Aaron

"Or we could all attack at once I guess." Aaron said, rolling his eyes as he too charged. He circled around, scooping up one of the practice weapons littered around the place - a wooden spear - before coming up behind Scathach.

However the warrior-woman tried to respond to Moirin's attack and Jirou's force bolt, Aaron would respond by thrusting the spear at her at the most opportune moment of weakness his battle instincts could find.

The spear may have been wood, but had Aaron made the same thrust at a normal human, it almost certainly would have been lethal.

Wait. We're going now?!

Juliana stared in shock as Jirou and Moírín both charged at Scáthach, with Aaron circling behind her to stab her in the back. She was not prepared for this! Oh, gods, what did she do? What could she do?!

This would be a really good time for more of my divine heritage to reveal itself so I can stand a gods-be-damned chance!

What happened next was...odd.

She felt...lighter. Like gravity had suddenly been lessened. She lifted a foot, and...nope, gravity was the same.

Slowly, not entirely sure of what she was doing, she walked behind Scáthach. Unless anyone, including the teacher, focused on her really hard, they couldn't tell she was there. She stood behind the teacher for a moment, watching Aaron impale her with the spear.

Then she drew her dagger, ran up to Scáthach, and stabbed her between the shoulder blades.

...what did I just do?!

Katarina

Katarina couldn't help but cover her face in embarrassment. She was all onboard for beating the holy hell out of the Full Metal Bitch, but they needed some sort of plan. Some modicum of strategy.

Instead, everyone was bumrushing her like neandrathals. Even Aaron was charging in like Leeroy Jenkins.

Though she supposed it made him all the more dashing.

Still, there was nothing else for it. She rushed in on all fours, low enough so that the bitch couldn't hit her so easily. She threw some sand in her eyes leaping before leaping past her, swiping at her ankle. With any luck, she'd be hobbling for the next week.

Small pleasures.

Fortress

It seemed like the students had finished their plans and decided to engage in the ever prudent strategy of charging in and outweighing an enemy through numbers. It wasn't a bad plan all things considered, there was only one of her and four limbs that she could attack with. Without so much as a shield simply overwhelming her was as good a plan as could be asked for.

Jirou's bolt of force was a good opening move, as it meant she would be forced to either take the hit or lose her strong positioning and more rooted stance. "Well done, trying to throw off my balance at a range is an excellent opening move, especially if its acting as a distraction for another move." Scáthach's praise was genuine, yet despite that she took the blow of force head on without seeming to budge. "We'll work on improving that until it can throw me off my feet."

A straightforward charge played into Móirín's strength, but her body language screamed what her actions where. Still given the sheer speed that she could output along with that killer instinct it wasn't exactly bad. Still she wasn't quite willing to give up her position to the students quite yet. She quickly dragged her foot across the ground, drawing a run on the ground that glowed for a moment before a pillar of sand exploded up from the ground directly in the path of Móirín's charge. "Good hustle picking up on Jirou's opening, that being said if you are opening into a charge you need to throw your enemy off. Roar at them, shout insults, do whatever you can to throw them off of their game." She dropped down and helpfully kicked out the girl's legs, letting momentum carry her forward.

Her instincts suddenly screamed at her that someone was attacking from behind, and given her crouched position she wasn't exactly in a great place to counter or block anything that was coming toward her. So instead she pulled off a move that would have taken the gold at a gymnastics event, pushing off her feet and using her hands to springboard into a perfect flip on top of Aaron's spear. "Attacking from behind while I am distracted, given your strength that is the perfect move in this situation. With a bit more coordination that might have been devastating." one foot lashed out behind her and struck Aaron in the chest.

However what came next wasn't exactly an easy solution to deal with, her instincts were honed to the extreme but certain abilities existed beyond her ability to simply detect. That being said the moment she felt the point of a dagger begin to dig into her skin her body moved on pure instinct, pushing herself forward and kicking behind her to break the stance of the person going for the stab. Juliana would find her arm grabbed by Scáthach and thrown like a pile sack of potatoes a few feet away. "Good stealth, but a cut would have been more effective then a stab, gives less time to react and a greater area to actually hit the enemy."

As loathe as she was to admit it the hidden dagger had broken her focus, and Katarina's sand struck all about her face and forced her to close her eyes less lose her vision for longer. There was no chance of counter attacking, so instead she decided to go on a full defensive, leaping into the air and corkscrewing her body to land a few feet away from her previous position, eyes shut to prevent any sand from getting in. "Excellent, you used the combination of the others pulling my focus to force me into a position from which I would either have to flee or take damage to hold ground. For someone new to fighting you're instincts are good. We'll work on honing them along with that dirty fighting style of yours."

She took a breath and cracked her neck, eyes still closed. "If anyone else has some aggression to get out come forward, I'm already writing up your training schedules in my head and more time is better."

"Yeah..." Móirín spat out out dirt through clenched teeth and turned her literally dirty glare on Scáthach. She'd tumbled pretty far from the energy she meant to hit the coach with. "But stabs are deeper." She pulled her sword off her back. If daggers were allowed... "You're not scared are you?" Notably, she did not unsheathe the thing.
No way. Millennia old old master of the art. Fine. Trained the Hound of Ulster. Check. Yet, Móirín was not going to let herself be easy to lay out. What did one do against opponents with more experience and who were all that? No idea. But she'd keep whacking until she figured something out.
Keeping her good eye trained on the coach, Móirín sprinted forward, repeating her move from before plus sword. Or seeming to. She skid just out of arm's reach of Scáthach, spraying up as much sand as possible and followed it up by circling and kicking up more sand. Repeatedly.
One: she did pay attention to Kat's—of all people's—sorta successful approach. Two: The coach had to give Móirín some of her attention, while she circled. Three: She took the coach's advice and the moment one of the others took advantage of Móirín holding her attention, she was going to go low and sweep Scáthach's legs. Coach either had to commit a limb to block or jump and be a sitting duck in the air then.

Well shit. Jirou's jaw clenched slightly as he saw Scáthach take his bolt head on without flinching and promptly dispatched everyone else who charged her. He privately agreed that he needed work on magic- it was one of his weaker abilities compared to melee prowess. Still, it didn't mean that he would back down after one simple attempt. He and the class had to prove themselves after all.

The moment Móirín tried to sweep Scáthach's legs, Jirou charged even closer to the occupied instructor, gripping his bat tightly in one hand while charging a spell in his other. If she chose to jump and dodge his classmate's attack, he'd fire another force bolt into her while she was in the air and charge into her, tackling her back onto the ground. If she chose to block the leg sweep instead, Jirou would fire an orb of light in her face to disorient her and follow it up with a swing of his bat.

Robin

At the back of the group, Robin watched silently as they took a deep gulp. Fighting really wasn't their strong point, and here on the first day they'd already been made to fend off a horde of skeletons and now to take on an instructor.

Really, there's a point where it's just too much...

Still, this was a test, and they would have to get over their hesitation for fighting at some point it seemed if they wanted to continue going to this school. Robin braced themself, opting to go for a less direct approach. Drawing Laevateinn, they started circling around the instructor while the others were drawing her attention, shaking like crazy and knuckles white as their hands clamped down on the staff like a vice.

Please don't notice me, please don't notice me...

Their form flickered in and out of view as their eyes clenched shut, blindly strafing till they stopped more or less behind Scathach. The invisibility vanished as they opened one eye, peeking at Scathach, before pointing the end of Laevateinn at her. Their spirit flexed, and a bolt of wounding magic blasted forth from the magical wand. It was far from lethal, but it would still sting like a bitch. At least, Robin hoped so. They'd never actually used the thing after the first time.

Katarina

With Moirin following her lead and the others already continuing their frontal assault, Katarina tried a different tact. She zipped over to the rocks and started hacking away, quickly cutting them into several sharp stones the size of her fists. She picked them up and tossed them at the teacher's temple, her considerable strength and sharp eyes allowing her to hurl them with deadly accuracy.

By the Gods was she getting good at this.

Owww...

Juli shakily stood up, brushing the sand off her body. She picked up her dagger and stumbled over to Scáthach. Her might-as-well-be invisibility was flickering, but it hadn't failed. Yet.

She took one last swing at the teacher, aiming to cut somewhere, anywhere, before she fell to the side, her powers finally cutting out.

Aaron

Scathach kicked him in the chest, sending him skidding back through the sand, though he remained on his feet.

As the others charged in again, Aaron, still holding his spear, cocked his arm back in preparation. Timing his throw, he cast the spear at Scathach at the same time Katarina threw her rocks.

The spear rocketed through the air, enough force behind it to rend metal. It was aimed at Scathach's center of mass, to make it as hard as possible to dodge.

There was but a moments pause before the next attack, and the students would all be able to hear an audible sigh of disappointment from the teacher. "And you were all doing so well." the lesson had apparently flown over their heads, through demigods were always well known for looking only at the trees in front of them and missing the fact those trees made up the mouths of a giant demon. Regardless there was still work to be done.

Móirín's sand kicks splashed over Scáthach, who remained remarkably still considering the fact that a good portion of said and was being sprayed into her face. Jirou's sudden charge combined with Móirín's sweep for the leg was a perfect combination, falling in time with one another without a wasted word. And despite not having a full apptitude for magic the light bomb was a great added touch. But it had been centuries since she needed her eyes to fight, and her leg and hand both flashed out to catch the bat and leg attempting to throw off her position.

She pulled Jirou in close, rearing back her head and bringing it forward in a textbook headbutt right under his horns, her leg pressing back against Móirín's in a battle of strength that only lasted a few moments, pushing her away before planting a foot on her chest. "Now then, how can I apply the lesson while breaking the least?"

Before her ruminations could bear fruit a bolt of wounding magic from Robin struck her right in the back, a rush of pain filling her body. If she hadn't been distracted by the others dodging such a blow would have been simple, or even just dispelling it. She would be impressed if she weren't utterly furious. The rocks flying at her from Katarina were dodged with ease, weaving through the assault to approach the area the attacks were coming from, even with her eyes shut she could hear the world around her just fine.

Juliana's desperate attack didn't have much technique to it, and without the aid of her magic Scáthach heard her coming a mile away, grabbing the girl's wrist and putting a harsh grip on it, plucking the spear Aaron had thrown out of the air. "Lesson over, everyone take a breath or sit down." She released Juliana's wrist before rubbing her eyes and looking over the ground.

"You all are exceptional for your ages, Ulster's youth core might have managed to last a little longer had you been there to charge toward that whore's army," her words were filled with praise despite the fight they had just been through. "However, you missed the chance to prove me wrong to gain an iota of glory from your attack. An enemy you can't beat has been distracted, such as when you managed to blind me. If you had stopped the assault then all of you could have escaped without incident, instead..."

Scáthach put out her hand and summoned a stark white spear covered in barbs and hooks to her hand, an evil intent coming off of it. "I would realize that you were all a threat, and I would kill each of you in a breath." she plunged the spear into the ground and looked at all of them. "As your teacher this is my first lesson to all of you, if you can't win then you should run. No mission, no glory, nothing is worth any of your lives. I don't care what Hades, or any other teacher in the school says, if you run then you can fight another day, come back stronger. If any of you die for a stupid reason then I will drag your asses out of the afterlife and personally show you the meaning of hell."

The rest of the class was spent on learning how to properly stretch and running exercises along with ample breaks for water and suggestions from their teacher on how they could work to improve what they had shown. Despite her threats there were no punishments to be had, and eventually a door was open for them to return to the dorms. "No homework today, you'll be working with me for the next few days outside of your normal studies until I feel you are ready to take time away for other classes. Dismissed."

Their dorm was filled with food waiting for them after a long days worth of work, and plenty of time left in the day to talk about their experiences or just relax.

Retreat if things get too out of hand. Sounds more like common sense than a tip... She then recalled what little she knew of mythology. Yeah, I can think of a few people who probably needed to hear that.

When class was over, she was the first one in the dorms. Letting out a long sigh, she collapsed onto the nearby couch. Jeez, this class didn't agree with me...

"So," she said, grabbing a bottled water and twisting the lid off, "that was...a class." She took a long drink from the bottle. "Wonder what the others will be like."

Jirou's vision exploded into a swirl of sparks and lights as the dark blur that was Scáthach's head rammed into his skull like a freight train, sending him reeling back before falling to a knee, muttering a stream of foul curses under his breath as pain pulsed insistently right under his horns. "Fuckin' skull's denser than bedrock...Shit!" he hissed as he shook away the cobwebs and caught the life lesson Scáthach was trying to impart to the class. "Ugh...I'll be sure to keep that in mind. Assuming you don't knock it clean out of my brain next time."

The rest of the class wasn't so bad for Jirou, and his mood soon perked back up learning how to improve his magic bolts and strikes. By the time Scáthach dismissed them, he could feel how empty his magic reserves were, and had ditched his hoodie due to the sweat he had worke dup. The refreshments waiting for the class was a welcome respite, and Jirou wasted no time grabbing a can of cold peach tea and chugging it. "Yeah, it certainly set the tone." He added onto Juliana's remark. "Though Scáthach did bring up a good point. We could have been a little smarter about the assault in hindsight..."

Katarina

Well, that had been a pain in the ass. Aside from nothing they did having been worth a damn, supposedly the real answer was to run with their tails tucked between their legs. Which wasn't a bad one, actually.

She just wished the teacher hadn't been such a bitch before teaching it.

Still, the rest of the day wasn't so bad. Apparently she had a knack for fighting dirty, so their dear teacher had further instructed her in all sorts of backhanded assaults and underhanded tactics. Kneeing men in the groin, clawing their eyes out, even sliding under them and jumping on their backs to slit their throats.

Despite the damage to her sense of morality, it was actually somewhat exhilarating.

Back in their dorms, she swiped a hunk of chicken off the table and tore into it. Her dress had gotten a bit tattered, but that didn't matter nearly as much as filling her stomach.

"If you ask me, we should have tied her up with that morningstar from the weapons rack before breaking her ankles. And then I could have scaled the tower and sent her tumbling into the ocean."

She kept tearing into their chicken, only noticing the sheer callousness of her words after the fact.

"I mean, she could probably survive that. She is a God. As well as a royal bitch. She could probably climb back up with one hand tied behind her back and kick our posteriors in ten seconds flat."

Although she wouldn't mind at all if she stayed in the drink.

She wasn't sure who or what she was becoming. But if there was any part of her that cared, it was too damned tired to give a fuck.

Damn was this chicken good.

Shea... had done nothing. Hadn't fought with the others, hadn't even made their presence known. They'd just slipped into the background, as if dormant. But they'd been watching. Thinking. They'd gone completely silent even as they trudged back to the dorms with the others.

Their golden eyes were narrowed and contemplative. They made a point to retrieve their favourite cat from their room as the others feasted. They merely grabbed a small handful of something and munched away at it. They didn't feel that hungry.

Their tail curled around their waist, before suddenly sharpening into a deadly jagged spear at the tip. It fell limp again shortly thereafter, returning to its initial state—and after scratching behind their cat's ears they finally made their voice known again.

“...The bone. It were evil, but... like the one I have... could've taken her if... the sand... need more...”

They sounded... distant. Like they were mumbling thoughts aloud rather than actually talking to anyone. It was a step forward from before, at least. It was less a blank daze and more a state of unshakeable contemplation.

“...to run away... do that all the time...”

Aaron

The rest of the day proved uneventful. But Aaron couldn't help but dwell on Scathach's advice. Something about it didn't sit well with him, but it was only when they'd returned to the dorms and sat down for dinner that he realized what.

As he set a plate of meat on the ground for Havoc, giving his new buddy a scratch behind the ears, he frowned at Jirou's words. "Maybe we coulda been smarter about it. But she was wrong about one thing."

Aaron looked down at his hand, imagining the weight of a spear. "She told us that we should have run away. But..." He clenched his fist. "We're here because we're training to protect people. And if we're protecting people, we can't run away. We have to stay and fight, no matter how hopeless it seems. That's what heroes do."

Suddenly he seemed to realize what he was saying, and smiled sheepishly. "Well, that's my two cents at least. Also, Kat's right. She was a bitch. There's a difference between being a hardass instructor and threatening to set your trainees on fire."

She then sat up straight. "Also, did you guys see me during that fight?" (They didn't, but she had no way of knowing that.) "I almost had her. If I hadn't tried to stab, I could've actually injured her." She grinned. "Pretty awesome if I do say so myself. Which I do."

Jirou cocked his head to the side slightly when the topic briefly shifted to their instructor Scáthach. It seemed that quite a few of his classmates were less than pleased with her attitude. "Well, she did threaten first-degree burns, but I assumed it was part of her whole drill Sargent deal." He confessed, "Isn't that their whole point? To beat us along the path to improvement and make us wish they suffered in the deepest pits of the underworld?"

"It's a fairly common training regime to prepare fighters for moving barefoot in the wilds." Jirou told Juliana and Katarina when they mentioned the hot sand, "The hot rough surface helps toughen the soles. Do it long enough and you could stand on red coals without flinching."

Academy

The next few days would probably pass as a blur to the students, between normal classes (taught by exceptional if still very human) teachers that seemed to be at the top of their game regardless of the various quirks of the students. The workload was to be expected of a top tier Academy but still kept more free form, a basic understand was required but so long as a student could show that it seemed the teachers were happy. On days when they weren't faced with normal school life they trained with Scáthach, who pushed them to the edge of their durability but seemed to have relaxed.

After some of the students had informed Aphrodite of their first day she had given the combat teacher an earful, through she had only managed to drag out a promise not to 'intentionally' harm any students through the course of her lessons. The next time they met in class their homeroom teacher looked visibly deflated out of sheer terror but gave a shaky thumbs up as she sent them to their second 'special class'.

Laboratory

This time the students didn't have a teacher to lead them to the next class, instead just told to go through the door and find a seat. The new area they ended up in looked like it had been pulled straight from an old scifi movie, with odd bubbling chemicals and sparks of electricity dancing between machines with seemingly no function. Through there were a number of posters expressing the importance of lab safety and hard work with a number of cute cartoon animals on them.

Lines of long desks stood in front of a desk that seemed to have all of the corners rounded off and a bowl of the odd fruit candies one could never find outside of Halloween season with a note telling students to take as many as they want before finding seats together.

Any discussion would be cut off by a sudden yell of pain, followed by a rather rotund man entering into the area with what appeared to be a railroad spike through on of his eyes. He was dressed like he had walked out of an old timey photo, with a button up shirt and suspenders colored in an almost offensively bright yellow and orange, a bowtie that might have been white stained by a thin stream of blood coming from the wound. "Ah, I thought I might have been running a bit late, pardon me," despite the obvious wound the man seemed to show no reaction to it, looking about the class with his one good eye.

"My name is Professor West, and through I might not have a doctorate please know that when it comes to the bodies of both human and inhuman there is no better person in the world. Under me I hope to instill a good sense of how to care fo..." he paused for a moment went looking over the class. "I have the feeling there is something distracting the class, is my shirt inside out again?"

Lab class

Jirou had been eyeing a nearby bottle labelled "Ethanol" with some interest as he waited in his seat before he heard the cry of pain followed by the sound of footsteps. Looking up to see what was going on, whatever concern he had quickly morphed into bewilderment as he stared at the professor dressed in a rather loud outfit and not at all caring about the impaled spike in his head that was still bleeding significantly onto his shirt.

"You...ah, have something stuck in your head...here." Jirou managed a reply, gesturing at the spike's point of entry. "Is this man a Zombie or Phantom? He doesn't seem to be decaying or particularly vengeful...but humans don't just forget about fresh wounds like that..."

Safety posters? In a room like this? That's... Well, safety didn't seem to be this school's top priority, so it honestly checked out.

Juliana ignored the candy bowl as she took her seat—don't eat or drink in a lab, that's something you learn in elementary school—and waited for the teacher—

Oh, sweet merciful mother of the gods, his eye.

"Er...sir?" she squeaked out, trying not to look at it. "Your...your eye...it's got a...a thing in it..." She looked away, praying to every god that ever existed, and even a few that didn't, that she wouldn't puke.
