The Hindsight tropes, Hilarious in Hindsight, Harsher in Hindsight, and Heartwarming in Hindsight, are among the most misused Audience Reaction tropes on this site. Many people don't understand that the tropes require more than just "This happened, so that happened", and end up adding examples which either lack connection or the substance that makes them funny/serious/not-so-funny/heartwarming. Some of them may be suited better for other tropes (ex: Life Imitates Art), while some may not belong on TV Tropes at all (such as ones involving politicians, due to Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment).

Please report any Hindsight example that you feel are questionable, and we'll analyze them to see if they are actually examples or not.

Remember that the Hindsight tropes are Audience Reactions. That means if an example under review discusses significant fan response pointing out the hindsight, the example can't be cut solely for being too tenuous for this thread.

    Common NOT in Hindsight examples
  • Creator's character/portrayal dies in work and then creator dies in real life, unless their fictional death is closely similar to their real one (such as Billy Bob Joe portraying a character who dies from pancreatic cancer, then Billy Bob dies from pancreatic cancer himself)
  • Mundane word related to something terrible (such as "corona" or "Epstein") unless there's more to the connection (such as someone named "Corona" having the flu)
  • Creator appears in work then becomes more controversial later on.
  • A common event (such as a typical natural disaster) happens in work, then happens in real life (unless they are closely similar, such as the event happening to the same area in both reality and fiction around the same time) For once, not everything related to disease has to do with COVID-19, not everything related to racism and Police Brutality has to do with George Floyd and Black Lives Matter, and not everything related to sexual abuse has to do with #MeToo.
  • A common/generic concept was used in this work and then later reused in that work (too loose for a connection, unless the concept is so unique it's identified with the work)
  • Two actors appear together then do so in another work
  • Hindsight examples involving recent events, due to them often being shoehorns. Specifically:
    • COVID-19 examples, before 75% of the population has returned to normal
    • George Floyd/2020 Black Lives Matter examples, before protests have declined
  • Examples which fall guilty of Older Than They Think, such as "Make X Great Again" slogans. Aside from violating the ROCEJ, this slogan has been in use since the 1940s.
  • Characters using slurs which are treated as annoying at worst in the work, but is now harsher due to how severe the slur is made now. Discrimination has always existed with that slur. (May qualify for Values Dissonance if work is at least 20 years old.)

Note: As of January 2022, "Funny Aneurysm" Moment is no longer separate from Harsher in Hindsight.
  • The former redirects to the latter and all wicks to the former (with the exception of ones on archive pages and the YMMV Redirects index) must either be moved to the latter (if they're valid) or removed (if they're invalid).
  • The subpages for the former are still accessible from this page. After a subpage for "Funny Aneurysm" Moment has been completely cleaned up, turn it into a redirect to the Harsher in Hindsight subpage for the same medium to preserve inbounds.

Actually, on second thought, I'm coming around to the idea of not having a hard-and-fast rule banning COVID-19 examples entirely. I mean, the thread is having to constantly whack dumb shoehorns as it is, so if the idea behind the rule was to make it easier to stop them, it's clearly not going to work.

Hell, most examples of anything that come up in this thread are dumb shoehorns.

YMMV.Danganronpa V 3 Killing Harmony is an utter mess.

    Examples (folderized for length)
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Kaede's death is harsh by itself, but getting to the final trial and figuring out she was innocent makes it even worse. She died believing she caused the death of her friend and her friends watched the cruel and agonizing execution of an innocent person that literally didn't deserve it while the actual blackened was happily living between them.
      • In the demo mode, Kaede's suspected of a murder she didn't commit (especially since Yasuhiro is apparently faking his death), and uses a lie to deflect suspicion off of Makoto. In the final game, she uses a lie to prevent Shuichi from being suspected, then gets executed for, as mentioned above, a murder she didn't commit.
    • The scene where Miu repairs Keebo was already pretty controversial, but after The Reveal that Keebo is a first-person camera, added on that Miu is actually a Reluctant Fanservice Girl that doesn't enjoy having an audience stare at her, as shown in Chapter 2 with this particular CG scene with Gonta, it certainly puts the scene in a whole new light...
    • Pretty much anything relating to Tsumugi after The Reveal that she's the mastermind of the killing game and true culprit of Chapter 1, having set up Kaede to take the fall for Rantaro's murder. Even their rather cute Love Hotel ending is pretty hard to enjoy knowing that they are actually a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing, while the more Jerkass students got endings that at least stay true to their characters. Made even worse by the fact the they are one of the few "hookups" that Shuichi consents to.
      • What is even more harsher is like the rest of the cast, she ended up crying as Kaede was revealed to be Rantaro's "killer". Knowing that Tsumugi is Rantaro's true killer, it is very likely that these were Crocodile Tears instead of generally not wanting Kaede to be executed.
      • The end of the demo reveals that Makoto, Hajime, and Yasuhiro were all just acting for the audience. In the main game, this turns out to be the entire setup of the killing game (it being a widely broadcast reality show) and all of its participants, only take away "acting" and replace it with "Fake Memories".
      • One of the hidden events takes place during Chapter 1, and involves Tsumugi inviting Kaede to the game room so she can paint her nails, only to run into Rantaro, who turns out to be quite a good nail painter himself. After he steals the spotlight from Tsumugi, her voice clip has her say "Rest in peace." Yeah....
    • If Kaito's audition tape (which shows him wanting to be part of the killing game so that he can kill lots of people) turns out to be true, then him being the 5th killer became a lot harder to take.
    • Both Super Danganronpa 2 and Ultra Despair Girls featured twists in which the events were a "game" in some form - in the former, it was a simulation like an actual video game setting, and in the latter, the girls' path through the city and the ammo drops were all pre-determined designs, and Danganronpa 3 drew visual comparisons between itself and Ryota's anime when the latter was described at points. All of these examples made heavy use of Leaning on the Fourth Wall dialogue that worked on both an in-universe and meta level. In Danganronpa V3, this is a major part of the plot and Chapter 6's trial has much of said dialogue taken Up To Eleven, creating a long line of harsh thematic foreshadowing the fandom progressively got less and less accepting of until V3 became the "breaking point" for it in more ways than one.
    • As tragic as Gonta's death was, it became a lot sadder once it was revealed that the outside world was just fine meaning that Gonta murdered somebody all because of something that wasn't real in the first place. Assuming Kirumi's motive was also honest not only is she in the same boat but the "responsibilities" she thought she was acting on trying to protect "her nation" were all equally fake.
    • Hagakure's side comment about how his "character hadn't been established yet" in the first game can seem a little cringeworthy when paired up with the big reveal of this game.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • One optional dialogue in Gonta's Free Time has Shuichi advising Gonta that he shouldn't let himself be too influenced by fictional characters. From the player's perspective, that's not only a paradoxical advice, but goes directly against Shuichi's beliefs in the final trial.
    • In a meta sense, Miu is a Lady Swears-a-Lot and her Japanese voice actress is played by one of the actresses who plays Chihiro Fujisaki (a.k.a. a character who never swears) in the Danganronpa The Stage play. So, in a way, this game will kinda have many swear words coming out of the voice of Chihiro Fujisaki.
    • Korekiyo's voice actors, Kenichi Suzumura and Todd Haberkorn, both played Hikaru Hitachiin in Ouran High School Host Club which had a female crossdresser as its main lead, and as it turns out this time around they're playing a male crossdresser of sorts. Then this is either made better or worse with the reveal that he had an actual sexual relationship with his sister, considering playing up the Twincest trope was the Hitachiin twins' main act.
    • On the Danganronpa Subreddit, Tsumugi was voted as the most likely killer in this game. Turns out, Tsumugi is the Mastermind.
    • The mastermind cosplaying the past characters can make a lot of things Hilarious in Hindsight.
      • Danganronpa 3 has a meme of Kiyotaka being the mastermind. In this game, the mastermind actually cosplays as Kiyotaka (among others).
      • Another one related to Danganronpa 3: There was a fan theory that Chisa Yukizome was disguising herself as Aoi Asahina, which was met with controversy due to the Unfortunate Implications of brownface. Another of Tsumugi's cosplays is of Hina.
      • The Threegami meme has became more hilarious once the Mastermind cosplays as both Togami and Twogami. Not only there was a Threegami but a Fourgami.
      • In the first game, Monokuma gives the students a picture that had some of the students think the other students were working together as co-masterminds. Given how the mastermind ended up cosplaying those "other students", it may not entirely be a farfetched idea.
      • Some months after the game has been released in Japan, Junko Enoshima was listed as the "Most Popular Game Character to Cosplay" in the 2018 Games Edition of the Guinness World Records. It seems Tsumugi has an influence there.
    • When people critized Shuichi for taking over Kaede's role as the protagonist, Shuichi gets the last laugh as Keebo replaces Shuichi himself as the protagonist at the end.
    • A day before the game's release, somebody ended up making a video of Kokichi dancing to "What The Hell" in a similar way to "What The Hell, Komaeda" memetic video. It makes the comparison between those boys more ironic.
    • In Danganronpa 3, Karen Kisaragi, the girl when who went Axe-Crazy during the Student Council killing game over her mother, was voiced by Honoka Inoue. Honoka's mother Kikuko Inoue is in this game as Kirumi Tojo. Even more amusingly, Kirumi is also a killer.
    • Both Alter Ego Junko and Nagito both predicted the events of Chapter One where Kaede ended up being the killer. Slightly subverted when Kaede was actually innocent.
    • Depending if you view Shuichi as a Vanilla Protagonist or not, it becomes quite ironic that Kokichi ended up viewing him as somebody who was so interesting that he can't figure him out.
    • Given The Reveal at the end, this Monokuma Theater segment from Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair becomes way more relevant now.
    • Many have noticed Kirumi's resemblance to 2B, which only intensified when it was announced that Kira Buckland will be doing her voice in the English version.
    • Todd Haberkorn narrated a Watch Mojo video depicting the Top 10 Worst Girlfriends in Anime. Given The Reveal in Chapter Three, it made seem like Korekiyo is deciding which girls would not be good friends for his sister, especially since Ruruka Ando found herself on that list.
    • In the last days of the first game's Something Awful LP, one of the comments that came up when the trailer for Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair was posted upon seeing Hinata, Chiaki, and Komaeda was wondering if the Naegi-esque protagonist (in this case Hinata) would be killed off first in favor of what seemed to be his "detective" partner (Chiaki) or his rival (Komaeda). Two games and an anime later, this is somewhat reversed; the Naegi-esque detective becomes the protagonist after the partner-like main character uses a distinctly rivalesque debate style before being killed off.
    • The first few lines of the opening of Danganronpa: The Animation, "Never Say Never", rather concisely summarize some of the plot twists of Chapter 6.
Reality slips, far away. Fiction comes alive, we start to play. Hope is no more, behind a closed door, as we drift away from where we were before.
    • The psychopaths-only gladiator games in Killer Killer don't look so outlandish now that the Killing Game was revealed to be a killing game show. Bonus points for the stadium in the former being packed with bloodthirsty fans. And since the events of the Hope's Peak saga are revealed to be fiction in this verse, Killer Killer and the installment it spun off from seems to be the pure, distilled version of how the participants of V3 work in a different world— only difference is that the former two don't involve brainwashing of any kind.
    • In Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, players were initially led to believe that Togami had been brought back as a survivor of the previous killing game only to become the first victim. In V3, this is exactly what happens to Rantaro.

Bringing up the following examples from Prehistoric Earth:

  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Technically more of a case of 'awkward in hindsight', but the scenes in which Alice and Adrian interact in a quasi-romantic fashion together in some of the Phase 1 missions have since become a bit out of place after the originally intended arc between them got scrapped in favor of Alice's Will They or Won't They? arc with Will.
    • Considering how the #Me Too! Movement, and the revelation of Harvey Weinstein's behavior that triggered it, came about a few months or so after the chapter where Cynthia was introduced, just think of how much fire this story could have come under if Nathanoraptor hadn't axed the idea of Cynthia forcibly shoving Drew's head BETWEEN HER BREASTS when they first met.
    • In the wake of the #Black Lives Matter movement and all the related events that have since unfolded, Nathanoraptor has since come to regret including Kyle's 'black rage doesn't even begin to describe how I'm feeling at the moment' line. Not even his having the line be spoken in a sarcastic fashion in the finished product as opposed to being shouted as originally planned was enough to prevent Nathanoraptor from regretting this line's inclusion in the wake of this movement.
    • In a scene where Cynthia dismisses Leon as a lost cause immediately before his planned showcasing of his progress in training the allosaurus squad, writer!Drew made Nathanoraptor tone down Jack's rebuttal due to supposedly finding the originally planned rebuttal to be an uncharacteristically mean thing for Jack to say. In light of how, as since mentioned in the retrospective, writer!Drew himself reportedly projected one of his own real life traits onto PE!Drew despite said trait going against PE!Drew's planned characterization and also seemingly blatantly disregarded Nathanoraptor's planned characterization for Colette at one point (and very nearly TWO points), among other incidents involving characters and their personalities, his reasoning behind his desire for Nathanoraptor to tone down Jack's rebuttal sounds more than a little hollow and hypocritical.
    • On a similar note, the reveal of how writer!Drew initially didn't want to introduce Will and Matt in the story at all for the sake of planned scenes of supposed character development for Cynthia also qualifies now that it has since been revealed to be an early sign of both how Nathanoraptor himself had to fight to prevent several other already introduced planned prominent characters from getting dismissively upstaged by Cynthia as well as how several other prominent characters (i.e. Khatin, Colette, Linda, etc.) have since likewise been revealed to have had already ended up successfully upstaged in their own way by either PE!Drew, writer!Drew, or both, prior to that moment; not to mention of the fact that writer!Drew appears to have largely considered every prominent character that wasn't Cynthia and PE!Drew as being 'just side characters' in the story of Cynthia and PE!Drew.
    • Even though they mutually chose to do so and managed to stay friends on good terms afterward, the fact that Cynthia and PE!Drew chose to break up, followed by Cynthia herself leaving the park to go after the escaped von Grimm before then doing her own thing afterward with no guarantee of ever coming back to Prehistoric Earth to see Drew again, becomes this when it is taken into account how there's so far no guarantee that Cynthia herself will successfully join Drew and the rest of the 'main cast' amongst the Prehistoric Earth staff in making the jump to Prehistoric Park Reimagined.
    • The fact that Drew and Cynthia were the very first Official Couple amongst the rescue team also manages to somewhat become this as a result of the same factor described above since not only will Drew himself likely end up Alone Among the Couples in the event that the romances between Jack and Colette and Leon and Yolanda (all four of whom have made the jump to PPR) successfully come to be once more in the new continuity (and there's little reason to expect as much to not be the case), but there's also the fact that not only are Cynthia's own chances of making the jump and joining Drew in PPR still up in the air at best (as previously mentioned), but there are also no confirmed plans of any potential love interest character for Drew to take Cynthia's place in the event that Cynthia in fact does end up Adapted Out. And it becomes even more saddening if you choose to believe in Nathanoraptor's headcanon that they'd in fact been a couple and broken up prior to their hooking up in Spirits of the Silent Forest.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Scarlett Johansson portraying Linda Eberhart (at least that's how Nathanoraptor believes it could work). This certainly wouldn't be the first time she's played a somewhat kindly character who works at a zoo.
    • Turns out, Black Widow, Heimdall, and Spiderman have ended up working together at the exact same establishment; which is owned by the fake Mandarin, to boot!
    • To continue the MCU related hilarity, ABOMBINATION is the head of security!
    • And on yet more Marvel-related (though not necessarily MCU) hilarity, Will Simpson is the head of the park's research department and Cannonball is the leader of the rescue team!
    • And for that matter, we also have Kaa and Shere Khan working on the same team once more.
    • Nathanoraptor initially planned for the scenes immediately following Sharptooth's tranquilizing and defeat in Nightmare Labyrinthine to unfold in a style very similar to the 'monsters bowing to Godzilla after Ghidora's defeat' scene from Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)...at least one or two months before said film was even released and confirmed to feature such a scene!
    • While admittedly somewhat saddening at the same time, the fact that Cynthia chose to leave Prehistoric Earth at the end without any guarantee that she'd return also becomes this with the so far nonexistent confirmation as to whether or not she'll successfully make the jump to Prehistoric Park Reimagined alongside Drew and the rest of the 'main cast' Prehistoric Earth staff members. And in light of what Nathanoraptor has since revealed in a retrospective, it's entirely possible that some could yet find especially high reason for schadenfreude in Cynthia's departure than initially thought.

This is on Saturday Night Live:

  • Chadwick Boseman reprises the role of T'Challa in a new Black Jeopardy, and gives an answer that's clearly a reference to Shuri, which is a little harder to watch after Avengers: Infinity War and the release of character posters for Endgame, now that we know that not only was T'Challa lost in the snap, but he had no idea that Shuri was also gone. Also, a clue was about how to respond to the police questioning about robberies, T'Challa responded that police were there to protect us. Fast forward to the merciless killing of George Floyd, and the riots that followed. Finally, there's how the white woman involved in the salad is named..."Karen."
    • The sketch takes an even darker meaning when Boseman passed away in August of 2020 and the revelation he had been battling Stage 3 colon cancer for the last four years...meaning he was ill with it during this very show.

I'm pretty sure "Karen" was African-American vernacular for annoying white women a few years before it blew up in the mainstream. This sketch came out in 2018. "Black Lives Matter" was already a hashtag for at least three years by then, which was the joke in that very Black Jeopardy sketch.

Um, it's actually because we are grieving and trying to find hints of Chadwick's cancer being there all along. It's come out of nowhere and hit us like a sledgehammer, so we want to know why, why it had to be him.

Enforcing the rules is fine. Please remember that a lot of us have been sad since the weekend and knowing there are no answers. My dad didn't tell me he had cancer before he died, though my three older siblings knew, so it feels like deja vu.

I do think it might be harsher to see him in the Marvel movies where he does a lot of physically-exhausting stunt work knowing he was sick, and it's been pointed out that a lot of Memetic Mutation regarding his tired faces was really mocking a sick man for being visually exhausted. However, I don't think his SNL gig had anything that would be cringeworthy to watch knowing he was sick. Frankly I think trying to connect everything he was ever in to his death, regardless of whether it has any specific moment that brings his illness to mind, is a bit tasteless.

More examples relating to the pandemic on YMMV.The Angry Video Game Nerd under "Funny Aneurysm" Moment:

  • The Nerd's declaration that one may as well wipe their ass with the titular devices in Tiger Games because toilet paper is worth more became almost accurate during the toilet paper panic caused by the Covid 19 quarantines.
  • Along the same lines, his opening comments in the Majora's Mask episode about 2020 being the end of the world, and telling his games they have to wear masks, eerily telegraphs the 2020 pandemic.

I agree with that. The rules are the rules. Just remember that grief makes people do stupid things in the name of searching for answers. Mom said that after my dad died, I was stamping on her foot for a year and I do not remember that at all; I was ten.

It's okay to mark the examples as a shoehorn. I'm not protesting that; I'm protesting judging people that do it once and not again. It's not intentionally trolling or such. There isn't a thought process, just this intense wave of sadness.

I would also note that this thread has seen literally hundreds of Harsher in Hindsight or FAM shoehorns related to actor mortality, often extremely tenuous even by the definition of "shoehorn". Everyone who participates long-term is sick to death of (and, at least in my case, vaguely disgusted with) them. So if there's some hostility bleeding into posts here, it isn't directed at you or your example specifically.

  • Harsher in Hindsight: The Princess Peach is a cruise ship in which, when Mario first sets foot on it, is eerily empty, and whatever crewmembers remain are deathly frightened of something such that they can't even speak of it. Though it's later revealed it was attacked by Paper Macho Gooper Blooper, and you can later find and rescue all of the passengers, it does initially feel unsettlingly similar to the calamities that happened on real-world cruise ships brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
