Have an idea for a new trope, but don't know for sure if it's a good idea? Did Trope Finder give you similar concepts, but not exactly what you wanted? Are you just looking for a focus to a broader idea?

You've come to the right place!

On this thread, you can share your ideas with the masses before making that TLP draft, so if there's any lingering uncertainty about the validity of your idea or you just want some help pinning down a good idea, ask away and help others out, too!

A related sandbox I need to pitch is the Trope Idea Salvage Yard. If you've an idea but can't personally work on it, you can add it to the yard and let someone else create the draft. Or you can browse it yourself if you need more draft ideas, whether or not you feel they should be mentioned here first.

Got ideas for non-trope pages you need help with? Never fear, the New Page Workshop Thread is here!

With that out of the way: Let's discuss some ideas.

@Sean Murray: related but different. Alice need not forget that December 25th is also Bob's birthday, but that does not stop her from giving Bob a single present every year to celebrate both or lumping celebrating Bobs birthday with general "holiday festivities" for everyone.

If Bob begins to resent that treatment, it would be Overshadowed Birthday Angst, but not Forgotten Birthday

[up]Got it. I can't think of any examples, myself, but I'd give the proposal my endorsement, if enough could be found.

I've been thinking about making a draft for Signature Singing Style, which would be when a band's vocalist is recognizable by their singing style, for example Sebastian Grihm, who is recognizable for his croaky lower-mid-ranged bellow which can be heard here.

@amathieu13: There's an example from Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun: Mikoshiba's birthday is on Valentine's Day, so most of his classmates give him Valentine's chocolates as his birthday present, which he resents because he'd rather get a regular gift.

Hiya, back again, sorry! Tried Trope Finder but got blanked again.

Spent today trying to search for an equivalent of "accidentally walking in on a secret" because Welcomed to the Masquerade is about full-blown secret societies and The Unmasking is specific to superheroes and can involve intentional acts. I've got an example or two rattling around in my brainspace of characters who physically stumble into a revealing scene (turning them into completely unintentional on everyone's part Secret Keepers). Is this too overlappy with other stuff?

Tl;dr: Someone is unintentionally revealed a secret by simply seeing something/someone upon entering a room.

Honestly the more I write the worse I think this proposal is.

Sounds related to Parents Walk In at the Worst Time.

[up][up]There seem to be numerous tropes about someone walking in on another person (or pair of individuals) in compromising positions, including [up]this trope, Interrupted Intimacy, Sorry to Interrupt, Shower of Awkward, Primal Scene, Caught with Your Pants Down, and Not What It Looks Like. However, none of them really seem to necessarily be about a character "discovering a secret," unless an example happens to involve a secret tryst.

Elephant Men

A race of humanoid elephants (as opposed to anthropomorphic Elephants). Sometimes they either have just a trunk to pick up and manipulate things and have no proper fingers, other times they do.

Mythology and Religion

  • The god Ganesha of Hindu Mythology is the Ur-Example and most famous example in human media.... although technically he's not so much a humanoid elephant as someone who got their human head replaced by one after getting lopped off by another god.

Someone noted in the discussion for Post-Soviet Union's TLP draft that "Alternate History stories where the Soviet Union just continues without ever breaking up in the first place" is an obvious trope that we're missing, and I'm inclined to agree, but I'm also wondering if it really merits being its own trope rather than being considered just a specific manifestation of a broader trope about any Alternate History where a polity never fell like it historically did and instead continued for considerably longer timer (though not necessarily until our modern period). What do you guys think?

[up] That sounds like a recipe for drama, unless we keep it to other creators spreading rumors.

How about this one: Unknown Grudge.

Bob: Hello Alice, I'm Bob. Alice: So you're Bob... you're going to pay for what you did. Bob: Um, I'm sorry? What are you talking about? (Alice leaves without elaborating)

Basically, a character has a grudge against someone else, but the other party has no idea what it could possibly be. Could be related to But for Me, It Was Tuesday, but in that case the party being accused is a villain/mercenary who's committed so many atrocities/killed so many people that they honestly don't recall this particular one at all. 'Unknown Grudge' would be a bit more generalized.

Example: In Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Trials And Tribulations, Godot the prosecutor really seems to hate the title character, calling him 'Trite' out of spite. Phoenix has no idea who Godot is or why he hates him so, at least until the final case of the game.

In Bowling for Soup's "I Got Beat Up By A Girl", the girl beats up the narrator for doing an unspecified something, and when he asks for clarity she just punches him.

Was thinking about a disambig at If Looks Could Kill because there's both a Film and a Song and it sounds like Death Glare...

And that led me onto "If we are gonna trope pure songs more than the 2 times we're already doing so, wherever they were, What would the index be called?"

[up]That really doesn't seem tropeworthy, the same way "The Protagonist of a work is almost never The Smart Guy of their team" isn't a trope. A likely reason for that is that most works that feature Elemental Powers also use Elemental Tiers, and water, for some reason, is often placed rather low on that list.

@ Unknown Grudge: There's an example from Yureka where a game moderator has a grudge on the main characters and frequently try to get them in trouble. When they ask her what they've done to earn her ire, she can't even remember herself, but continues to cling to her old grudge.
