The Hindsight tropes, Hilarious in Hindsight, Harsher in Hindsight, and Heartwarming in Hindsight, are among the most misused Audience Reaction tropes on this site. Many people don't understand that the tropes require more than just "This happened, so that happened", and end up adding examples which either lack connection or the substance that makes them funny/serious/not-so-funny/heartwarming. Some of them may be suited better for other tropes (ex: Life Imitates Art), while some may not belong on TV Tropes at all (such as ones involving politicians, due to Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment).

Please report any Hindsight example that you feel are questionable, and we'll analyze them to see if they are actually examples or not.

Remember that the Hindsight tropes are Audience Reactions. That means if an example under review discusses significant fan response pointing out the hindsight, the example can't be cut solely for being too tenuous for this thread.

    Common NOT in Hindsight examples
  • Creator's character/portrayal dies in work and then creator dies in real life, unless their fictional death is closely similar to their real one (such as Billy Bob Joe portraying a character who dies from pancreatic cancer, then Billy Bob dies from pancreatic cancer himself)
  • Mundane word related to something terrible (such as "corona" or "Epstein") unless there's more to the connection (such as someone named "Corona" having the flu)
  • Creator appears in work then becomes more controversial later on.
  • A common event (such as a typical natural disaster) happens in work, then happens in real life (unless they are closely similar, such as the event happening to the same area in both reality and fiction around the same time) For once, not everything related to disease has to do with COVID-19, not everything related to racism and Police Brutality has to do with George Floyd and Black Lives Matter, and not everything related to sexual abuse has to do with #MeToo.
  • A common/generic concept was used in this work and then later reused in that work (too loose for a connection, unless the concept is so unique it's identified with the work)
  • Two actors appear together then do so in another work
  • Hindsight examples involving recent events, due to them often being shoehorns. Specifically:
    • COVID-19 examples, before 75% of the population has returned to normal
    • George Floyd/2020 Black Lives Matter examples, before protests have declined
  • Examples which fall guilty of Older Than They Think, such as "Make X Great Again" slogans. Aside from violating the ROCEJ, this slogan has been in use since the 1940s.
  • Characters using slurs which are treated as annoying at worst in the work, but is now harsher due to how severe the slur is made now. Discrimination has always existed with that slur. (May qualify for Values Dissonance if work is at least 20 years old.)

Note: As of January 2022, "Funny Aneurysm" Moment is no longer separate from Harsher in Hindsight.
  • The former redirects to the latter and all wicks to the former (with the exception of ones on archive pages and the YMMV Redirects index) must either be moved to the latter (if they're valid) or removed (if they're invalid).
  • The subpages for the former are still accessible from this page. After a subpage for "Funny Aneurysm" Moment has been completely cleaned up, turn it into a redirect to the Harsher in Hindsight subpage for the same medium to preserve inbounds.

Are they proper examples for Hilarious in Hindsight? If not, are there alternative YMMV tropes to the trope? Being an audience reaction trope, I have to discuss first.

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: My Little Pony (Generation 5) getting its own alicorn named Opaline after Jewelpet had an alicorn named Opal. (From YMMV.Jewelpet.)
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In "Mission: Really Big Mission", when the Chameleon introduces himself to D.O.O.M., telling them he does impressions at the Chuckie Hut every other Friday night, he morphs into a look-alike of Po the Panda. Twelve years later, Kung Fu Panda 4 would feature a shapeshifting villainess called the Chameleon as its main antagonist. (From YMMV.TUFF Puppy)

What I think about the Jewelpet's one is:

  • I searched their images, they don't look like each other, and it could be just a coincidence bc Opal is a feminine given name or the well-known mineraloid's name. Also, the Jewelpet franchise itself's jewelpet names have mineralogy-themed names.

Checked YMMV.Grand Theft Auto V since the section is quite long. Splitting into two sections for Harsher and Hilarious.

    Harsher
  • One of the radio advertisements in the game is for a company that says it sells tiki torches that can be used if you need to form a drunken mob. After the events of the summer of 2017, in which white supremacist groups carried tiki torches while marching in several cities around the US leading to riots in which multiple people died, it doesn't come across as nearly as funny or harmless a joke. Possible stretch? Those rallies weren't drunken mobs.
  • The entire subplot involving the Minute Men becomes somewhat uncomfortable and extremely controversial in the wake of the Trump era, which came three years after the release of GTA V. Very vague. The subplot is about two xenophobic border patrol agents harassing undocumented migrants, and xenophobia has always been an issue.
  • Everything about Peter Dreyfuss, a filmmaker who used his connections and influence in Vinewood to get away with genuinely horrifying crimes, was already quite unpleasant. However, it has become even more uncomfortable and unsettling following the real life revelation of film producer Harvey Weinstein's extensive history of sexual harassment. This is compounded by Weinstein's close friendship with the financier and sexual offender Jeffrey Epstein. Possible cut. Dreyfuss is based on Roman Polanski and his crime is mainly murder instead of sexual assault.
  • After all these years, having the game mock Call of Duty for Downloadable Content is hypocritical due to how focused on microtransactions GTA Online is. Possible keep, though the complaining could be toned down.
  • Though the Turismo name is a carryover from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Gran Turismo would be infamous for following GTA Online's microtransaction method of "purchasing in-game money for real money" for the sake of Fake Longevity in the seventh installment. Cut. The only thing the car and the game share is a name.
  • Trevor's antagonism towards Michael regarding his decision to move to Los Santos and become a wealthy family man in lieu of staying loyal to his friends becomes significantly more ironic and hypocritical after Grand Theft Auto Online would reveal that Trevor would eventually move to Vinewood and become a lifestyle coach, leaving Ron and his other Blaine County contacts behind. Possible keep.
  • The mission "Legal Trouble" became this when Warner Bros., under the helm of notorious new owner David Zaslav, cancelled several movies and shows for tax purposes, just as Devin Weston planned to do with the in-universe film Meltdown. Unsure. The pothole to Tyrant Takes the Helm could go since its about a real person.

    Hilarious
  • Trevor's insistence that he's not a hipster, when you realize that one of the DLC packs was called "I'm Not A Hipster." Even better, it has numerous additions to single player —- including very Hipster-ey clothing and car choices. Cut? The DLC was named after an in-game quote, so it was likely deliberate.
  • In December of 2013, a man was arrested for fighting off 15 police officers while high on meth and masturbating. Not only does this sound like something Trevor would do, the perpetrator looks like he could be Steven Ogg's twin brother. Possible cut. Not only does Trevor do neither at the same time, but the perpetrator doesn't really resemble him.
  • Now that the eight-gen versions of the game are out, this bit with Ricky, especially when you factor in how the seventh-gen versions just barely fit on the discsnote  and all the new features added in next-gen. It's enough to make you wonder if it wasn't cheeky Foreshadowing on Rockstar's part. Possible keep? Though it seems more like Self-Deprecation.
  • Trevor Phillips is frequently seen smoking and selling methamphetamine as part of his criminal enterprise that he runs from his home in the desert of Blaine County. Steven Ogg would go on to have a minor role in Better Call Saul, which is the prequel to a show all about making meth out in the desert. Bonus points in that Sobchak, Ogg's actor, has quite a lot in common with Trevor. Possible keep.
  • This fan-made trailer, released on August 30, 2013. What makes it this is that in the Next-Gen versions of the game, Midnight City is one the new songs added. Might be meta? If so, cut.
  • Trevor being introduced brutally beating a beloved GTA protagonist to death. In 2016, Steven Ogg, Trevor's actor, appeared in The Walking Dead as The Dragon to Negan, who makes a similarly grisly entrance. Even better, Simon eventually meets his end to Negan in the penultimate Season 8 episode by a beatdown and strangulation. Unsure.
  • There are several minor throw away jokes on the game's radio to "Combat Yoga" and "Darwinian Yoga", which take out the meditative aspects of yoga in favor of a more modern and aggressive approach. Now, fast forward to 2016... Possible keep.
  • Franklin's phone is said to be a Bittersweet device that looked like a Samsung Galaxy and running Drone OS, a parody of Blackberry and Android respectively. At the time the game was first released, Blackberry devices ran the proprietary Blackberry 10 OS with an Android Runtime tacked on, and there were rumors circulating of Samsung planning to buy Blackberry and use that branding for a line of business phones. Frame step to 2015, and not only did the buyout not happen, but Blackberry had also started making true Android Blackberry phones starting with the Priv, in a bid to Win Back the Crowd due to Blackberry 10 being perceived as lacking in desirable software and the Android runtime being dodgy and not fully compatible with all apps. Unsure.
  • The San Andreas gubernatorial race is between Democrat Sue Murry (a condescending, overly politically correct, "know-it-all shrew") and Republican Jock Cranley (a hateful, bigoted, dangerously ignorant, jerkass celebrity with no prior experience in politics), the candidates reflecting every negative stereotype of 2016 Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trumpthree years before the 2016 election. While Clinton being the Democratic nominee that year was seen by many pundits and political writers as a Foregone Conclusion even in 2013, Trump running for President came out of nowhere and surprised everybody. Cut. Not only is this possibly toeing the line of ROCEJ, but Cranley is based more on Arnold Schwarzenegger, not Trump.
  • On a similar note, the Republican Space Rangers episode included on the in-game TV, while intended as a parody of the contemporary Tea Party movement, was also incredibly prescient in anticipating Trump's appeal. The episode ends with the Space Marine Dick eating some bad chicken wings and taking a giant diarrhea dump on a model of the Capitol building at a right-wing rally, which gets mistaken for an Excrement Statement by a crowd that roars with approval, leading to a pair of shadowy alien financiers (transparently based on the real-life Charles and David Koch) choosing him as the vehicle through which to enact their hard-right agenda. Trump, of course, would campaign on overt scorn for the political establishment, comparing it to a swamp that needed to be drained, and while he never went so far as to literally defecate on the Capitol steps, he did gain notoriety for his flouting of political norms and his Controversy-Proof Image. Likely cut as this is more based on the Tea Party than the GOP.
  • The Republican Space Rangers became this themselves once the Trump administration proposed the idea of having a Space Force, a separate 6th branch of the armed forces to have control over military operations in outer space. Possible keep?
  • Samantha Muldoon's transparently commercial shift from being a socially aware pop singer to a down-home, flag-waving country singer, mainly to profit off of the older, conservative white demographic that still spends money on lucrative physical CDs as opposed to streaming, can be seen as this in light of Miley Cyrus' shift from raunchy, rap-influenced pop music on Bangerz to a more country-influenced pop-rock style on Younger Now. Said shift was widely criticized, with many interpreting Miley's comments about her Genre Shift as indicating that her Bangerz-era Hip-Hop influences, and her subsequent abandonment of them in favor of a country sound, were done for commercial reasons. Possible keep.
  • Seeing Steven Ogg advertise Old Spice products, considering that Trevor is notoriously unkempt. Unsure. Might be troping the actor.
  • During the Doomsday Heist missions, Avon Hertz offers to pay for the job in cryptocurrencies and Lester tells him to keep them because "cryptocurrencies are a bubble". Avon smugly replies "spoken like someone who got off too early", with Lester's tone implying that it is in fact the case. Less than two weeks after the Doomsday Heist's release, said bubble popped. Keep.
  • The look of the Insurgent Pick-Up Custom is impressive since Streit Group is marking the Python, a 4x4 armored vehicle that has the same looks as the Pick-Up. The Insurgent is based on a different car.
  • What was Trevor's name in the "Rush" casting call? Simon. Possible coincidence?
  • The Jester Classic emits a 4-cylinder exhaust note, even though the car it's based on, the fourth-gen Toyota Supra was only available with an inline-six engine. Skip forward to 2019 and the debut of the fifth-generation Supra, which shares not only shares a platform with the third-gen BMW Z4, but also its engine options, one of which is BMW's B48 engine, a turbocharged inline-4. This went further when the Tuners update dropped during the Summer of 2021, which saw the A90 Supra be introduced into the game as the Jester RR, as the car emits a 4-cylinder exhaust note as well. Possible keep.
  • Molly Schultz sharing a name with Molly McIntire, one of the main Historical Characters in the American Girl franchise, could be dismissed as a mere coincidence, but anyone who has read Spy On The Home Front would notice that Molly befriended a girl named Anna Schulz and her family, whose father Fritz worked at a garage in a town named Weston. Not to mention that both Mollys are brunettes and wear glasses, if that's any indication. Fan Myopia.
  • Pride Not Prejudice, the hardhitting, violent video game set in the Deep South, is a little humourous considering Rockstar's next game was Red Dead Redemption 2, a hardhitting, violent video game largely set in the Deep South. Possible keep, though RDR 2 is not a game about being a violent hillbilly.
  • Peter Dreyfuss (two "L"s), a legendary filmmaker of the New Hollywood era who brutally murdered a young starlet named Leonora Johnson as part of his "art", is a transparent parody of Roman Polański, a legendary filmmaker of the New Hollywood era who left the US for France after he was convicted of statutory rape and has since been accused of other cases of such. In 2019, Polański wrote and directed An Officer and a Spy, a film about the Dreyfus affair (one "L") in fin-de siècle France in which a Jewish officer in the French Army was falsely accused of espionage and treason, a story that struck many critics as Polański commenting on his own legal problems and allegations. Unsure.
  • The Beat Off headphones advertized in-game are a dig at Dr. Dre's range of Beats headphones. In December 2020, Dre himself makes a cameo appearance during the introductory mission for the Cayo Perico Heist and then plays a prominent role a year later in The Contract update. Likely coincidental as Dre's music appeared in game before that.
  • During the mission "Father/Son", Michael dryly tells Franklin to never have kids. Fast-forward to 2021 during Online's The Contract update and it looks like Franklin never took that advice to heart. Keep.
  • Lamar boosting gas tankers was a subject of mockery Franklin brought up early in the story... except that, in 2022, the Criminal Enterprises update revolved around a gas shortage and high gas prices; Looks like Lamar had the right idea, but just at the wrong time. Unsure what this entry's trying to say.

Is this entry on YMMV.Rick And Morty S 4 E 1 Edge Of Tomorty Rick Die Rickpeat iffy to anyone else? It kinda feels like it's taking a side on a contentious issue.

  • Harsher in Hindsight: Morty being put on trial for something he's obviously guilty for, getting off and then instantly winning over the court of public opinion by making noises with his throat may seem weird to watch after Morty's creator and voice actor was put on trial for domestic assault, had the case thrown out due to insufficient evidence but didn't so easily win over the court of public opinion.

Also, it may just be a stretch in general.

Is this removed Harsher in Hindsight entry from YMMV.The Lion King II Simbas Pride a proper example?

  • The scene where Simba stands poised to pass judgement on Kovu, while all the animals assembled taunt and jeer at him resembles Aslan's mockery at the Stone Table before the White Witch executes him in Edmund's place, with the exception that Kovu is not executed and Simba is not a bad guy, though he does come close to being a more morally ambiguous character. Seven years later, Disney would make their own adaptation of Narnia, which would show Aslan's execution in all its horror.

HilariousInHindsight.Danganronpa has this, which I think is a stretch (it feels like it's from 2020/2021 when the Internet tried to relate everything to Among Us):

  • The first person who dies is an imposter, which is treated as the start of the killing game. 6 years after the game's release, Among Us came out, where having an imposter dying first would mean that a "killing game" wouldn't happen in the first place.
YMMV.Danganronpa 2 Goodbye Despair includes this, which I would move to the series subpage if I thought it was valid; it just seems to be a vague similarity with an unrelated later work:

I removed this or something similar from YMMV.Shadow Generations, but then I saw it was added to YMMV.Metroid Dread too:

  • Raven Beak is on both ends of this trope, being an alien conqueror dressed in black who helped create an Ultimate Life Form by donating his DNA, intending to exploit said being later on as part of his plan of universal conquest. He's on "both ends" because he is very similar to Black Doom, a villain in the Sonic the Hedgehog series who debuted in 2005's Shadow the Hedgehog, and Black Doom would later make a comeback three years after Raven Beak's debut in Shadow Generations (a "side campaign" bundled with a remaster of Sonic Generations). What's more, Doom's plan in Shadow Generations involves awakening latent DNA in Shadow, just as Raven Beak wanted to awaken latent DNA in Samus. Perhaps Doom wanted to prove he did it first and wanted to do it better?

Fan Myopia, not hilarious. Can cut?

[up] I was thinking about adding a Harsher in Hindsight example regarding the Ukraine-Russia conflict for the Futurama episode "T.: The Terrestrial", where Earth President Richard Nixon filed a planetary embargo (i.e. ceasing all trade with the planet, including cultural exports) against Omicron Persei 8 for killing the headless clone of Spiro Agnew, which became really awkward for Russian viewers after the Western countries (such as the United States) started filing sanctions against Russia and many Western companies (which also included cultural exports) ceased operations there following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. However, I ultimately decided against adding it.

YMMV.The Mummy 1999

  • Harsher in Hindsight
    • Evy is kidnapped to be used as a sacrifice that will revive Anck-su-namun. The sequel reveals that Evy is a reincarnation of Anck-su-namun's stepdaughter and witnessed her murdering the Pharaoh - making this an even bigger insult on Imhotep's part. — Maybe? The sequel's plot doesn't exist when this movie's released, so perhaps this one's valid...
    • And in the sequel, when Anck-su-namun does get reincarnated, she ultimately leaves Imhotep to die, confirming that his sacrifices for her were All for Nothing. — Same as above
    • The untimely death of Mr. Henderson becomes somewhat harder to watch with the knowledge that his actor, Stephen Dunham, also died untimely in 2012. — Actor Mortality shoehorn, too easy to cut
  • Hilarious in Hindsight
    • Rick makes a crack about Imhotep "getting frisky with the Pharaoh's daughter" to Evy. Hilarious when you consider Rick himself gets frisky with Evy who is in fact the 3,000-year reincarnation of the Pharaoh's daughter Nefertiri. It is implied that Rick himself is a reincarnated Medjai. — Sounds like it's intentional on the filmaker's part - not really seeing the hindsight here
    • When Evy says "No harm has ever come from reading a book." Brendan Fraser plays Mo in Inkheart. — This one's fine, maybe
    • This film sparked Corey Johnson's (Mr. Daniels) career as a memorable supporting character in supernatural-themed films who is usually killed messily. Of note, he was Agent Clay in Hellboy, Henry Van Statten in Doctor Who and the Church Leader in Kingsman: The Secret Service. — Actor Trivia, more like Typecasting (which could be reworded and placed on the creator page) instead of hindsight
    • Jonathan ends up commanding Imhotep's mummified guards to kill his enemies, which is amusing to fans of Spartacus: Blood and Sand, in which John Hannah plays a gladiator owner. Speaking of which, Rick tries to impress on Evy the danger of their expedition by saying that his garrison marched out there without orders, "and all we found was sand and blood." Jonathan is standing right next to her when he says this, and his actor will come to know a thing or two about sand and blood. — Another actor trivia part, not sure but leaning to cut

YMMV.The Mummy Returns

  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • The Reveal that Evy is actually Nefertiri reincarnated, with a flashback of Rachel Weisz playing her in Ancient Egypt seems sadly prophetic of the controversy surrounding Exodus: Gods and Kings and Gods of Egypt regarding white actors playing Egyptian characters. While it's justified here (we can assume Nefertiri didn't really look like Evy and using Rachel Weisz is more convenient to tell the audience it's her past life) it's arguably more notable that this film did at least cast actual Middle-Eastern actors in the roles (save for Dwayne Johnson and Patricia Velasquez, who were at least brown-skinned). — Rachel wasn't even in the two later films, reeeeeeeeealllly stretching it here.
    • Evy bringing her son, Alex, on an expedition in Egypt at the beginning of the movie became this when Evy's actress, Rachel Weisz, refused to return for the third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, due to not wanting to travel to China after having just giving birth. — Not seeing the "harsher" aspect?
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Evy being killed and resurrected is amusing when you take into account how many films after this would have Rachel Weisz as a Posthumous Character - Constantine, The Constant Gardener and The Fountain. And then The Lovely Bones, where her daughter fills that role. — Not sure
    • Evy also brings her son along on the expedition at the start. It turns out Rachel Weisz wouldn't feel the same way, as the reason she didn't come back for the third film was not wanting to travel after having just given birth. — This is just a duplicate of an entry already in Harsher... above, the hindsight stuff literally argues with itself
    • Joe Dixon, playing Jacques, is devoured by Imhotep, who killed Pharaoh Seti. In the stage version of The Prince of Egypt, Dixon played Seti himself. — Maybe, another unsure

[up]In order:

  • Agree.
  • Agree.
  • Actor mortality that doesn't specify if the actor death was even remotely similar to the character death, beyond being "untimely".
  • "When you consider that..." implies either wrong-way hindsight, or Fridge Brilliance, not hindsight.
  • "X later plays Y in Z" is actor trivia, and the example also lacks context.
  • More actor trivia.
  • Even more actor trivia.
  • Misuse, kinda meta, and violates Examples Are Not Arguable.
  • Actor trivia and meta.
  • Actor trivia (again).
  • Contradicts a previous example, and is also meta/actor trivia.
  • Also actor trivia.
