Everyone was trying to chase that casual edgy teen market. Capcom threw away all their unique qualities because they were convinced Japanese-style games were out of fashion. And also thought horror was dead, so more punching boulders and shooting generic humans in generic daylight. As Matt said, there are many, many failures of Capcom in this period.
7th gen was the key period where “hardcore gamers” were very adamant of having games be “realistic” and “Mature” and that everything else was “casual kiddy trash”.
Keep in mind that most gamers didn’t care what a game’s aesthetic or tone was, but those people were way too vocal.
No, I never understood why people kept demanding that games be more realistic.
AAAAUUUUGGGHHHH!!!!Part of it is also that people have a hard time putting away childish things, like the fear of being seen as childish and the desire to be more "mature". Realistic graphics hits two birds with one stone, it makes things look more mature while also tossing out all those old childish things that people were embarrassed about.
Dour, drab, Real Is Brown graphics aren't even actually realistic. The real world is full of color.

Yeah, probably.
I mean, gameplay and controls are way more important than graphics. Like, there’s a reason people still play classics like Mario 3 or Sonic 3 today in addition to modern titles.
Note that I’m someone who is much more interested in older consoles than the PS 5 or Series X|S so graphical power appeals to me. There’s only two games across both that I’m interested in: Neptunia Re;Verse and Ratchet and Clank.
Another interesting little factoid is that games with realistic graphics tend to age worse in the graphical department than a game with a more stylized artstyle.

And to be honest here, that’s actually a very immature mindset to have. It’s a very high school-like mentality.
Incidentally, High School is when I grew out of that mentality. I was like what you said when I was in 7th grade and grew out of it in a year.

AAAAUUUUGGGHHHH!!!!And keep in mind that the most popular games on the planet are Minecraft and Fortnite.
So, that combined with the general dislike of TLOU 2, I think the pendulum is starting to swing away for gamers demanding realism.
AAAAUUUUGGGHHHH!!!!So anyone have any ideas for a Wha Happun that they'd want to see but actually like? I want to see a Wha Happun for The Urbz: Sims in The City. I don't feel guilty for liking it and still enjoy playing the game from time to time, but don't really like the constant Black Eyed Peas music and that very dated endorsement from them.
If I ever scrounge up 80 I feel I don't want to save I might ask for that on Wha Happun. It is the perfect slightly cringy but actually fun/funny thing from the 2000s IMO.
Oh yeah, that's a good one for a topic.

It ditched the goofy charm for f-bombs and blood and grey/brown color and the hero calling a woman a "bitch" a lot. And this was all before the internet uproared with mocking laughter over the Wife-Arm bit.
Yeah, sure it played decent... But at that point in time the 360 was awash in shooting games that played as good or better, all of which had the same drab aesthetic. Which, this video taught me, two of which where made by the same company WHAT THE HELL.
And yeah holy shit that Final Fantasy Fortress bit was complete BS on Square's part Grin clearly did NOT have a good lawyer team.

You are not alone.
