And it strikes me that an image like this, on a page that's never had an image before, is something you can just put up without requiring two different processes 
What's going on on the picture? Donald is clinging from a pole, below him is water and a bunch of lanterns... I'm not familiar with the story so I don't know what is awesome about that scene.

Same. I have no idea what's going on in OP, or what makes it awesome.
After reading the page, it's apparently Donald climbing a lighthouse that had its light destroyed with a bunch of lanterns to save a ship from crashing into it. But you can't figure that out from the picture alone.

I think the suggestion in the thread had a suggestion caption that was something like "Did we mention that he's on top of a lighthouse?". If we pair it up with the image, it might help.
