From YMMV.College Humor.

  • Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy: While many of their sketches can be hilariously dark, there are some sketches that are too mean-spirited. Case in point is the Boy from The Giving Tree parody, while he devolved into a selfish Jerkass that framed the Tree for mass-murder. Special mention goes to "X-Box Girls Strike Back". Though the original "X-Box Girls Get Revenge" was a clear Take That! to chauvinistic gamers who sexually harass women online, "X-Box Girls Strike Back" is just two minutes of a timid nerd being threatened with rape and sexual torture until he vomits all over himself and breaks down sobbing while his tormenters laugh at him. Apparently, that's meant to be funny.

Don't really follow those guys but this reads like someone having a Dude, Not Funny! moment. Not sure "apathy" works if it triggers that kinda reaction.

And there's no evidence there of a widespread negative reaction.

So Bleak, It's Boring up up. Does it require the evidence of apathy thing we decided DIAA?

When replacing DIAA examples, should examples that don't cite evidence be zapped?

YMMV.Oops Im Equine Again

  • Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy: Several readers weren't really pleased with the rapidly-esclating, more serious plotlines in what was initially an amusing story about Sunset suddenly becoming a pony again. Randomly killing off the human counterparts of Night Glider and Party Favor as a result of the Windigoes (off-screen no less, when they otherwise hadn't even appeared in the story at all) didn't really help either.

The fic has 1,942 likes vs 106 dislikes and a quick glance through the comments shows no dislike or backlash. It doesn't sound like the complaints are about it being "boring" now so misuse under the new trope. I will cut unless I hear any objections.

WebAnimation.Zero Punctuation has these two:

  • A big irk for Yahtzee is games where protagonists are just as (if not more) unlikable than the antagonist, citing WET, Kane & Lynch: Dog Days and the God of War sequels as major examples.
  • He also stated that he found Max Payne's constant self-loathing and pessimism in Max Payne 3 to be tiring and off-putting.

I'm not sure if they're Lampshaded, discussed in universe, or just outright misuse. (I suppose we could claim that in this context Yahtzee qualifies as an audience)

The first one is a general example and the second has insufficient context.

Edit: DIAA is an audience reaction and reviewers have reactions to works that are objective examples for those reviewers. That said, DIAA is also supposed to be about broad audience reactions, not the reactions of specific individuals no matter how influential they are.

I was PM'd asking if we are at the point where we should start large-scale removal of DIAA not that it was renamed. Are we?

YMMV.Belladonna Of Sadness

  • Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy: The baron is a despicable rapist who ends up as an absolute Karma Houdini (unless you count The French Revolution being a thing), the Devil is also a rapist who corrupts Jeanne into selling her soul to him, Jeanne herself is relentlessly victimized throughout the entire film, and Jean is a Dirty Coward who ultimately ends up working for the Baron in setting his own wife, Jeanne, up to be killed.

The work in question was Creator Killer that was Vindicated by History. Angst Aversion sounds like the more appropriate trope as: 1. Once audiences actually saw it it became more popular. 2. DIAA is complaining about the happenings as opposed to the overall hopeless tone leaving no chance of a good ending.

Taking care of the subpages. Anything in the quotes page that can be transferred over?

Is Mother 3 really a case of this? The game is full of sad and dark stuff, sure, but it's still loved by many despite that, and people clearly care about it. It's listed on the Video Game subpage for this and on the game's YMMV page

Considering how beloved that game is, I don't think so. It probably fits more under Angst Aversion if people avoid because of how dark and tragic the game can get.

Is there cases for works where what would be the audience apathy is the point (I'm an old timer I still remember the old name) or considered the draw of the work? I'm not sure True Art Is Angsty (aka we need downer endings) or Angst Aversion (the angst scares away the faint hearted) completely captures that edge case. IE everything sucks, may as well give up on the heroes if any, but somehow that's the good part. Maybe one of those tropes can have an expanded description for dealing with a work whose complete bleakness works in its favour?

[up] I was thinking about that the other day but couldn't figure out how to phrase it.

(Sidenote, since this is a trope proposition I thought I was still in the sounding board for a moment)

[up][up] Just from looking at the True Art Is Angsty page description, I'm not sure why that wouldn't count for something that's dark but still appealing. The name implies a bunch of assumptions that might not fit a particular work (i.e. that the creators think dark=good), but the description seems more neutral than that.

[up] Because True Art Is Angsty is In Universe Examples Only so it can't be used to describe how a real life audience perceives a work. (No idea why it's still YMMV in that case, though.)

[up][up]I think it's because entries on YMMV pages still reference out of universe stuff. In that case, I bring up 1984's current True Art Is Angsty entry: "The book is considered one of the greatest ever written, and it's one of the most depressing ones you'll ever read." Yeah in lieu of Too Bleak, Stopped Caring I think this entry could be... longer? More elaborate?

From Pulsaciones:

  • Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy: It's really hard to feel sorry for Álex when he suffers his heart attack in the first episode. At that point, we've mostly seen him doing drugs and acting like a jerkass towards his peers.

This reads more like an Unintentionally Unsympathetic entry, especially since it only focuses on one character.

[up]It could be, but the main page trope list also lists him as Dr. Jerk, so I question whether we are supposed to find him sympathetic in the first place.

If you are familiar with the work, be aware that the page is not properly crosswicked... (If you aren't up to doing that yourself, maybe add it to Pages Needing Wicks...)
