A God Am I has several examples that says a character desires to become a god. According to the trope's description, A God Am I is about either delusions of godhood or having a God Complex. God Complex redirects to A God Am I, so both terms are interchangeable.

Here are some of the examples I feel are misuse:

  • Brutaka himself aspired to reach this during his Crisis of Faith, intending to obtain the Mask of Life and use its power to become a god after he believed Mata Nui had died or abandoned the universe. Luckily, Axonn defeated him, and eventually he had a change of heart and went back to the good guy's side.
  • Karsus, an archmage of ancient Netheril, probably came the closest to being a god without actually ascending. He created the spell Karsus' Avatar, which in in-game terms would be level 12, meant to allow one to merge with a god for a short time, intending to use it to save his doomed homeland. It failed spectacularly. When merged with Karsus, Mystryl, goddess of magic, lost control, and magic went haywire. She had to sacrifice herself to separate from Karsus, causing magic to momentarily cease. Netheril, a civilization built on magic, did not survive. Particularly tragic, is that Karsus survived for a short moment, and was able to see his beloved homeland crumble to dust because of his folly. TL:DR: He fucked up big time.
  • Yu-Gi-Oh! GX gives use several. Kagemaru wishes to harness the power of the Mythic Demons/Sacred Beasts to "become the God of the world" and restore his youth. Saiou, possessed by an Eldritch Abomination, wished to cleanse the world and remake it in "the image of light." Yubel wanted to fuse all twelve dimensions into one, and rule over them with Judai. Amon Garam wants to become the god of the alternate dimensions. Duelist of the week Frantz, who dueled using a copy of the Winged Dragon of Ra, merged with Ra using its special ability.

Those are only three out of many examples that have the character(s) wanting to become gods instead of deluding themselves into thinking they are.

Sorry for the delay, ~The Nerf Guy.

Unfortunately, we have to decline this as a) we have a huge backlog, and b) three examples of misuse is not enough. We'll need a lot more samples.
