I was a bit surprised because I thought the fact that it predated Street Fighter II would have meant more, but there was also the fact that it was only the SNES version that was terrible. He didn't grade each version of Rise of the Robots individually, though he has done just that with other games, like Beast Wars: Transmetals. I guess he started doing that sometime after Rise, in situations that deserve it?

Until now!
Tattoo Assassins finally gets a chance to be in the ring.
Ah yes. Another one of the few titles on the list I have played on actual hardware. Yes, Bile Fascination was my reason to play the only known cab at Galloping Ghost.
Get taxed. Idiot.Ah yes, 90s: The Game. Where people lost their minds for gross-out content. Except in Earthbound where that hurt the game.
Is there any actual evidence that it hurt Earthbound? I always got the impression that Earthbound fans just couldn't accept that the general gaming public isn't that into their favourite game
It’s hard to prove a causal relationship there, but advertising that is not an accurate representation of the product usually doesn’t help.
Yeah, the marketing for Earthbound, at least in North America, hurt it by putting way too much focus in Toilet Humor and adult jokes it lacked, and tried to do a Self-Deprecation routine... which just made people not bother with a product that didn't seem proud of itself.
"That we continue to persist at all is a testament to our faith in one another."Yeah, the marketing for Earthbound, at least in North America, hurt it by putting way too much focus in Toilet Humor and adult jokes it lacked, and tried to do a Self-Deprecation routine... which just made people not bother with a product that didn't seem proud of itself.
...Okay, actually looking up reactions at the time, the ad campaign was considered weird and not great, but also RPGs weren't popular, no one liked the art style, it was viewed as having an Uncertain Audience, and the actual gameplay wasn't highly thought of either. So, a more traditional ad campaign might have helped, but I don't it would have been enough to make it any sort of success
I know you probably mean this as "RPGs hadn't hit their stride in the mainstream yet" and not "RPGs were outright unpopular," but enough of them had been successful prior to EarthBound that I feel like this wasn't much of a factor. The fact that it wasn't a typical fantasy RPG probably mattered more than it being an RPG in general.

Has Matt done Virtua Fighter 2? Not the beloved Arcade or Saturn versions, but the atrocious Genesis port that keeps getting rereleased in every Genesis compilation, presumably to bank on the name recognition of the property.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.On this video of The Worst Fighting Game, Street Fighter enters the ring once more, this time with the game that started it all.
I knew right away that, this wasn't going to score as bad as Human Killing Machine which is bad a copy of this.
Kind of curious how he'd score some really old/primitive stuff like Karate Champ or the game he briefly mentioned in this video, Urban Champion.
Actually, was Street Fighter the first game to use six buttons, half for punching, half for kicking, and each with three levels for light to heavy? Because that would be significant.

Amusing anecdote: the maligned pressure buttons that Matt keeps poking fun at would actually go on to inspire how Ryu controls in Super Smash Bros., with the long/short presses being used to incorporate light/medium attacks on a game that just has one button for normals. (Heavies would be treated as Smash Attacks, meanwhile.)
🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse AlberiaActually a couple of Ryu's held attacks in Smash are based on heavies:
- Held neutral (far) is based on standing heavy kick from SFII.
- Held up tilt is based on close standing heavy punch from SFIII.
Remember when Matt played Expect No Mercy
for Worst Fighting Game? Did you remember that it was a tie-in to a movie? Well, here's a review of the movie, Expect No Mercy.

Eventually he's going to hit a saturation point where a game just cannot be topped in how bad it is (probably Cat Fight). Then the "Worst Fighting Game" series just turns into "Wow These Suck!: Fighting Game Edition" series.
