Okay. Shea it is. Juliana got into her best approximation of a combat stance...and then Jirou called out to both of them, asking if they wanted to join him and Morín in a spar.

"Uh, give me a sec," she said to him, and then she turned to Shea. "You in?"

Shea

“Mm. Why not?” Shea shrugged, glancing at Jirou before adjusting their footing and beckoning him over. The heat was starting to build up against their feet, but the thickened pads made it more pleasant than anything. “If you can be handling a clueless idiot like me...”

Despite their wording there was a small smile on their face, and they all but bounced back into their loose stance readily. They seemed happy, at least. Though that predatory glint in their eyes was still present. It seemed more instinctive than purposeful, though.

"We'll get there." One wink later and Móirín was reminiscing alongside Jirou. "Never got into a bar of all things, but some of my people were good at making shivs."
"But my idea... just what I said: a handicap match. Jirou, Juli, Shea against moi. No conditions. We just trade punches." She mimicked a tap dance on the sand. "And enjoy the sand beneath our feet."

Aaron

"I said you were beautiful, Kat." He was still smiling. "Because you are. And don't let anyone tell you otherwise. If they do, well, I wasn't kidding about the beating 'em up part."

Aaron shifted Katarina slightly in his arms. With the way she was looking at him, she suddenly seemed so small.

Katarina

Beautiful.

She was beautiful.

She would have questioned him. Mocked him. Because surely she must have been mocking her. Except... she already had. Back when he said she was pretty.

She was pretty and she was beautiful.

Even before becoming a walking petting zoo, no-one had told her she was beautiful.

Maybe he wasn't so bad.

In fact, he wasn't bad at all. On all fronts.

And maybe it was time she stopped denying it.

"Hey, Aaron. You doing anything tonight?"

Rebecca

Well. This was... unpleasant. For one, she knew her feet were going to reek after being hotboxed in her shoes like this, and that was gross. Also hot feet were unpleasant in general, and Miss Scathath was definitely enjoying their suffering too much.

Rebecca kept to herself at the beginning of the exercise. Before she got to punching people, she wanted to test that dirt-construct thing she'd pulled off yesterday. A spear was already pretty advanced, so it couldn't be that hard. Right?

Turned out it was a lot harder to do it consciously than unconsciously, but she eventually managed to craft herself gloves of hardened grime. Hopefully they'd give her untrained punches some oomph. And stop her from hurting her fists.

It looked like most of the class was beginning to congregate. And those who weren't were busy... umm... carrying each other for some reason. She walked over to the big group.

"You guys have room for one more?"

"Huh?" Juli looked at Rebecca and shrugged. "Sure, why not."

She then looked back at the group. "So...who wants to go first?" Honestly, she had no idea how sparring worked. Did you just...do it? Did you tell your opponent you were going first? Did you take turns? This was already so much more complicated than the skeleton fight, which was...

Honestly rather sad.

Or funny.

Or both.

Jirou shrugged and stepped closer as he raised his fists. "Well, since we're able to talk it out, I suggest we flank her on all sides. Keeps her occupied while also not losing track of the other three. I'd hate to accidentally miss and slug someone else." He suggested to the less-experienced combatants. Regardless of whether they joined him or not, Jirou would throw out a hook at Móirín's chest, under her guard.

Oh. Okay. Everyone on Morín. Got it. Juliana dashed behind Morín and threw out a clumsy punch to her left side, stumbling as she did so. She promptly made an attempt at an uppercut with her other hand, regaining some balance in the process, and quickly backed away to avoid any retaliation.

The Sands of Joy

Snickering, Móirín did not give them the chance. She knew well that she had a blind side. since he kept her eyes covered up but that's beside the point. She didn't sit still for them to start and took off running, barely swerving away from Jirou's punch. That dude hit hard. She didn't know about Juli but running (briefly) worked as well for her as him.
She moved to circle and keep them on her good eye's side. "You must admit that slugging each other would be funny!" She very suddenly darted at Juli. She was the newest arrival. Had to make her feel welcome after all! "But I'll do it." And Móirín followed up her promise with an uppercut aimed straight at Juli's gut.

Fortress

It was unusual for a first year class to not try to get to the rocks, not even a single student seemed to even consider putting their own good before the rest of the class. Through some had offered their own strength to assist their fellow students, which was always an impressive sight to see. The twenty minutes passed in no time, letting the students brawl or talk on the heated sand before all at once the heat disappeared, leaving the sand beneath their feet at an even temperature as their teacher took to her feet, looking out across the students.

"I was really looking forward to seeing one of you break, but I guess not everything can go my way," she summoned a water bottle into her hand and savored the taste, emptying the bottle before tossing it on one of the rocks. The moment the plastic touched the rock it melted into a shriveled pile of goo that slid down the surface. "The good of the group comes before anything else, trying to prioritize yourself will simply end one way only." they seemed to grasp that just fine, but there was always a risk of the lesson being lost for the sadism.

"But things won't always be so convenient," she glanced over to Katarina and Aaron. "Go ahead and let her down, I have a lesson to give. So long as you don't fail the rest of today will be practical lessons. If you fail I'll have you go ahead and clean every inch of my fortress until there isn't a single grain of sand clung against my rocks," the smile on her face spoke volumes as to how much she would love to see that.

With a tap of her foot more rocks speared themselves out of the dirt near the students, with her walking over and putting her own foot atop one to show it wasn't a trick. "There will be times where there isn't an easy answer. The mission turned into an ambush, the enemies are countless and fighting is the stupidest option possible. So what do you do?" Scáthach smirked. "Will one of you stay behind and try to hold off the tide? Will the group elect one person to be safe while sacrificing themselves?"

She looked over the students for a moment before continuing. "If one student gets on the rock they will be safe, but the rest of the class will share the heat equally, sapping you of your strength. Or one student can stay on the sands, and they will suffer first degree burns across their bodies and be expected to continue with the rest of the class today. Or you can take a third option, the stupid one."

She cracked her neck and took a stance. "You can all try and struggle against an impossible force. If you can take me down then I can't exactly force anyone to do something against their wishes, now can I?"

The Sands of Testing Something

"Duh, I got it..." Móirín waved this off. First degree burns. Pssht. "Do I still get to fight you after?"
She placed her hands on her hips, not smiling because well burns. But oi, she could do it. And she briefly looked at her classmates, pointing her head towards the rocks in a begone gesture.
The fight had ended far too soon. But on the other hand, she and her group could pick their battered hides up and fight Scáthach! And she better not take her out of class for this. She still owed Jirou a body blow or three. And Shea and Rebecca had not had enough turns either.

Aaron

He smiled at Kat. "Well, I think a certain beautiful girl agreed to go out for coffee with me."

Before Aaron could flirt more, the sands cooled down, and he turned to Scathach. He gently let Katarina down, now that the sand no longer burned. As the teacher explained her game, yet another cruel test, he scowled.

He stepped up next to Moirin, facing Scathach with a determined glare. "I don't give a damn if you burn me, but I won't let you hurt anyone else. Making people strong doesn't mean torturing them."

Aaron got into a combat stance. "Anyone who wants to fight, stand with me. Anyone who doesn't, get on the rocks. I'm taking this bitch down either way."

"Ow!" Juli gasped as the punch connected to her gut, sending her sprawling backward. "Oh, gods, that was...that was painful..." She sucked in a breath.

Then, Scáthach cooled down the sand and announced that they had a choice: either stay on the sand, go to the rocks, or—

"Fight you?" Juli grinned at hearing that. "Oh, hell yeah." She walked up next to Moírín and Aaron. "We've got a score to settle, Teach. Hope you're ready."

Jirou's brows furrowed in thought as Scáthach's words sank in. If the first lesson was to prioritize the group's well-being over oneself, how does that apply here? Did that even apply here, or was this a different lesson?

Option one sacrifice one member for the safety of the rest, rendering them the weakest link in the group, and seriously hamper their progress for the rest of the day. Option Two would cause the entire group to suffer as a whole. And then there was the crazy option, where they try and take on the sadistic instructor. It was insane and highly likely that they'd end up in a world of pain...but hey, that's what they were training for in the first place. To go up against impossible odds.

"Well I think we have our answer." Jirou called out to Scáthach as he remained where he was on the sands. "After all, the stupid option at least has a chance where none of us suffer the heat. You know, good of the group and all that." The oni's hands sparked with magic and a faint pulse washed over Moírín, Aaron, Juliana and anyone else who decided to stay and fight, soothing their burns and bruises. If they were doing this, he might as well give them a little fix-up before the beatdown.

Katarina

Well, she guessed that took care of that. She was going on a date.

A date.

With a surprisingly nice guy beneath the exterior. Who also happened to be gloriously RIPPED.

Somehow, she was okay with this.

In fact, she was okay with a lot of things. Not everything, of course. She'd still prefer not being seen in public if possible. And someone dangling a little mousey in front of would get their throats slit

But somehow, being what she was? It wasn't so bad.

And with that burst of confidence, she stepped forward towards the teacher, strutting as she crikked her neck. "Uh, ahem. If I may, I think I should say what all of us are no doubt thinking. You see, I've had many different teachers over the years. Some were a bit rough around the edges. Others were sweet as could be. And others just... were. But you? You are without a doubt the single most unqualified teacher I've ever seen."

She briefly licked her paw. Must have missed a spot earlier.

Fancy that.

"A teacher is not some brute brandishing a sword to make themselves feel superior. A teacher is not a sadist and a bully who treats her students like dirt. A teacher is someone who creates an environment where the students actually wish to be teached. Or at least can tolerate it. You have done no such thing. So forgive me if I say that you are a royal cunt, and I will be absolutely ecstatic when I tear out your fucking gullet."

Wow.

She couldn't say she was ever that bold. Or crass. A day earlier and she wasn't sure if she would have done anything of the sort.

Whatever.

That was then and this was now.

And she was absolutely loving it.

Fortress

Each student stepped forward and threw their challenges directly at her face, mixed in with some rather clever insults by what had to be one of her new favorite classes. "Okay lets make the rules clear for everyone," she dropped into some quick stretches as she spoke to the class. "You can come at me with any abilities you have, as many at a time as you want. You have five minutes to convince me that you would be able to hold your own, if you fail to impress me then I'll enjoy having you work through the rest of the day giving this beautiful place the cleaning it deserves."

Finally she stood in a relaxed stance, a hand sitting on her hip as she waited to see what their first move would be. "I will only use my hands and feet to fight you, and I'll even be kind and only counter attack. After all Aphrodite would nag me endlessly if I broke an entire class. Again."

"Very well." Jirou agreed to Scáthach's terms and unholstered his bat in preparation. His eyes never left her as he began speaking to the rest of the group, trying to come up with a plan. "Good news is that we don't have to beat her to win. Bad news is that she doesn't seem to be the kind who's easily impressed." He began "Móirín. You seem to know of our teacher's than I do. Would that include information on how she fights? Everyone else, feel free to chip in if you have ideas. I'm open to suggestions. Otherwise..." Jirou paused and took a slow breath.

"The plan is such for now. Móirín, Aaron and I can act as tanks to draw her attention, while the speedier classmates focus on hit and run tactics. Strike fast if there's a chance, but try and stay out of her reach." Jirou briefly broke his stare to glance around at the class. "I'm not exactly an experienced planner, so I'd be happy for input."

Shea

“If impressing's the goal I suppose I'll give it a shot at least,” Shea sighed, the pads on their feet thickening considerably as they took point beside their classmates. They seemed to be a little lost, but there was a certain edge in their stance—like they were confident of something unspoken. “Jirou's still prime leader material. Nobody was asking, I know. Just saying it anyway.”

They offered him a brief smile before slipping back into their stance, taking a deep breath through their nostrils to calm themselves somewhat. They had an idea of what to do but not anything specific. They'd quickly noted their ability to shift, as well as the more subconscious changes they'd made. It was time to put them to practice.

“Someone else start us off, if you wouldn't mind too much. The plan's fine even as is. There's only so much we can do anyhow,” they reminded.

Attack on Scáthach

"Aw bollocks, I was hoping you were going to go 'Móirín... smash!'." She puffed in exaggerated disappointment. "Um..." She shrugged. "Scáthach teaches people fighting. She taught Cúchulainn and he broke her daughter's fingers and forced himself on her rival. She's a master of underwater fighting and pole-vaulting for assaulting fortresses and all that. Cúchulainn had to stay with her for a year to learn to fight good. Also, gave him the Gáe Bulg—spear that fills every nook and cranny of your body with barbs. He's dead though, so who knows if she has it again."
She shrugged again at the end, not really sure what good the information was. Should have just let me fight her in the burning sands and got this over with. Anyway, she had a plan, like always. See something in her way. Cut it down. Repeat for multiple enemies. Well, this one's a teacher. Cut it down lightly.

Katarina

Katarina gathered with the rest of the group in their little huddle. She may have developed a touch of cockiness, but she wasn't stupid. Or suicidal, for that matter. "There's not much else to say. If we're going to so much as scratch her, we'll have to fight dirty. Throw sand in her eyes, trip her over, cut her tendons, whatever else comes to mind. But I assume all of us already know that."

Part of her wondered is this was really the path they should go down. But the other part of quickly covered it with duct tape and threw it in a ditch.

Besides. If they did somehow do anything to her?

Then the bitch probably deserved it.

Aaron

Aaron took a deep breath, letting the feeling of Jirou's healing magic wash over him. Not that he was injured - the hot sand had only been an annoyance to him. He enjoyed even more when Katarina verbally ripped into their teacher for being the cunt she was. That fierceness only made Kat more beautiful.

He put a hand to his neck as he cracked it, tilting his head back and forth. He rolled his shoulders, one at a time, before tensing up.

"I'll go first." Aaron said. "I'm made for fighting. She thinks she's tough, but we can break her. I'll try to hold her down while you guys beat her ass. And don't worry about hitting me by mistake. I can take it."

"Mm, you may get your wish after all then, Móirín. Go wild." Jirou decided. Thank the gods she didn't choose to use her spear agains them. As for the rest of the class, they were all raring to go and give Scáthach a piece of their minds. "It seems that we've got our plans for attack...Let's not waste time then. Let's show her what we're made of." He grunted, dashing forward and firing off a bolt of force at their teacher. both to gain her attention and to signal the group to attack.

She has a plan: attack

"Móiríns first!" said Móirín huffed under her breath at Aaron before running at Scáthach head-on. Nope, it wasn't a suicide charge and she wasn't that optimistic either. If Jirou wanted to know how Scáthach fought, what better way than to watch? Besides, this was her job in the plan anyway.
She pulled her arm back as if going for a punch and leaned her shoulder forward and made to hit Scáthach head on with a tackle instead. And then knee her when the coach caught her.
