Ryan Brady

Well, he wants to know what I think the most important part of investigating is...uhh, never really did that before...

Ryan knocked on his head a few times, trying to jog a thought up and get it moving. Then he finally got something, "Uhh...considering all the evidence before making a conclusion? Some of the smaller stuff can be like, surprisingly important."

Ryan looked around and swore that something was going on with Lucy. The poor girl seemed so shy, but even he could tell something was wrong beyond that. He'd need to try and help her out somehow.

The footballer felt his phone vibrate in his pocket, and reached a hand down, taking it out and rolling his eyes at the fact it was just a news thing. Isaac Noble announces new power grid and communications tech plans for mass release, incl. free smart phones / internet.

Well.

That was a thing.

Hector Finley Black Venzon

"Don't forget that profiling the suspects is very important. A systematic profiling of the suspects could reveal hidden motives or potentially reveal evidence that might determine the suspect's guilt or innocence. Especially when the means require knowledge and/or skills that the average person doesn't have. Motive, Means and Opportunity. These three are the most important things to find out when investigating a potential suspect."

Hector sat down, placed his staff on the floor next to his table and took down notes. The wizard felt his phone vibrate in his pocket, and reached into his coat pocket, taking it out. It was a newsflash.

Isaac Noble announces new power grid and communications tech plans for mass release, incl. free smart phones / internet.

Huh. Sounds fishy. If 18 years of being an amateur wizard detective have taught me anything, it's that people, especially rich and powerful people, doubly so people like Isaac Noble, don't just do things out of the goodness of their hearts. Something's up.

But what? What could he be planning? This had better not be a repeat of what happened with Hanshen Industries...

"Profiling's loaded as hell but you probably don't need me to tell you that." Gavin said. "Investigation's holistic. You start with what's observed, in its totality, and assume nothing. Profiling of suspected criminals, collecting and theorizing on motives, that's how you get Minority Report or, more realistically, the USAPATRIOT Act." He held up his camera and made a smarmy wink. "I mean, it's actually all about ethics in superhero journalism, if you think about it."

Inusuke

Inusuke had just signed {BE CALM QUIET LOOK LISTEN NOT LEAP STRAIGHT ENDING} to Professor Sherlock Holmes before something in his knapsack rang. He took out the phone, fumbled with it, and was briefly holding it upside down and trying to get the screen to switch to the right way.

After getting Google Translate to work right, he copy-pasted the news text into it: Isaac Noble announces new power grid and communications tech plans for mass release, incl. free smart phones / internet.

His eyebrows shot up. He might take advantage of this if it meant saving money for mother and father back home.

Investigations Class - Hold Up

"What do you mean, 'profiling'?" Ortrun evenly asked the new one. "How far do you want to take that?"
"How are you going to profile for motives? Does a small, dusky girl stab at a certain angle? Does a large rugby player only use explosives in his crimes?" She shook her head. "It reminds me of biases and wishful thinking. And trying to dream up a psych profile for criminals—and trying to decide on what pysch profile makes a criminal—asks for false positives, that is pursuing the innocent."

Cheryl - Investigations Class

Cheryl sat with her head propped up on her elbows, half asleep. This investigation thing was boring, and not what her powers were about, so why was she learning this again? Her phone vibrating in her pocket knocked her out of her stupor somewhat, sneakily taking it out and looking at the message.

Isaac Noble announces new power grid and communications tech plans for mass release, incl. free smart phones / internet.

Ah yeah, her brother was ambitious, and she loved him. But judging by the looks of everyone else, they seemed to range from surprised to suspicious. Cheryl simply rolled her eyes and put her phone away.

"When is this class going to end...?" She sighed to herself under her breath.

Ryan Brady

"Hey!" Ryan was not gonna stay quiet especially with the guy that had done that shit to him now advocating shit like profiling. Did he...did he seriously not know how that sounded? Singing the fucking praises of profiling? Well, at least this confirmed one thing for Ryan - it was never just one thing with creepers like him. Of course he'd be all for profiling.

"Profiling is absolute BS. It leads right into racial profiling, and encourages people who do it to look at people and prejudge." Like hell he was gonna keep quiet about this. "Racist pieces of shit get my fist in their grill. That's how Ryan Brady rolls."

"I admit I didn't choose my words well. I just meant that looking into the suspect's background and who he knows might turn up useful evidence and you can deduce a lot about the perp from evidence like the means of the crime or items left at the scene. How organised the scene is, for example. You can tell whether this was a crime of passion or done in cold blood from that. If it's very well organized, you're looking at a methodical perp, one who might have committed multiple similar crimes. If not, it's a crime of passion. Hell, even talking to people close to the suspect or even the suspect himself can reveal a lot."

Investigations Class - Hard on Soft Science

Ortrun shook her head, folding one arm, the other raised and open. "One may find 'dirt' on anyone when she intrudes into their background and looks while having already decided that this was their guy. Suddenly everything can look like a clue. I would not be comfortable basing invasions of people's lives based upon a guess upon the nature of the person that we're looking for."
The point is, both of those sound like they aggravate wishful thinking and tunnel vision. Respectfully, Mr...." She trailed off. Right, never learned the name. "Sorry."
She tilted her head. "And examining the scene for physical items left behind seems like well physical evidence not the other thing. And for being tidy, that could be the guy or the steps he needed to go through to break that lock. And 30 other thieves could have figured out the pattern."
Ortrun knew little of psychology. She knew it and couldn't really hide it. But observation of tangible, physical things got her through the days. Though, she would hear how he defended forensic psychology. It did occur to her that she was stepping on the teacher's toes but this was class. And if she needed an excuse then there was learning and information exchange going on!

Marcel - Investigations

'It's nothing' Marcel mouthed back to Lucy as the lesson began. The professor asked for insights from the class, and predictably got a hodge-podge of vaguely coherent answers. Rolling his eyes, he pressed his voicebox to his throat.

"Psychology and history can tie into motive. Someone with a history of violence is obviously a more likely to commit a crime of passion than someone without. But as Médecin Nerveuse says, that evidence is only circumstantial at best; a means to find leads, not evidence for conviction in and of itself." Marcel said. "Though the first step to investigation, I would think, is not to seek suspects but simply to ascertain the basic facts of the case."

What is so amusing about this? Why do you take lives? How can you forget?

As all this was going on, Gavin was doing some furious googling on his phone. He had a half-baked recollection of the quote he was thinking of but it was eluding him as the conversation went on past him, until he found it!

"Samuel Vimes dreamed about Clues. He had a jaundiced view of Clues." Gavin began, reciting it off Goodreads, "He instinctively distrusted them. They got in the way. And he distrusted the kind of person who’d take one look at another man and say in a lordly voice to his companion, 'Ah, my dear sir, I can tell you nothing except that he is a left-handed stonemason who has spent some years in the merchant navy and has recently fallen on hard times,' and then unroll a lot of supercilious commentary about calluses and stance and the state of a man’s boots, when exactly the same comments could apply to a man who was wearing his old clothes because he’d been doing a spot of home bricklaying for a new barbecue pit, and had been tattooed once when he was drunk and seventeen* and in fact got seasick on a wet pavement. What arrogance! What an insult to the rich and chaotic variety of the human experience!" He punctuated with a little point of his index finger. "That's from Feet of Clay by Terry Pratchett."

Sue blinked after Gavin finished his quote. At first she thought he was talking to himself. Wouldn't be the first time someone started going on a self-directed tangent, often out of a sudden onset of insanity. But then he said it was from someone else or whatever, and that really threw her off.

"Okay, not to sound like an idiot or anything because you probably knew what that is and who the hell you're talking about and I'm sure he's really important even if he shouldn't be because everyone says that William Shakespeare was important even though he just seems like some fucker who didn't know whether we should or shouldn't be, but I guess what I'm asking is what's a Terry Pratchet and why should I care?"

Investigations Class – Lucy Livingston

“He's... a famous novelist...” Lucy said quietly to Sue, brow furrowed a little as she mulled over the whole situation. “Supposed to be really good; I don't know, David's the one who reads them... but y-yeah, he's right. You can't just... look somebody up and expect to find all the answers to your questions. It's cruel. And wrong. But um... yeah. That wouldn't be how I'd do it anyway... I'm usually out in the air, figuring it out...”

Not good with computer stuff. That profiling thing aside... even stuff like forensics I'm kinda crap at. Maybe I need this class more than I thought I would. David can't be my voice-in-the-ear forever...

Her thoughts paused a moment as she frowned a little deeper, willing a small tendril of ink to sprout out of her palm and looking at it contemplatively.

Although... maybe this could come in handy...

Invasive. You know that.

No, only for... for dire circumstances.

She sighed a little, reabsorbing the ink and again looking ahead. Looking at the teacher. Suddenly her gaze seemed to harden, and she stared at him intensely. With her lowered brow her flat grey eyes suddenly became intimidating, and she seemed to be looking right through him. She was testing him. Seeing what he could see from her.

And maybe then, she could approach the detective later, and see if he was all he was cracked up to be. If not, she'd been doing a much better job than she'd previously thought.

For now, the gaze dropped just as quickly as it appeared, and no signs of any ill will (or indeed any acknowledgement of what had just transpired) were present on her face.

A novelist? Well, not that she'd know. She didn't know that much about novels. Still, if the nice ink lady's brother read them, then maybe they were worth something after all.

...

Read them.

Read them.

Sue's eyes widened as her fur suddenly bristled, her mind nearly going blank. She had a vague concept of the notion of reading. As far as she knew, it involved looking at a bunch of symbols and images and associating them to different words and concepts, stringing them together to create coherent sentences. Maybe a bit complex, but she at least grasped the basic idea, if only because her handlers had made sure she had some knowledge of the concept.

The problem was she still had no idea how to do it.

To her, 'A' was a triangle with a line in the middle, and 'apple' was little more than a bunch of scribbles, at least as written. She still had no idea what any of it meant, nor did she care to. She had overheard her handlers discuss getting her a tutor, but so far they hadn't found anyone willing to take on 'an overgrown monkey from the boonies'. Her only hope was that as long as she was here, she could just stumble her way through and wouldn't have to worry about understanding the alphabet. Or whatever made up the written language.

Fat chance of that.

As such, the fearless monkey girl usually filled to the brim with an overabundance of confidence was frozen like a deer in headlights. In anything involving her fists, she excelled. But this was something altogether new. She didn't know a lot of things about the world outside her jungle, but she was confident she could learn most everything in time. This? Not so much. And what made it worse was that everyone else in the room could do it with their hands tied behind their backs.

It was actually somewhat embarrassing. In the jungle, she had faced down evil spirits, large hairy apes set on conquering her territory, and only the Jade Emporer knew what else. But somehow, this was scarier than all of that put together. She knew how to fight. Hell, she knew how to do it better than anyone. And yet, even though everyone else here could surely do it, she never learned how. And wasn't sure if she ever could.

For the first time since she was a kid, she was completely and absolutely terrified.

Some hero she was.

"Eh, I read like 3 of his books," Gavin shrugged, and eyed Sue, freezing up. He was finding it a little difficult to clock what exactly was going on with her, though he had some ideas. He didn't want to assume she was some sort of jungle savage but, well, guess so. Plenty of people assumed he had some sort of psychic stuff instead of his brutish invulnerability powers.

"Sue, stay with us here." Gav actually did reach down and stop recording. He was a voyeur, but not that kind. "I just figured I'd bring it up. Rest the man's soul, you know, he was real influential, especially from a writer like me."

Oh goodie. Writing. The other thing she couldn't do. Just had to bring that up, didn't he?

Of course, the best thing to do was just to shrug it off and pretend it never happened. Hell, one of her classmates was already getting concerned and he didn't even know what got her so worked up!

Or did he?

Okay, bad Sue. This wasn't like her. She was confident! Sure of herself! She could do anything! All she needed to do was act like it.

"Uh, hey, don't worry! I'm A-okay! It's not like I don't know anything about writing because I totally do! Like, I know all about Theo Holstoy and Jerry Token and the rest of them and I've totally read them backwards and forwards because I am completely one hundred percent illiterate and that's a fact!"

...

"LITERATE. I MEANT LITERATE. TOTALLY."

By the Jade Emperor was she losing it.

Investigations Class - Wow

Ortrun did not stare at Sue after her... statement. She took pains not to look Sue, Ryan, or Lucy in the eye actually. One of them might take it as a challenge or something.
And Ortrun might have actually believed or at least gone with that correction. What? She spoke like that all the time. And was not proud of it. 'Theo Holstoy' and 'Jerry Token' could've been British authors that she'd never heard of. And...
...
...
Okay, Ortrun had gotten past denial and shock quite a bit before she finished staring at the wall by Sue. No, she had to figure out how to say the words without setting off her aggression. or Ryan's. Or Inusuke's. And try to unsee a few visions of one or all of them tossing her around like a ragdoll. Shaking her head did not do a thing to clear them.
"..." Ortrun sucked in a breath, hands on her shoulders, ready to quickly shield her head. "That's...um... you don't..." Another breath. "We..." She couldn't commit the class. "I... can help with that." She said to Sue, forcing her voice to stay level so the statement did not sound like a question.

"HELP?! HELP WITH WHAT?!" Sue forced a brave and desperate smile on her face as she let out a strained giggle of laughter, but it quickly collapsed into a groaning sigh. Despite her best efforts, she wasn't convincing anyone. But if she was willing to help...

She hopped over to Ortrun, rolling her eyes before making sure no-one was listening in. She spoke in hushed whispers, or at least as hushed as she could get. Of course, by this point, half the class probably had some idea of her predicament. But she sure as hell wouldn't admit it.

"Okay, this stays between us, alright? It's just, I never had to learn this stuff, ya know? Not that we didn't have stories or anything, but it was done with words. Passed down from one monkey to the next. And that was good enough for us. Except now I'm supposed to put all these different symbols together and expect them to mean something! The fuck am I supposed to do that?! Like, is it too much to ask that everyone just says what they wanna say instead of converting it to moonspeak?!"

"With the..." Ortrun trailed off watching Sue laugh. She only had a brief moment to think this was a joke at her expense before just what? Followed by Oh, Crap! when Sue came up close and personal. My, she's alot larger up close.

Ortrun just nodded along all too quickly to Sue speaking, keeping her eyes averted. Only after did she process what Sue was saying. "Well, written words store information, like stories, conveniently." Somehow that sounded grander when they said it on Extra History. "And it becomes second nature after a time."

And I wish I could say the technique of writing made perfect sense but English is the worst language to come out of this continent. Ortrun did not comment on the stays 'between us' thing, given the circumstances and how she did not want to outright say to Sue's face that that was unlikely.

"In the meantime, you can learn a bit at a time. Programs will let you dictate papers for assignments until you get the hang of writing and typing I suppose.

"No, the kind on a computer, like on a phone." Ortrun tried to respond to that. "And Brick Houston layeth the smackdown when he gets a steel chair, but that's beside the point."
She carefully wiped cloth over her tablet before turning it to face Sue. "Tablets do it to. The words I just said are here." Ortrun traced them with a stylus somewhat pointlessly she realized after a moment. "That won't mean much now but after the first day when they start giving assignments you can say your answer to a program—on a computer—and turn it in that way. Speech to text. It ...sometimes works without... too many... really bad problem."

"Bestie? I think that might be oxyt—" Ortrun had time to roll her head every which way, watching Sue start to squeeze her. She didn't quite have the reaction time to dodge.

"Thanks I..." Don't know what to say to that. "Hope you have good health. Healthy. Hope you stay in good health." She had to recalculate that one in her head. They meant the same thing. But if a phrasing could be considered insulting she didn't have room to run.
