Have an idea for a new trope, but don't know for sure if it's a good idea? Did Trope Finder give you similar concepts, but not exactly what you wanted? Are you just looking for a focus to a broader idea?

You've come to the right place!

On this thread, you can share your ideas with the masses before making that TLP draft, so if there's any lingering uncertainty about the validity of your idea or you just want some help pinning down a good idea, ask away and help others out, too!

A related sandbox I need to pitch is the Trope Idea Salvage Yard. If you've an idea but can't personally work on it, you can add it to the yard and let someone else create the draft. Or you can browse it yourself if you need more draft ideas, whether or not you feel they should be mentioned here first.

Got ideas for non-trope pages you need help with? Never fear, the New Page Workshop Thread is here!

With that out of the way: Let's discuss some ideas.

^ That would mean putting it in the Trope Repair Shop, and I don't think I'm quite knowledgable on how to do a proper post on that kinda thing. There does seem to be at least some misuse, giving it to antagonist characters rather than its intended usage.

We'd just need to do a Wick Check to see how common the misuse is, make a thread, and suggest that the trope be expanded to conform to the misuse- which is one of the easiest things to do as far as TRS goes since it only requires us to rewrite a few things.

^ The problem is that it has over 3000 wicks, so I wouldn't know how to do even a 1/3rd of that in any reasonable length of time.

See How to Do a Wick Check. You don't need to even do a "third" of them. Only 50 wicks or the square root of them, whichever is higher. The square root of this is 57.

There's a page for Save Scumming, and there's a page for Pause Scumming. Can manipulating the FPS of a running game for the player's advantage put into a trope?

I'm also thinking of the complete inverse of Life Drain - instead of sucking other's life to heal oneself, one heals themself and harms some other guy in the process. I've run through Healing and Curing Tropes to find nothing like this.

I wish i could condense my picked quotes into a single website, but i guess that won't happen

[up] - FPS Manipulation... How about general Game Speed Manipulation or something?

Do you have examples of healing me = harming you?

How are those different? They're both healing oneself at the cost of someone else.

[up] - Yeah, it's a play on the concept, but it's not really "drain"-y if the healing happens before the damage has been applied.

Liquid Assets says that it can include healing yourself by transferring your wounds onto another person.

This seems to appear a few times in Anime/Manga: A variation of Unrequited Love Switcheroo, in which a character has a crush on The Hero and considers the hero's Love Interest their rival. However, shenanigans happens, and the admirer ends up falling in love with the love interest instead (or sometimes both).

Sounds similar to the All Love Is Unrequited image.

And a Type 5 Triang Relations.

[up]You mean type 6? None of the examples I'm thinking of is listed there, though:

  • Nao Sadatsuna from Food Wars! is a Stalker with a Crush for Erina Nakiri, and dislikes Erina's secretary Hisako for being so close to Erina. After Hisako defeats her for a second time during the Autumn's Elections, she becomes a Stalker with a Crush for Hisako instead.
  • In Family Complex, the beautiful Fuyuki attracts the attention of one of her male classmate, while another girl in class who likes him tries to keep them apart. When Fuyuki gets a Tomboyness Upgrade and becomes a bifauxnen, that other girl starts falling for her charms, to the guy's dismay.

I would just file that under Triang Relations. That page is meant to lump the configurations together as dynamics frequently change throughout the story.

So there's this trope I began to notice recently.

A character acts in a certain way that resembles a popular stereotype because he or she is expected to, but not in the same sense as Internalized Categorism. Instead, they are required to live up to the stereotype, or devote themselves to doing so and take it really seriously. There even may be actual guidelines and manuals to acting stereotypically that such character memorizes or lives by, such as the page image for All Women Are Prudes.

For example, there is a bureaucrat who is being unnecessarily obstructive and wasting people's time with red tape. As it turns out, the bureaucrat acts in such a stereotypical manner because the bureaucracy's rules and mandates requires its employees to act this way. Being unnecessarily obstructive and annoying peple with red tape is celebrated as one of the hallmarks of being a "true" bureaucrat for some incomprehensible reason, and finishing one's tasks early results in Produce Pelting and a demotion.

Is a "Fandom Holiday" YMMV item, for dates that are celebrated within a particular fandom (like May the Fourth for Star Wars and 4/13 for Homestuck) distinct enough from tropes like Meaningful Release Date and Significant Reference Date?

I've noticed a comedy set up where a character who has had plastic surgery or some body modification will ask someone to look at or feel up their new body, usually leading to an awkward moment. I'm wondering if a trope about this would be kosher or would it violate the lewdness policy.

Was thinking of proposing a trope about games with No Failure State, i.e. games where it is either outright impossible to die or games that do not reset your progress upon failure. I'm just wondering if it's distinct enough from Death Is a Slap on the Wrist, which is mostly about games that have an abundance of checkpoints and lives.

I personally think it is, but it's hard to describe without playing the games yourself. Like, games like Crash 4, Super Mario Odyssey, and Celeste all have unlimited lives, but you can still die / fail a challenge and have your progress reset, while games like GRIS and Prince of Persia (2008) never reset your progress upon failure, you can't even actually die. The latter is what I'm talking about.

Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy might qualify; it technically has a failure state (you die if you jump in the lake at the beginning), but it's more of an Easter Egg and is not a meaningful component of the game's challenge. Failing a jump generally just means falling down to an earlier part of the mountain.

There might be a trope when the failure state is not death. Like puzzles that need a reset button because the player can get themselves into an Unwinnable state.

Then there's games where failure is an option, like PsyCard: Lose a tournament, well, then you lost and go to the next day.

Or this from Death Is a Slap on the Wrist:

  • Curse of Enchantia takes this to an extreme - death is not even possible. Anything that would kill the player character in any other game is a mere hindrance that at worst causes Amusing Injuries that Brad instantly recovers from.

On the lives thing, there's Meaningless Lives...

Is there already a trope where someone tells someone else, who is dying, "it's okay to let go now," or "it's time" or similar? I've seen this several times recently, usually on medical shows but also in action, and I feel like it's got to be a trope already, but maybe I'm not searching for the right terms?

I wonder if Mistaken For Kidnapping has enough examples to be its own page in conjunction to other "mistaken for criminal" tropes such as Mistaken for Thief, Mistaken for Murderer and the like.
