Have an idea for a new trope, but don't know for sure if it's a good idea? Did Trope Finder give you similar concepts, but not exactly what you wanted? Are you just looking for a focus to a broader idea?

You've come to the right place!

On this thread, you can share your ideas with the masses before making that TLP draft, so if there's any lingering uncertainty about the validity of your idea or you just want some help pinning down a good idea, ask away and help others out, too!

A related sandbox I need to pitch is the Trope Idea Salvage Yard. If you've an idea but can't personally work on it, you can add it to the yard and let someone else create the draft. Or you can browse it yourself if you need more draft ideas, whether or not you feel they should be mentioned here first.

Got ideas for non-trope pages you need help with? Never fear, the New Page Workshop Thread is here!

With that out of the way: Let's discuss some ideas.

I may have suggested ideas on this thread before, but for once I have 3 examples that I could start a draft with but I've yet to ever do so.

Might not get to this immediately but I'm sharing for feedback.

Genius Parent, Book Dumb Child

Past TF query
Pretty much what it says on the tin; a student whose academic performance is below average is often pointed out for the fact in contrast to their parent who is known for their intelligence, often by a teacher.

Examples I can think of:

  • In Alan Alone, Alan's maid, Miss Tijah, converses with Alan's teacher, Mr Takara. Miss Tijah remarks how odd it is that Mr. Faisal, Alan's father, is a widely-known Gadgeteer Genius yet Alan is weak in maths and science. Mr. Takara replies that although Alan being weak in those subjects is true, he is proud of Alan's performance in drawing class.
  • In Ejen Ali, Ali's teacher comments that Ali's best friend Victor often scores A's while it's difficult for Ali to even get a C. Later on outside class, she tries to give him a pep talk to encourage Ali to improve, knowing he has the potential since Dr. Ghazali, his father, is a computing genius as well as an important mind hired to help accelerate the city of Cyberaya's development.
  • In the Meet the Robinsons oneshot fanfic Sorry to Disappoint You, Wilbur finds himself confessing to Lewis (from the past) that he believes his father (aka future Lewis) is disappointed in Wilbur for failing his tests, and that he finds it impossible to live up to his dad's "Father of the Future" status. Lewis promises that he is (and always will be) proud of his future son no matter what he thinks.

Looking for an hilarious comic that turned out sad through many pages (The example existed Its on Unintentionally Sympathetic) I realized we DONT have a trope for unintended sadness or drama out of humurous stuff. We have Na Rm for drama that fails to land and becomes humorous, we have Springtime for Hitler for stuff that succeeds when INTENDING to fail (God that's confusing.) Bathos for mixes of drama and comedy, same for dramedy but NOT this.

I meant more especifically that was truly intended to be hilarious but comes across as really sad instead. It is not Mood Whiplash because that is a jarring turn between the two moods and can also be intentional.

BTW, you can link single-word pages by putting double braces around them.

Big Bad-s apparently can be inanimate objects, would that be a useful split to make, since I don't remember seeing any uses of it that weren't a person?

could be an omnipresent situation, such as a comet heading towards the Earth.

Inanimate Big Bad?

I was thinking about adding a trope about visual openings like the ones we see in anime or JRP Gs and V Ns, I noticed many fanfiction writers trying to write a visual opening in some of their works or even in support of other works.

Though I honestly don’t have the experience to write the draft sadly so I hope this idea gains traction.

What do you mean Visual Opening? Like a movie that plays when you start a new game?

Would "Logical Advantage" work as a counterpart trope to Logical Weakness?

  • My Hero Academia: Mirio is at an advantage when fighting against Overhaul, because his Quirk lets him become intangible and Overhaul's Quirk requires him to touch a person to kill them.
  • JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind: Ghiaccio's White Album can produce ice and turn the surrounding temperature cold, which gives Giorno trouble fighting him because his Gold Experience's power is to create living things, so he can't produce anything that could survive such extreme cold.
  • Pokémon: Numerous examples — Water is strong against Fire because water puts out fire, Grass is strong against Water because grass absorbs water, etc.

We don't have Fandom-Specific Plot but for Real Life cultures as the "fandom", right? Because I know there's a pattern of Japanese works caring about their declining birthrate

Is there a trope that could apply to people being sexually abused on camera, whether on an organizational or individual basis?

It isn't a Snuff Film unless they die.

I've heard Snuff Film being used to describe sexual assault being filmed. If we are going to make a separate trope, I have two examples:

  • Dexter: Dexter's kill of the week in the pilot is Jamie Jaworski, a valet who likes to film himself raping women before killing them.
  • Law & Order: The episode Performance involves the discovery of a film that depicts a teenaged girl being raped. While it's initially assumed to be a Snuff Film, the detectives learn that the girl in the video is still alive. The investigation uncovers a club of jocks who have a competition to see who can have sex with the most girls, with the rapist being a member of the group.

Nothing came back in Trope Finder after a day so I'm going to ask this here too.

I've run through Flashback and found nothing. Do we really not have this?

A character is in a difficult situation. Maybe they are fighting and on the side of losing, maybe things are just getting more and more hopeless and the character helpless. But then they have a flashback to an earlier time, Maybe it is a flashback of happier times. Maybe it is a flashback of their master/trainer teaching them how to fight. Maybe it is a flashback to really bad, troubled times.

Whatever it is, the character gets motivated and more hopeful. Whatever difficulty they have before them, they will most likely break through.

And I add this now:

Sometimes the flashback may remind the character's of a skill learnt long ago, thus literally making the character stronger, not just more motivated.

Example:

  • Samurai Jack: In "Jack and the Three Blind Archers", Jack remembers fighting against his training buddies in a blindfold, and his master telling him that "A great warrior must be in tune with all of his senses". He later uses this tactic, successfully, to dodge the blind archers' arrows.

OBJECTION!

Asked this in Trope Finder and got an answer but figured I would get confirmation here.

Is there a case that can be made for when a character cries, but then immediately turns happy when being asked or told something by another character, with their tears, red eyes, etc. completely gone like nothing ever happened?

Seen It a Million Times as a comedic gag. Mood-Swinger is close (it's the answer TF gave me), but from what I understand, that's a trope used to define a character's personality. This is more of a one-time thing from a character who isn't really prone to mood swings.
