Spy × Family

A super spy named Twilight is given a mission on which world peace might depend: create a fake family and get their child in an elite school to infiltrate the circle of a VIP who rarely shows up. Twilight, aka "Loid Forger", adopts Anya (secretly a telepath child escaped from a lab) and marries Yor Briar (secrety a legendary contract killer). Hijinx ensue.

I caught up with all 19 chapters available in two days. A really damn fun ride so far, perfectly paced and often hilarious. I just wish we got more of Yor, as she seems to be the weakest link in the trio so far. I really want to know how the heck a blockhead like her ended up killing stuff for a living.

Although let's be real, Anya's the real star of the show.

The author really nails Anya's facial expressions, especially the one in chapter 19 when she was thinking about using her power to cheat.

Best ongoing series on mangaplus by quite a bit, imo. Love love love Anya and her goofy parents.

I get the sneaking suspicion that this thread will be relatively silent in between chapter releases, though that could just be me speaking. This is just because the series is...pretty comfy? Like, there is a clear endgame but as of now it has mostly been cute episodic chapters with the family inching closer to their goals and loving each other just a little bit more.

At the very least until we dig into big plot stuff it will be this way, imo.

Yeah… she's interesting thematically speaking with that whole commentary on gender roles and what a woman/wife "should" be, but unlike Loid and Anya she doesn't really have a clear goal beyond… keeping doing what she does.

There are some elements of conflict sprinkled here and there, notably with Yuri. And who knows when someone is gonna hire the Thorn Princess to take down Twilight (since she's Ostanian, it would be easy to sell her Twilight as a "bad guy")…

I have read only one chapter so far, but I will probably continue, this is so cute and funny.

Yor's kind of weird since she's Asian-coded while everyone else is like German or something. Plus you just have to wonder how someone as weird as her became a top assassin.

Loid is probably government-trained and backed, and is doing his job out of some sense of justice, but Yor was willing to kill people to provide for her brother. We know nothing about how she got into that kind of work, or why she was willing to do it, beside caring for her brother.

Huh, first time I've read this manga in Japanese. Interesting to see that Anya Starlight Anya speaks in all-hiragana. And that Yor calls her "Anya-san", which is weird…

Isn't Anya said that she can't read animal as well as human since their mind work difference from humans?

I think she can read/understand them to an extent? Didn't she talk to one of the cows before the Academy interview?

New chapter. Bomb dogs. Anna in danger. It end with a cliffhanger.

I must admit, I only realized that this setting is likely inspired by the FRG/GDR when this chapter called the minister of Westalis "Brantz". I mean there are many other storys with a similar setting, but this one really goes in on the parallels.

I must congratulate the mangaka to how he manages to gradually increase the cast with interesting characters. The dog will likely an interesting aspect to the dynamic between Anya and her "parents", and give her more ways to become active in protecting her "family".

A funny one though. Nice to give Scruffy some spotlight. And to see that Loid can forget about missions and stuff and just be there for a pal.

These dudes aren't innocent, but Yor probably won't kill anyone when Anya is around regardless.

Anya could run away to safety now with the dog allowing Yor to unleash literal hell on these guys.

Yeah if Anya wasn't around these dudes would be dead meat.
