Have an idea for a new trope, but don't know for sure if it's a good idea? Did Trope Finder give you similar concepts, but not exactly what you wanted? Are you just looking for a focus to a broader idea?

You've come to the right place!

On this thread, you can share your ideas with the masses before making that TLP draft, so if there's any lingering uncertainty about the validity of your idea or you just want some help pinning down a good idea, ask away and help others out, too!

A related sandbox I need to pitch is the Trope Idea Salvage Yard. If you've an idea but can't personally work on it, you can add it to the yard and let someone else create the draft. Or you can browse it yourself if you need more draft ideas, whether or not you feel they should be mentioned here first.

Got ideas for non-trope pages you need help with? Never fear, the New Page Workshop Thread is here!

With that out of the way: Let's discuss some ideas.

Might Diseased Title be a trope? Because it's not just a disease, it implies that it will affect someone?

Probably:

I propose "Winter of Starvation/Starving Winter": Characters become desperate for food during the winter and may resort to doing immoral things in order to survive.

  • Warrior Cats:
    • The Clan cats always go hungry during leaf-bare (their term for winter), as prey becomes scarce, and fresh-kill has to be rationed and given to the cats most in need first. Deaths from illness or starvation during leaf-bare are common, especially for elders and young kits. RiverClan has it easier, as they can still catch fish from the river, but sometimes they don't even have that because the river may freeze over.
    • In the side story "A Dark Path Chosen," ThunderClan is enduring a hard leaf-bare, and Poppydawn, one of the Clan elders, has become ill and weak. Darkstripe and Longtail are sent out to hunt, and Longtail manages to catch a fat squirrel, but Darkstripe eats it and convinces him to have some too, reasoning that they need their strength to hunt for the Clan. By the time they get back, Poppydawn has starved to death. Longtail is horrified at what they've done, but Darkstripe shuts him up by threatening to lie to everyone that he chose to eat the squirrel and refused to let him (Darkstripe) bring it back to camp.
  • Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey: Pooh and his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood depend on Christopher Robin to bring them food. When he leaves the Hundred Acre Wood to go to college, their food supplies start to run low. Then winter comes, and everyone begins to starve. They are eventually forced to kill and eat Eeyore in order to survive, which traumatizes them so much that they make a pact to abandon their humanity and never speak again.
  • Fluffy Pony: In the winter, starving feral fluffies in urban areas may have to eat garbage to survive, often with lamentations of "Nummies nu taste pwetty...nummies nu smeww pwetty..." If they get even more desperate, they may resort to cannibalism, and parents may even eat their foals.
  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: Charlie's father loses his job screwing caps onto toothpaste bottles in the middle of winter, leaving him unable to provide for himself, his wife, his son, and the four grandparents. They have to cut down their already meager meals to a single slice of bread and half a boiled potato for each person a day. During this time, Charlie comes across a 50-pence piece in the snow and uses it to buy two Wonka candy bars. The second one turns out to have a Golden Ticket in it, making him the fifth winner of Wonka's contest.
  • The Little Match Girl: A little girl is trying to sell matches during winter in order to make money, but nobody's buying them. She is very hungry, and starts imagining happy things like a roast goose for dinner as she lights her matches to stay warm.

Do we have a trope dealing with people who just like to be cold or prefer temperatures significantly cooler than others do?

Is there any reason why Mesodiplosis, phrases sharing middles, wouldn't be a trope?

Nor Grammatical Parallelism, a.k.a phrases sharing grammatical structure, usually a list, and breaking it would be a member of the Odd Last Item Index?

Bread Eggs Squick Milk, a variation of Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick where the odd item is in the middle of the list, usually as the penultimate one with the last one being normal.

A new Omnipresent Trope: "Tail Wagging Means Happiness" (maybe "Tail Wags Equal Happiness", or "Tail Wags Equal Friendliness"). A dog wagging its tail is considered happy and friendly by default in fiction, even though real dogs use their tails to convey a wide range of emotions (anxiety, fear, warning that they may bite). Only aversions would be listed:

  • In Nichijou, Yukko and Mio run into Mai's dogs. Although they act friendly and wag their tails, they both bite the girls (one bites Yukko's hand and the other Mio's leg).
  • Cujo: The rabid Cujo continues to wag his tail in some scenes, even while attacking and mauling people. Out of recognition of this trope, the film crew constantly taped down the tails of the dogs playing Cujo with fishing wire to stop them from wagging, but it didn't always work.

Before I go to bed, throwing down my sandbox for something that definitely exists but I'm not yet 100% sure how to go about — it's the genre of web video content that has become increasingly popular in recent years of Let's Play style series that focus primarily on improvised storylines.

Digital Play (trying to play off Actual Play here but name can change)

IDK, I'm brainstorming. I just feel like there's a big hole here where these works really should be grouped somewhere but I haven't seen a name for this genre pop up yet. Despite there being plenty of articles on the phenomenon.

Is there a trope for "bad/estranged parent doesn't know that their kid's outgrown their old interests" yet? I can only think of a couple examples, e.g., in Phineas and Ferb when Dr. Doofenschmirtz decorates his teenage daughter's party as if she were still 8 years old.

You should probably ask that in Trope Finder first. Anyway, what you described sounds like Always a Child to Parent.

I think there are could be non-Always a Child to Parent uses - for example, Harley Quinn (2019) Talia shows up with baby stuff for teenage Damian because she does not care about him enough to know how old he is.

Is there something in "commercial that acts as a 'sequel' to an iconic film"? e.g. Cadillac for Edward Scissorhands, Walmart for Mean Girls.

Looking through the examples on Always a Child to Parent, I feel like the "age-inappropriate gift" idea can definitely stand on its own. There are only a couple examples that would overlap, since the focus would largely be on neglectful parents rather than overly-involved parents (which is what Always a Child to Parent is all about).

We have No Antagonist, but what about a Questionable Antagonist, where there is someone who is sorta the antagonist, but is neither that evil nor much of a plot point to the story.

Instances would be Mrs Duke in The Happiest Millionaire, the aunt in Pollyanna, the cousin in Summer Magic, and for now Arlecchino in Fontaine in Genshin Impact (althro the last could change depending on what happens when the next update arrives Tuesday night).

Nature Magic Healing, which isn't Healing Herb, this is just about the "Plant / Nature" element giving Healing Hands spells. Is that a solid concept like Heal It With Fire?

Although, this is more from Plant Person-s, since Alura Une and Mandragora are the same thing?

[up] I could see that. I feel like if it's expanded to "Nature Magic Means Healing" you'd find a lot since I feel like that's a trope I've seen around.

Thoughts on "Makeup Is Empowering" or something to that sort, as the Good Counterpart to Makeup Is Evil? It's a discussed trope I've seen mostly in crossdressing/transwoman narratives (for example Hedwig and the Angry Inchnote  and Hairspraynote ) and I imagine there's more of this ilk, along with some "girl growing up" stories where makeup means getting more mature.

I've been toying with the idea of making a "Choirs of Angels" page about the groups and ranks that angels are often portrayed as being sorted in (i.e., Seraphim, Cherubim, Ophanim... others...), since I figured that there's enough internal consistency there to have something worth talking about.

I'm still at the stage where I'm rooting around Our Angels Are Different for material and I'm not putting anything on the launch pad until I launch at least a couple of the drafts I'm handling right now, but I though it couldn't hurt to ask for some feedback early.
