Have an idea for a new trope, but don't know for sure if it's a good idea? Did Trope Finder give you similar concepts, but not exactly what you wanted? Are you just looking for a focus to a broader idea?
You've come to the right place!
On this thread, you can share your ideas with the masses before making that TLP draft, so if there's any lingering uncertainty about the validity of your idea or you just want some help pinning down a good idea, ask away and help others out, too!
A related sandbox I need to pitch is the Trope Idea Salvage Yard. If you've an idea but can't personally work on it, you can add it to the yard and let someone else create the draft. Or you can browse it yourself if you need more draft ideas, whether or not you feel they should be mentioned here first.
Got ideas for non-trope pages you need help with? Never fear, the New Page Workshop Thread
is here!
With that out of the way: Let's discuss some ideas.

Hey guys, this idea comes from the Bonus Boss nuances
discussion thread.
We were talking about starting a page called "Route Boss"; a boss that can only be fought if you're taking a specific route in the game.
We think the idea has some merit, but I saw there was a dedicated thread for trope ideas and figured I could ask.
SpaceBattles.com fanworks (now oficial) index in my Sandbox.Sounds like a good idea to me. Shin Megami Tensei games frequently have you fight thematically-relevant bosses on different routes, to the point where the fanbase classifies some of the games' endings based on who you fight.
Suddenly I'm... still rotating Fallen London in my mind even though I've stopped actively playing it.And in Shadow the Hedgehog, you could fight anywhere from zero to three bosses during the story depending on your choice of levels, and the story ends with one of three different final boss fights that depend on which level you're in and whether you do the hero or dark mission in that level.

It was partially Shin Megami Tensei that brought this up, but we found that's the case with a number of games.
Case and point.
So I guess that's a go?

SpaceBattles.com fanworks (now oficial) index in my Sandbox.I posted the trope I proposed a long time ago

His'nt'st'sWould Mistaken For Homophobic be its own trope or would that go under Mistaken for Racist for being in the spirit of that trope?
Thomas fans needed! Come join me in the the show's cleanup thread!Mistaken for Racist covers all forms of bigotry but I wouldn't mind the homophobic variant being split off since I think there are enough examples for it to stand on it's own.
Macron's notesMaybe the name can be expanded to "Mistaken For Bigot" in TRS if it's broader than the title suggests.
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.Do we have anything for when a character's love interest is already with someone "worse" than them? I posted a TF query about songs regarding this topic (such as "You Belong With Me"), but then I realized that it's also a very common plot- the protagonist will fall for someone but they'll already be taken, but conveniently that person's current love-interest kinda sucks and the protagonist is way better.
Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallNot necessarily. Romantic False Lead characters are characters brought in for a short time to be a temporary love interest, existing solely to help the character get with the real love interest. The scenario I'm thinking of:
- Almost always starts off with the character already dating the jerk
- The jerk is there to be an antagonist or to be an obstacle for the hero, rather than to be a romantic decoy
- The protagonist doesn't always end up with the love interest- they sometimes remain with the jerk, and the hero is just lamenting the issue
- Plus, the Romantic False Lead is just as often a Nice Guy who isn't as "cool" as the protagonist is, than they are a Jerkass.
- This character exists more to create drama and angst between the love-interests, with the one stuck in the bad relationship often complaining about it and sometimes turning to the protagonist for comfort, which is usually when the protagonist gets their chance to be with them.
It's more related to Die for Our Ship than anything IMO because fanfic writers will sometimes turn a character into an abuser to justify their love-interest getting with someone they wouldn't be with in canon.

Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallI think that's Disposable Fiancé, the boyfriend dating the heroine to stop her from getting with the hero right away. Comes in many flavors including asshat and boring.
Okay, Disposable Fiancé sounds pretty close, though I'm still wondering if there's anything for the trope where a character complains about their love-interest's romantic partner not being good enough. Is that What Does She See in Him?? It might be.

Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallYeah, I think it is. Also see Derailing Love Interests if he didn't start out as an asshole but then becomes one for drama.
IDK though. I mean...I'm wondering if my version has enough examples to qualify as a subtrope. I can think of like ten examples right off the top of my head. But if it's not different enough then, ya know, fair.
...Then again honestly it's so common that there's no real point to attempting a split I think.

Working on: Author Appeal | Sandbox | Troper WallIf the character complains about the Disposable Fiancé / Romantic False Lead (honestly I'm not quite sure about the distinction - it's that the former is meant to be wildly unbelievale, right?) being so unfit for their love interest, that sounds like a lampshading.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.I mean, I was also talking about songs like "You Belong With Me" by Taylor Swift, "Dating a Douchebag" by Roomie Official, and "Treat You Better" by Shawn Mendes, where there's no reason to believe that the singer actually gets with the love interest (barring music videos)- they're just complaining about their crush's current lover. Which is What Does She See in Him?.

The "finger guns" pose seems to be a garnish more than anything to make a character look cool. Not sure if that's too vague/meaningless to be a trope or not.
Ohhh, we do have that one.
