We'll probably need a suggestion with a copyright year included. Otherwise, yeah, it just can't stand on its own.
she/her | TRS needs your help! | Contributor of Trope ReportI'll get something from a Flash game in 6 hours (on the phone ATM) or so as they're a gold mine of retraux, seeing as they release in 2000s or 2010s and may look like NES games.
Something like this or this, maybe?

Currently mostly inactive. An incremental game I tested: https://galaxy.click/play/176 (Gods of Incremental)Does the fact there's a videogame subpage matter?
(Annoyed grunt)Those don't look Retraux, just simplistic. There's a difference.
Here's a suggestion with years of release included:

The universe is under no obligation to make sense to us.
No it's not. The characters never canonically looked 8-bit, it's just the presentation. 5
PSA: a cat is not a dogI am not familiar with the work and can only judge from what I see. Also, isn't the evolution arc extraneous to the trope while taking up all the space? I'd rather see current paired with a timestamp of release.
I know there's a difference in Retraux and plain simplicity. I'd call a game like Pico's School (not actual suggestion) simplistic, but not Retraux.
I feel like a better pic of my suggestions would work well combined with a release date. If not, perhaps we could show a retro-style location with retro-style enemies (examples allow the whole game to be graphically advanced with retraux elements)? The contrast of high-quality cat and retro foes with additional stuff is probably a good way to show the trope (the game has a very high minimum resolution of 560p by the way).

Currently mostly inactive. An incremental game I tested: https://galaxy.click/play/176 (Gods of Incremental)I'd still like opinions on my pic, though. I'm not a fan of 5 as it overlaps with Art Evolution a bit too much for my taste, and Flash games can legitimately be retraux.
Currently mostly inactive. An incremental game I tested: https://galaxy.click/play/176 (Gods of Incremental)There's no Art Evolution though, since the art goes all the way back to the beginning. The opposite of evolution.
It's also not Zeerust Canon, since that's about actual elements in the work instead of artstyle.
It should be really simple: character (and associate games) look like something in the 80's, something else progressively more detailed in the 90's, and then intentionally goes back to the 80's look during the 00's.
Retraux is exactly that. Using an older artstyle in a modern work.

Original the Signature. Do not steal. But "going back to the beginning" is an irrelevant and potentially distracting element in an illustration of the trope.
Exactly. Going back to the beginning is not wholly necessary. I still feel like using a screenshot of an old-style game made in the 2000s with the release year under it or a pic of a modern game with retro elements (like retro enemies and background on my previous suggestion) is clear and simple, it only requires two elements.
Currently mostly inactive. An incremental game I tested: https://galaxy.click/play/176 (Gods of Incremental)Not really, since that would be Retraux Flashback.
Original the Signature. Do not steal. This is not a flashback as the characters enter an arcade game and fight in-game enemies that look this way in these backgrounds. That may be a different trope or just retraux.
And please tell your thoughts on just using a screenshots and a release date.
The only idea that doesn't fall under these two categories that I have left would be using something like No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle with a pic of its normal gameplay and its retro-styled minigames.
Currently mostly inactive. An incremental game I tested: https://galaxy.click/play/176 (Gods of Incremental)Well, your image doesn't show that context.
Plus, it would be a Nostalgia Level or close to it.

Original the Signature. Do not steal.I don't get it.
It's also a bit of a pain in the eyes with all the clutter.
Edited by Drope on Jan 9th 2020 at 8:42:05 AM
Original the Signature. Do not steal. It's probably trying to emulate the style of old comic books, but I agree that it's a bit hard to see it and old comics aren't that characteristically retro.
Anyway, I got a pic of how it looks like before entering the arcade (no good pic of actually showing the process of entering, but it shows the regular overworld and the machine). It's also not a Nostalgia Level as no previous game actually looked like this, it's just a retro-styled extra battle area (I hope I don't have to illustrate that).
And I am asking one more time because I am getting irritated that you are not answering even though it's probably a simple question and you have seen my posts otherwise: Would a pic with an old-style game screenshot and a release date be good?
Edited by Piterpicher on Jan 9th 2020 at 5:48:13 PM
Currently mostly inactive. An incremental game I tested: https://galaxy.click/play/176 (Gods of Incremental)I can't answer that since I don't know how the pic looks.
Give me an example.

Original the Signature. Do not steal.Well, it's more of a concept. It'd show a screenshot of a retro-styled game and a release date. Here's one idea (slightly fiddled with the coins' position to fit them in wikisize):

Currently mostly inactive. An incremental game I tested: https://galaxy.click/play/176 (Gods of Incremental)I think the current, with "8-Bit Fidelity Engine" and the NES style of the cover, works with the old caption "Now playing on a Wii, PS3 or Xbox 360 near you."

This is the box art to Mega Man 9. The game is an example, but nothing about this image nor its cover art shows that. It's just some action-y cover art.
