Gremory was closely watched as he got older for evidence that the legend was true. His aunt, the feared matriarch and former 7-term mayor Polly Yon, was constantly setting up small tests or surprises to see if his gift had emerged. It all came to an end on his 13th birthday, when he impatiently shifted into the form of a wolf to take down a wounded deer who was threatening to run away with an arrow in its side. When he returned, there was much celebrating! It only increased as the full extent of his gifts were revealed. From then on he was both pampered as the newest leader of the clan and tested to ensure his powers were at their peak. Going to a school just seemed like the most natural step in his training, and a healthy infusion of Hawkshaw cash ensured he would be accepted and known as someone to watch.

  • Name: Rajani
  • Age (14-16): 14, chronologically.
  • Appearance: A little one, nary 4'9". That isn't ink spattered across their clothes, but the rusted brown of dry blood. Those who stray close enough to Rajani may detect an unpleasant odor, like that of rotting meat.
  • Personality: Happy-go-lucky, childish, and eternally cheerful, or so they seem at first glance. Should the situation call for it, Raj is capable of showing a sense of maturity and intelligence that is beyond their assumed years, and heavily juxtaposed to their natural way of being. On top of that, should one be around Raj for long enough, they may be left with the impression that their positivity is born not from kindness or optimism, but instead a deep-set apathy for any given situation and the consequences that may arise from it.
  • Powers or Abilities:
    • Shadow Weaver: As a being of pure shadow, Rajani is able to contour their form as they see fit. They can become as flat as paper to slip under doors, or as tall as a lamppost to reach difficult places; they can morph their hands to have sharp claws, or into a block as blunt as a hammer. They cannot naturally exceed the amount of shadow they already are in possession of, though they can absorb a nearby shadow to give them more to work with- however, they can only absorb one shadow at a time, and it will naturally return to its home six hours after being taken. Their malleable form also makes them more resistant to physical attack- a strike with an iron bar will not break any ribs, though it will still leave them winded.
    • Shadow Mind: Speaking of resistances, Raj's mindscape is an... odd place for those with mental prowess. While those with enough experience, or exposure to Raj's mind, will be able to navigate the mindscape like it was any other, newcomers may find themselves overwhelmed by the seemingly infinite, silent darkness where thoughts and feelings should be.
    • Shadow Sustenance: Raj requires no food, drink, or sleep to survive, though it is technically possible for them to consume the first two. Rather, they only became fatigued when exposed to bright light, with extended exposure leading to unconsciousness and, in the worst case scenario, death dissipation of their being.
    • Shadow Breath: Born within death's chilly grip, Raj has some control over the immediate temperature in their area (expanding ten feet from Raj's body at the most). Specifically, they can lower the temperature to the degree that water will freeze over. The process is gradual enough that using such power for ill, such as to cause hypothermia or frostbite, is largely impractical, though theoretically possible if the target is unconscious or bound. Raj uses it more often for ice cubes.
  • Gear:
    • Their clothes. Raj has only one set of them, and though the bullet hole covered in rusted blood may be distressing, it's unfortunately not something they can do anything about; Raj's outfit will contour and change with them, and they've yet to find a way to dispose of the clothes for nicer wear.
    • A parasol, usually, to help deal with those pesky sunrays in the morning.
    • Little else. As they require little to survive, and can change their form at a moment's notice, Raj isn't one to keep things on them. At the most they may be found with physical cash, those little air fresheners you get for cars, and/or errant bus tickets.
  • Backstory: Good question! The being that now calls themself Rajani awoke one night in an abandoned alley a few towns over from where Strange Academy is situated- no memory, no name, nothing to tell them how they got there besides the ragged bullet hole in their shirt. Was their shadowy form a result of their touch with death, or had they always been that way? Only their killer knows- and their family, presuming they have one.
Taking on a new name, Raj spent the next fourteen years drifting between towns, lacking a reason to live but also lacking reason to give up their second life. They've made some attempts at discovering more about themself, but none of their attempts have born fruit, and they hold no more interest in the endeavour than they would any other passing hobby. What interested them more was the talk of a town that was rife with such oddities like Raj, which is how they came across Strange Academy. With a long-lost memory of school life whispering at their senses, Raj enrolled.
  • Miscellaneous:
    • Marked with the scent of death, Raj inspires fear in most animals that they come into contact with.
    • Goes by they/them.

  • Name: Emilia Shade
  • Age: 16 (at time of death)
  • Appearance: Does not own a pet snake.
  • Personality: Emilia moves and speaks with a lethargic (lack of) energy, acting as though she can leisurely take her time no matter what circumstances may be and trailing out the ends of her sentences like her voice is about to fade out. However, in spite of what her mannerisms may make her seem, Emilia can be surprisingly diligent when given a task to set her mind to, and she can be quite friendly to those she gets to know. Perhaps a bit too friendly - she has a soft spot for teasing and flirting with the people she knows, and enjoys playing pranks on others, seeing it as a bit of harmless fun.
  • Powers/Abilities: Emilia is a ghost, with the litany of abilities that state of undeath comes with. Emilia is intangible to most objects, being able to float and phase through walls and solid matter without disturbing so much as a single speck of dust, as well as becoming invisible or silent to everyone except those she wants to see and hear her - save those with abilities such as supernatural sight or similar senses.
    • Using the abilities of a poltergeist, Emilia can move objects within the physical world to a certain degree, though lacking the singleminded intensity of other spirits, this is usually limited to that which she'd be able to interact with normally were she still alive. She is capable of moving larger or more numerous objects with concerted effort, but the concentration required to do is enough that Emilia would leave herself open.
    • Emilia can possess objects both large and small, manipulating them as easily as her own limbs - from the intricacies of opening a complex lock to driving a car. Bigger than a car though and her "self" will either spread too thin or be concentrated at a particular spot. While doing this, she also cannot use the telekinesis of her poltergeist ability, or become intangible or invisible. While she can technically "possess" another living being, Emilia lacks the capacity to control them or hear their thoughts unless they willingly let her do so - however she does share their sensory information.
    • To a limited degree, Emilia can shapeshift - she can change the appearance of her clothing or make herself appear younger or older than her normal time-of-death self, but is limited to that.note
  • Weaknesses: As a ghost, Emilia is vulnerable to all manner of magic and ritual concerning the undead - necromancy, shamanism, spiritualism, holy magic, etc., and because she lacks a tether to the mortal world such as a totem or a grudge, Emilia is always at risk of crossing over into the afterlife.
  • Gear: Hard to have when you're intangible...
  • Backstory: In life, Emilia was just an unremarkable girl with a normal family in a normal city neighboring close to Strangeness Heights. However, that life was cut short - how or why, she didn't know, Emilia's last living memories just attending high school as is standard for a girl her age. Truth be told, Emilia remembers that life like one looks through a fogged up window on a rainy day - hazily, droplets of clarity still distorting the full image before trailing off the pane. Her memories after death, ironically, are more clear - memories of calling out to her family unheard and of the day her parents held a funeral, giving up on finding her body.
    • Emilia felt... oddly detached from her own death - no real anger or despair at its happening, just a sort of dazed acceptance. What really worried her was that her parents never really seemed to move on. She considered trying to make her presence known to them, showing a sign of sorts that she was still around, but Emilia decided it was better not to - it would only confirm to them that she was dead, and still without a reason as to why. Instead, she drifted away from her hometown - wanting to discover the truth but not knowing where to even start. Eventually Emilia found her way into Strangeness Heights and its Strange Academy - a place for a new start and, perhaps, a place to learn how to give her family the closure they needed.

  • Name: Goes by “Tenko”
  • Age: 16 est.
  • Appearance: Due to the nature of Tenko and his powers, his appearance tends to fluctuate frequently. His preferred form is that of a large humanoid golem about 9 feet tall in stature, with no definable facial features, as well larger, more pronounced arms. He also has a tendency to give his body joints, allowing him to move around easier. This form can be composed of rock, metal, drywall, or any other non living material Tenko is likely to come in contact with. Regardless of what form he takes, he almost always sports a specialized mask over his “face” which allows him to speak, hear, and see as normal. His mask is metal, resembling a flat gas mask in shape. It has two glowing blue eyes, several microphone holes on its side and a speaker for a mouth, which lights up whenever he speaks, as well as a large smile graffitied over it. On the occasions he doesn’t take a form, his presence can be distinguished by a yellowish glowing effect in the air where he is.
  • Personality: Contrary to his rough appearance, Tenko is a very cheerful and optimistic boy, appearing very friendly, if not slightly childish. He is quick to make friends with others and has a tendency to be a bit blunt on occasion. In addition to this, Tenko also has a very competitive side, greatly enjoying fighting, and even regular games, although he has a hard time playing them. He is also very excited to become a hero having shown a desire to become one since he understood what a hero was. Lastly, he is a very caring person, growing distressed whenever somebody else becomes similarly upset, especially those he deems his friends
  • Powers: In his true form, Tenko is a completely invisible and intangible entity. However, he has the unique power to occupy and absorb, any form of unliving matter, and in turn control it. He can move and manipulate rocks and brick, as well as control any technology he occupies. Through this power, Tenko has the ability to create a body for himself, from any material near him. This power can only be triggered by touch, and as such he must come in contact with any material he wishes to occupy. Though he can feel through the objects he absorbs, he cannot hear or see, and can only do so through the special mask that he occupies at all times, which he controls with his power. This power is not without flaws, however. Occupying materials takes energy, and he can only do it so much before tiring himself out. In addition, the more matter Tenko absorbs, the thinner he spreads himself, limiting how much he can occupy. In terms of solid and liquid matter, he can only absorb about 10 square feet, though when occupying gasses this range doubles. This allows him to pick up other materials from farther away.
  • Gear: The only piece of gear Tenko uses on a regular basis is his mask, which allows him to see, hear, and speak as normal. Despite usually only sporting his mask, Tenko can easily absorb other simple devices, such as flashlights, radios, or even firearms, and integrate them into his body.
  • Backstory: Though Tenko doesn’t quite remember the first few years of his life, he was first found roaming around Strangeness Heights completely blind, where he was found by a human scientist known as Sprocket. Feeling a slight bit of pity for the blind brute, she fashioned Tenko’s mask for him, allowing him to truly perceive his surroundings for the first time. Over the years, Sprocket practically raised Tenko, and the two developed a strong friendship, which Sprocket becoming Tenko’s main inspiration for becoming a hero. Eventually, Tenko moved away from his caretaker, in favor of attending Strange Academy, but the scientist and the golem still stay in touch, even to this day,

Not only because of all the heroes out there, but because his Father overthrew an entire band of space pirates utilizing his own training to produce an army of drones and a warship to fight off every Pirate ship. Seth went to Strange Academy to augment his own skills he's gained living in his father's household, and on trips to space to see his father's new ship, the Sunrunner. Seth wishes to at least measure up if not surpass his own father in many fields, though teenage hormones interfere in numerous ways and have left him a little cynical about that goal.
  • Miscellaneous: He desires his own ship one day and claims he has his licence so it should be fine, his dad is rather understandably not letting him drive any.
