Denis Villeneuve's Dune

To be fair to Villeneuve though, Rautha had basically no role in the part of the book that's covered by the movie. There's like, one or two chapters taking place on Giedi Prime, and I think Rautha is only in one of them, learning from De Vris and the Baron on how to go about kanly and whatnot.

As long as he gets a proper introduction in Part 2 (where I imagine Harkonnens will be more prominent characters) I don't see an issue.

By the way, we talked about shields earlier… What happens to those? In all three adaptations I’ve watched, the shields seem to just… vanish from existence after the Sardaukar assault. Is there a reason?

Well you can't wear shields in the desert, so the Fremen don't use them. They were there during the attack on the testing facility in the 2021 movie though. You can see both Duncan and the Sardaukar wearing them.

[up] You can't use em on most of Arrakis because it drives the worms nuts, so people go without there most of the time

Also, the static electricity generated by sandstorms shorts them out, but that's not relevant to any of the scenes in the first half of the book.

It's not like this movie followed the shield's rules anyway. I defy anyone to watch Duncan's last stand and tell me which strikes were supposed to be slow and which were fast.

Duncan is just that much of a Master Swordsman that you can't see him slow his blade at just the right moment ;)

That is kind of the point, actually. A trained shield-fighter is so good at slowing their strikes at the last second that you never see them coming. That training is so ingrained among the armies of the Imperium and the Great Houses that they aren't prepared for folks like the Fremen who fight without shields.

We don't specifically see it in the film — it would be devilishly hard to do, so I'm not upset — but in the book it's very clear that Paul is "missing" his strikes against Jamis because he's conditioned to expect a shield intercepting his blows. In fact, this is the main advantage Jamis has over Paul besides the latter's inexperience with combat to the death. In all other respects, Paul is an overwhelmingly superior fighter.

At least we know the final battle in the Villeneuve version won't involve "Sonic weapons" for whatever reason Lynch decided to put those in.

I suppose Lynch wanted to make it slightly more believable that the Fremen would kick everyone’s asses. But real life has taught us that numbers and weapons aren’t everything in a war.

Eh, Lynch wanted something fancy and cool, but the thing about the Duniverse is that both its society and technology have been stagnant for thousands of years thanks in large part to the proscription on computers: sort of a sci-fi Medieval Stasis. It makes no sense within that context for the Atreides to have secretly developed these weird sonic weapons.

(Technology explodes after Leto II's reign, for reasons that are shown in the books, but that's a serious digression.)

Weren't the guns that shoot when you call out words put in because Lynch thought the Bene Geseret "voice" would be too hard for the audience to understand? Actually, now that I type that, that does sound like a bad rumour.

Streaming data: 1.9 million accounts streamed Dune opening weekend, with all the usual caveats and difficulties of trying to compare streamer data to box office haul.

[up][up]It wasn't about the Voice, it was about the Weirding Way itself, as Lynch didn't think it would work on film.

And while this film seems to have rejected that mentality, Jessica's combat style doesn't really represent the psuedo-Flash Step the books sometimes describe.

They did make some brief mention of it, though going by what Stilgar said it seemed like he was referring more to the Bene Gesserit fighting style in general.

Yeah, he identifies Jessica as a weirding woman. It did seem like a happy medium between ignoring the Way altogether and between making it look like a slightly more fantastical martial art.

Having thought about it now, I think Jessica may have been my favorite character in the movie, simply because Ferguson does a great job of balancing her many sides.

Nobody has any idea yet how to make sense of streaming data and how that translates to box office. [lol] But it's fairly good compared to their other tentpoles. Another good metric for Legendary/WB would be how many accounts signed up for Dune.

Director Denis Villeneuve and Warner Bros. Want to Make ‘Dune: Part II.’ So Why Hasn’t the Sequel Been Announced Yet?

In short, it’s not really Warner Bros.’ decision to make, though the studio could opt not to distribute the film. However, that move seem unlikely given the positive reception to “Dune” and the media company leadership’s evident enthusiasm for all things Atreides.

Legendary Pictures, the company that co-financed “Dune” in addition to producing and developing the interplanetary adventure, owns cinematic rights to the property and therefore determines whether or not a follow-up film will take place. Oftentimes after a movie opens to No. 1 at the box office, Hollywood players would capitalize on positive headlines by fast-tracking a sequel. Case in point: mere minutes after “Wonder Woman 1984” set a then-pandemic box office record with $16.9 million in North America, Warner Bros. announced plans for a third installment with star Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins.

Why Legendary has yet to unveil plans for a sequel remains ambiguous, though an announcement could come shortly, according to insiders. Legendary and Warner Bros. declined to comment.

Knock on wood but I think a part two is pretty much guaranteed at this point. Denis has been talking like it is lately at any rate

https://www.gamesradar.com/dune-2-fun-box-office/

He already has his designs on the sequel and how to address some of the pacing issues from the first movie. Honestly, now that the world has been built and the average asshole knows what a "Sardukar" and a "Fremen" is I think the next one is gonna flow like water

Well, realistically he would have been thinking about that sequel anyway. I can't imagine how you would do a part one without thinking about what a part two of the same story would look like.
