The clock struck midnight high above the streets of Vera City, and as it did the world seemed to fall into darkness. Tall lamp posts flickered for a moment before dying, the stores dimmed until there was nothing left but utter blackness. And high above on the cities clock tower a figured cloaked in black opened a book. "So much to do in so little time. Thirteen strikes of the clock, thirteen voices to call their names, thirteen dreams to be remade, and thirteen-" the figure faltered in their speech, their free hand rising to their hidden face. "Not quite yet it seems, but still." he snapped his fingers and the darkness beside him took physical shape, a humanoid figure with bright flames for eyes, slowly filling in each detail with color until a man dressed in rich purples and blacks stood by his side.

"Judge Frollo, your story ended with your desires swallowed by flames. But you need not suffer any longer, all you must do is wish upon a star," the figure raised their hand to the sky, a blazing red light breaking through the utter darkness of the sky, drawing the mans eyes to it.

The mans face contorted into a black grin, a sword of flames appearing in one hand and a book in the other. Behind him the shadows danced and swirled, forming the figures of knights, their bodies formed of ash and flame under scorched armor. "Death to the heretics, in the name of god only I am worthy to judge this world." Frollo smiled over the city, his eyes filled with the fire of madness.

"Of course," the shadowed figure stepped back into the dark, blending in with it once more. "Your wish is granted."

The door between fiction and reality has been broken, and out from this break leaks the stories of old into the world once more. The Mysterious Figure summons up villains and monsters from these old tales to grant their wish with his vengeful star, and should their desire be meet before the sun shines down on the world once more the fragile wall holding the divide will be shattered forever, letting magic and madness spread back into the world.

But just as in old stories for every villain there exists heroes to counter them and bring peace to the world once more. The spirits of these heroes entered through to our reality, finding hosts who are willing to hold back the tide of evil spreading through the world. So long as they can hold until the sun rises the damage caused by the villains will be rendered void as reality takes hold again.

Take on your part, live as a hero by night and protect the world from the evil that waits. And discover the mystery behind what left the divide in the first place.

Interested but I want to see what other people do first. Have a couple ideas that might not entirely fit what you seem to be looking for. Not quite traditional heroes and in one case a matter of Pragmatic Villainy, someone who doesn't want the world wrecked because he wants to run it.

I had strings, but now I'm free...

...

  • Name: Byron Ciril
  • Age: 17
  • Hero: Pinocchio
  • Skills: Bonding with Pinocchio allows Byron to have control over strings and thread at his leisure, using them mainly for restricting targets, controlling their movements and using them as weapons. In addition, bonding with a puppet allows for acute increase in his dexterity and nimbleness, making him very fast and very spry.
  • Equipment: Byron doesn't carry much on him except for some essentials. A face mask for his mouth, some pain killers and some extra medicine for when his coughing fits start acting up. In addition he carries some spools of thread and strings for blatantly obvious reasons, even though he has an abundance.
  • Personality: Byron is a shy introvert and doesn't exactly like communicating with people for extended periods of time. He truly does want to help people though and will aid when he feels he's needed. He's a good man at heart but you will be hard pressed to keep him around without him going catatonic and not in a medical way.
  • Backstory: For as long as Byron could remember, he's been attached to tubes, hoses and wires in the hospital. Diagnosed with lung Cancer at a young age and struggling for most of his life to fight it off, he found himself in a bed more than out of it, growing weaker and weaker with each passing day. His mom and dad were supportive as parents often were but even they knew he wasn't going to make it okay, make it better. No, the best they could do was just...make him comfortable. And now, even Byron at such a young age long since accepted the idea of his death and made peace with it. However, that all changed when...well, there was no real easy way to describe it but Pinocchio himself appeared before him and offered him a chance to make a difference, to make peoples lives better than his own while fighting for his own destiny. Based on the fact his nose wasn't growing, Byron had little reason to not believe him. And so bonding with a Fairy Tale creature revitalizing something inside of him, Byron took it upon himself to help those in need and not be reduced to a whimpering wheezing shadow of his former self.
  • Appearance: Incredibly basic looking but with an added fragility to it. Byron's hair is dark black and very short, only about reaching his eyes and incredibly messy, hard to manage. His eyes are dark with extremely heavy bags under them. He tends to get cold easily so he keeps a jacket/duster on him at all times, which also adds to his "thread/string ammo". He almost always has his mask on his face and looks still sickly but somehow healing...miraculously almost.
  • Misc: To be added at a later date!

...

...there are no strings on me.

Is it selfish that I'm happy as we pass the setting sun?

It has to be a character from a fairy tale like story, through tou can stretch it to fit legendary heroes or tricksters so long as they aren't irredeemable. And no, feel free to pull from any tale within reason. Please dont make Shrek, while this RP is unlikely to take itself fully seriously all the time I'm not going to accept meme entries.

Also the contractor of Pinocchio is in.

I have no idea what I've just made. Help.

  • Name: Maybelle "Mae" Ruskin-Todd
  • Age: 17
  • Hero: Robin Goodfellow (more commonly known as "Puck")
  • Skills: Bonding with Puck allows Mae to take on some of the more illusory traits of a faerie sprite—allowing her to shapeshift herself into different visages (usually humanoid but also some animals for kicks), project convincing (and usually mind-bending) illusions in her immediate area, and coat herself in a form of perception filter; making herself ignorable to those not aware or actively trying to make themselves aware of her. Mae is also rendered more lightfooted and nimble than before, and her movements appear more inhuman and unnaturally spry when she gets herself going.
  • Equipment: Mae carries an odd collection of knickknacks and trinkets in a small rucksack; "collections" of "interesting things" she has "come across" (the abundance of quotation marks being deliberate). Most if not all of these items are useless but hold much sentimental value to Mae, and she seems to be extremely possessive of the things she claims to have simply "found".
  • Personality: Mae is odd and off-kilter, sporadic yet strangely quiet in demeanour and more inclined towards listening and commenting than causing a fuss to start with. She is mostly reactionary and doesn't seem to function well without people to work off of, and responds best to those she deems as fascinating or conversationally compelling even if she doesn't hold much actual sympathy for them. Mae finds a certain glee in tormenting those who she perceives as being cruel or petty, and pranks them relentlessly with the odd illusion or other mind-screw—a tendency that can unintentionally leak through even towards the people she genuinely likes. Mae is ultimately an eccentric that keeps to herself, but seems much more interested in other people's lives than her own anyway—oftentimes neglecting herself in favour of the next person who she finds interesting enough to approach and "test out".
  • Backstory: Mae's reluctance to focus on herself is by itself indicative that she hasn't exactly had a happy history. Mae effectively grew up bouncing from foster home to foster home, and her latest family seem no more pleased to have to deal with her habits and tendencies than any of the ones before. It is perhaps this constant series of effective rejections that's been motivating Mae to focus so much on the people around her—whether to intensely study them like some sort of lab rat or to joyfully punish them via underhanded prank if they don't meet her standards. Mae's by now reaching the age where even more expectation is to be planted on her shoulders, and she simply couldn't care less about it; favouring instead her laidback and mischief-filled lifestyle. These very tendencies eventually ended up attracting the attention of a certain sprite, one also known for his general misdemeanors and tricksy attitude—and after bonding with him, Mae has only been given even more of an excuse to act disruptively and without cause. Until she finds herself one, of course.
  • Appearance: 5'11". Lanky and long, built like an overgrown weed and with hair about as kempt as a used mop. Seems to have trouble matching her expressions to the general atmosphere—not that she particularly cares anyhow. Lazy demeanour, slight hunch and a somewhat drunken swagger to her movements (though this evolves into the flailing of a limp-limbed gazelle when acting with a little more energy). Despite her odd disposition, her filter renders her strangely boring to most passersby.
  • Misc:
    • Has previously taken to wearing alternating bizarre accessories just to test how far her perception filter can go—including an overlong knitted scarf, two stacked fedoras, a single fez, and a hi-viz jacket before she eventually gave up. However, she still wears an array of multicoloured bangles along her arms as a remnant of this experiment—though more out of a genuine like for them instead of morbid curiosity.

Welp, this is a thing. Time to whop that steel on down.

  • Name: Louis Freeman
  • Age: 17
  • Hero: John Henry
  • Skills: Even before bonding with a steel-driving man, Louis was strong and good with his hands. Skilled at carpentry, plumbing, even fixing cars. After meeting his hero, his strength is outright superhuman - his hammer blows are comparable to the explosives used for railway blasting. He can even tunnel his way through rock with his hammer alone. Naturally, he also has knowledge of the ins and outs of laying railway track, including driving steel.
  • Equipment: As expected, he carries a mighty sledgehammer, half as long as Louis is tall. Along the handle is inscribed "This belongs to a steel-driving man." He can banish or summon it at will, regardless of distance, summoning it back to his hand as needed. He also carries a mundane tool belt, because you never know when you'll need to fix something.
  • Personality: Kind, strong-willed, and not one to raise his voice. A simple, hard working man, who just wants what's best for people. Some people may think he's easily fooled, but he's actually just very trusting. He believes there's good in just about everyone, and that everyone can be a good person, if they're just willing to work for it. Despite this, he won't hesitate to get into a scrap, especially to protect the innocent.
  • Backstory: Born to hard working parents, Louis's mother and father both had to work full time to make ends meet. Left alone much of the time, Louis daydreamed about being a superhero. But he knew that was just a fantasy, so he taught himself something useful: how to fix things. This proved fortunate when his father was laid off from the factory he worked at. Working part time, he helped his father set up a handyman's business, and the two of them bonded over hammering, drilling, and sanding. A simple life, but one Louis could be happy with. Then one day, Louis was visited by the spirit of none other than John Henry himself. Agreeing whole-heartedly to fight, Louis will stand up to evil until his heart gives out.
  • Appearance: 6'4", with dark caramel skin and a dark buzzcut. Usually wears boots with either overalls or jeans, and prefers sleeveless shirts to stay cool. Broad-shouldered, Louis is built for lifting and hammering, with great big arms and hands. On his right bicep is a tattoo of a broken chain.

  • Name: Shannon Hawkins
  • Age: 15
  • Hero: The Little Match Girl
  • Skills:
    • Strike A Light: Shannon can summon survival supplies (such as food, clothing, equipment, money, etc.) by striking a match, which will disappear when the flame burns out. However, there are ways to circumvent this, such as by transferring the match's fire onto a candle or an old-timey lantern. As soon as the supplies have been "used" and "claimed" by someone in genuine need of them (a rich man cannot use the coins the matches summon, they will melt in his hands), then they will no longer disappear. Additionally, striking a match can summon up specters of the dead, who cannot physically interact with the world, but can be asked questions and give advice in return. The specters cannot be summoned twice in one day.
    • Other: Her (well-off but irresponsible) uncle taught her how to use a gun and ride horses, but it's been a while since she last practiced. Trying to use these skills for the first time in such a long time will no doubt involve some amount of fumbling. She can also ride a bicycle fairly well, and reads a lot of advanced books for someone her age. Shannon also knows rudimentary first-aid information.
  • Equipment:
    • Swiss Army Knife: A gift from her father. It has a 3'' knife and various other useful attachments.
    • Antique Lighter: A gift from her uncle. She barely uses it since gaining her powers, but she still carries it around.
    • Various Hotel Matchbooks: Shannon has collected a lot of matchbooks from the hotels she has stayed at with her family. She uses these to fuel her powers.
  • Personality: Shannon is generally an inquisitive and quiet girl, which makes people think she is shy. She likes to ask a lot of questions about things, and doesn't like it when she's not given a good reason to do something. If she feels that something is afoot, she will be the first to go and see what's up. She can be quite audacious and bold, given the right reason, and likes to take care of others.
  • Backstory: Shannon's family was never well-off, but her parents work hard to support their little family and make sure that all of their children are well-fed. They don't have a permanent address, and instead choose to live in various hotels around the city. Shannon's parents encourage her inquisitiveness about the world and do their best to push her towards getting a good education. Shannon herself is very bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, and often volunteers to help others in more dire straits than herself. When bullies locked her out of her school on a particularly snowy and windy day, the Little Match Girl appeared before her and chose her to carry on her legacy.
  • Appearance: Shannon is a girl with light brown eyes and waist-length black hair that she wears in two thick fishtail braids. She wears a tan duffel coat over a white button-up shirt, a black pleated knee-length skirt (with bloomers), knee-high woolen socks, a pair of flat-heeled leather boots, and a pair of black rectangular wire-rimmed glasses. She is 5'1'' and weighs 115 lbs.

Name: Elissa Kai Andersdatter

Age: 16

Hero: The Snow Queen

Skills: Cryomancy: She has full control of ice and snow which she can use for offensive, defensive, and evasive purposes.

Equipment:

  • Backpack: A backpack that was hand-embroidered by Elissa's mother.

Personality: Cynical and misanthropic; Elissa may seem emotionless at first glance, but in reality she's incredibly empathetic, even if she hardly shows it. She's had a special interest in fairy tales since she was a little girl, and it persists to this day as a form of escapism.

Backstory: Born as a naturalized American citizen to first-generation Danish immigrants, Elissa was diagnosed with Autism shortly before starting preschool. It was around this time that her love of fairytales first emerged, always paying rapt attention whenever her parents read to her before bedtime or during storytime at school. However, everyone knew something was different about her, and while her parents and teachers were supportive (if slightly misguided), her peers were not so kind. Starting in elementary school, her classmates looked for any reason they could to mock her, whether it be her freckles, her accent, or any "weird" mannerisms she displayed. By the time she reached eighth grade, Elissa pretty much closed herself off from others altogether, spending many of her lunchtimes in the school library and acting cold to people who approached her. This quickly gave her a reputation of being an "Ice Queen". Flash forward to her junior year, and she's still as alone as ever, with her only friends being members of an online fantasy writers' forum. However, one night, she had a dream. In this dream, she found herself out in a snowy forest when she spots a crystalline spire poking out above the trees. When she follows the direction of where the spire is, she finds a beautiful palace made of ice. As she approaches it, the doors open wide to beckon her inside. Stepping in, she sees an equally beautiful woman sitting upon a throne wearing what appears to be a fur coat (which is actually made of frost upon further inspection) and an icy crown upon her head. "Elissa Kai Andersdatter," the woman said in a regal contralto tone, "I have been expecting you." "How do you know who I am?" Elissa meekly replied. "I've been observing you for quite a while, and from what I've seen, we're quite alike. We both know how cruel the world is. But, I have an opportunity for you to make it at least somewhat better." "What would that entail?" Elissa asked. "It's quite simple," the icy figure answered, "I would use your body as a host vessel, and in return you'll gain my powers of ice and snow. You would be yourself, while also being me." The woman, who Elissa realized was the Snow Queen, held out her hand expectantly as she inquired, "So, do we have a deal?" After pondering her offer for a while, Alissa took the Queen's hand and gave a nod of affirmation. With this, the Queen disappeared and an icy wind carried Elissa away as she woke up. She thought a dream was all it was, but it didn't take long for her to realize that it was more real that she had thought.

Appearance: Pale complexion dotted with freckles, icy blue eyes, and long strawberry-blonde hair worn loose to hide her features. She is of average height and has a petite build. Elissa prefers to dress for comfort rather than style, so most of what she wears consists of T-shirts, flannels, and hoodies, typically wearing jeans and sneakers/boots on her bottom half. When the Snow Queen's influence is particularly strong, her hair turns a translucent white and her skin turns blue with snowflake-like freckles.

Misc: She tends to speak quietly to compensate for hiding her natural Danish accent. She also tends to stammer when looking for the right word to say in a sentence.

Note: I realize that in the original fairy tale, the Snow Queen is the antagonist, but I think she's morally grey enough to be an Anti-Hero here.

  • Name: John Lawson
  • Age: 16
  • Hero: Vainamoinen (actual name is Finnish but the site can't handle the characters correctly)
  • Skills: John has 2 main abilities granted by Vainamoinen: Bard's voice and Aeromancy
    • Aeromancy: John can create and control the air/wind for a variety of purposes.
    • Bard's voice: John's singing can have a variety of effects on those who hear his singing, depending on who hears it.
  • Skills John has independent of Vainamoinen:
    • Dexterity: John is incredibly agile, given the fact that he's one of the best in the school's track team.
    • Martial arts: John has moderate experience in kickboxing.
    • Great cardio: John does cardio often, and is even better at running because of it.
  • Equipment:
    • A cell phone.
    • A fancy watch he got from a rich friend as a prize for helping him win a bet.
    • A wallet with some cash.
  • Personality: John is quite a reckless individual who loves to help others at his own expense, which is reflected when he makes jokes about his own failures.
  • Backstory:
    • John was always someone who had a strong sense of justice and did track so he could stay in shape to be strong for people when they needed it. Unfortunately for John, this secret slipped out and led to him getting made fun of for needing track to keep his self-esteem in check.
    • One night, when he was feeling particularly down, he went to bed thinking less than favorable thoughts when he found himself in a dream that was that had a landscape of a wasteland, with bombardments constantly striking the surface. He tried so hard to wake up to no avail when he saw an old man walking over to him calmly. "Are you afraid of this land?" the old man said to him. "Yeah, I'm afraid, shit's a wasteland," John responded. "Then you fear yourself." The old man responded. "Are you saying I'm a complete mess? You'd be right..." John said back, realizing that the dream was a reality check of sorts. "I know I'm right, but do you want to improve this situation?" the old man asked John. "What do you mean by that, gramps?" John asked him, intrigued at what kind of crazy stuff his mind had come up with. "You act as a vessel, and I grant you not only the power of the winds but also the ability to soothe and strengthen others in their times of struggle" the old man offered John. "So this is like a contract, huh? What're the requirements I must fulfill to keep these powers, then?" John asked the old man. "Use the powers for good, that is all I ask, John." the old man finished. "Sweet, and what's your name?" John asked the old man. "Vainamoinen." said the old man as the dream ended. John dismissed it as a wake-up call, but he soon realized that it was more real than he believed.
  • Appearance: 6'2" tall, caucasian skin, oriental gray eyes, black hair, a grey t-shirt, a black hoodie, navy sweatpants, grey running shoes, as well as blue mirrorshades that he insists on wearing nearly all the time.
  • Misc:
    • If he ever feels overwhelmed or depressed, he will go on an intense run.
    • He yells in Russian when very upset.
    • If he can't find the right words to say, he'll do finger guns to make it seem like he's planning something clever.

  • Name: Lucy Jacob-West
  • Age: 16
  • Hero: Mina Harker
  • Skills:
    • This Calls For Some Research: Mina Harker is on hand as a second soul to help read through books and discuss theories. Beyond just having a sharp-witted second person in Lucy's head, this confers no supernatural enhancement and doesn't even provide any books.
    • Connected By Blood: Should the ancient vampire Count Dracula escape from fiction to reality one of these nights, the telepathic bond between him and Mina Harker reawakens. This allows Lucy to get a vague idea of what the vampire is hearing and seeing. The downside is that this works both ways, allowing Dracula to eavesdrop in return.
  • Equipment:
    • A sturdy school backpack
    • A library card
    • A smartphone on a strict data plan
    • A notebook and a pack of cheap biro pens
  • Personality: Lucy is bold and willing to speak her mind most of the time because she is often sure she is correct on matters. However if challenged and shown proof she is willing to back down and examine the evidence before speaking up on whether she's changed her mind or not. Even when she's deeply involved in reading she'll often talk (to herself if noone is around) about any insights she's gleaned from any given book.
  • Backstory: Lucy's family has a comfortable middle-class existence without any of the hallmarks of conventional heroic trauma but like Mina's story heroism begins with a friend fallen ill. When one of the few people able to put up with Lucy's attitude was caught outside one night and failed to turn up to school the next day she outright skipped the second half of the school day to walk to her friend's house to find out what had happened. Lucy's friend was injured and faint, riddled with vague symptoms and unable to give more than scant details that didn't make sense on a surface level, which is what led Lucy to sneak into the school library that night, grab every book on medicine she could find on the shelves and start searching for some way the symptoms could match up. She almost froze stiff when she felt someone reading over her shoulder and a suspiciously gentle voice say "No that's not right. I suspect this is not a mundane disease miss West". Precious time was lost on explanations and introductions and Lucy had started to assume that this was some kind of hallucination as she accepted the help and grabbed books of a more mythological bent to leaf through. To make a long story short, it turns out the answer is very likely lycanthropy which Lucy is still trying to figure out the best time and place to bring up the topic around her friend and how to even go about curing such a curse before the next full moon.
  • Appearance: Lucy is a short and unassuming library gremlin; With short-trimmed brown hair and piercing green eyes. She's not well-built physically, choosing to spend most of her free time absorbing knowledge and drilling down what she needs for the next exam.
  • Misc: Occasionally Mina will opine that Dr Helsing's cultural evolution into a dashing crossbow-wielding monster hunter would of made him much more useful than herself for the current situation but she is thankful to be able to help regardless. Lucy on the other hand could think of no better protection in these dark nights than Mina's capable guidance.

It's clearly a case of backroom political albumizing.

Both of you are accepted, can't wait to see what you do!

Spots are still open as I'm always aware of the start of RP tax when it comes to players, we will be starting Monday 4/6 but so long as you get a character sheet out before Frollo is defeated and depending on character sheet you can still be accepted.

Can we use Archetypes? For example, Jack being Jack O' Latern as well as the giant slayer?

Good to be back

I'd rather you stick to one, that way other people have more options.
