US Politics - Impeachment Proceedings

Go To

This thread is intended for a civil, focused discussion on the various impeachment proceedings of President Trump and others in the administration.

Keep in mind that this is a narrowly focused thread, created to more closely manage this topic of discussion. The pros and cons of said impeachment were soft-banned in the General US Politics thread for a few months, due to incessant arguing. However, there is a high desire to discuss said events and it is of such high prominence that we are willing to give this devoted thread a try.'

Things to keep in mind:

  • This is about impeachment, votes on, investigations on, inquiries in, articles on, etc. Other American political discussions should go into the General Politics thread.
  • Standard rules apply. Civility and appropriate forum conduct are paramount.
  • Circular arguments about pros/cons are what got the topic banned in the first place. If we feel it's going circular, we will intervene. Multiple intercessions will not be looked on kindly.
  • As for that intervention, mods will be monitoring and moderating this thread more closely due to the nature of the topic, and its history in the General Politics thread. We will warn and thump in an effort to keep this thread on-topic and civil, but we are more than willing to lock it if people aren't willing to course-correct.

This thread doesn't have to be a case of Why Fandom Can't Have Nice Things, but it will be, if necessary.

I don't think the GOP's opinion of Trump will help. 75% of Americans wanted witnesses.

I also believe impeachment severely killed a lot of Trump's enthusiastic base.

His godhood status has been removed among them if Kentucky is any indication.

[up][up] Hoping?

I just stated a conclusion based on what we have seen from him so far and the most likely outcome without anyone interfering into it. (unless he's planning to use his sons as "donors" to prolong his life but I don't even want to imagine Trump being that morbid...)

And "hoping"?

No.

That would indicate that the power of "thoughts and prayers" actually works in this reality.

...

Voluntary work, you said?

Like what?

(and what would one do if attacked by drunk MAGAS while doing it?)

[up] Volunteer for a democratic candidate’s campaign. Your chance of being attacked is basically zero, but if you’re really worried for some crazy reason you can always text or phone bank from the safety of your own house.

Also, wishing death on people for whatever reason is against forum rules.

[up] But I didn't do that! (the life-expectancy calculation is nothing of that sort)

It was just an basic estimate!

Like calculating how long a car will run based on the mile-counter numbers.

No ill-will there!

I think it prudent in this situation to to remember the wise words of Lewis Black:

[up][up] Hey! I didn't started it!

...

That aside.

now when we know that impeachment has lost its power as a deterrent in the White House, thanks to the leniency of the GOP, and only adds and asterisk to the impeached one's name without further consequences, what exactly is there left to reel Trump as President back in anymore or from committing further illegal and unlawful acts as the year advances?

How has it lost its power? It's arguably more effective than it ever was before because its done an enormous amount of damage to Trump's credibility, position, and power.

There was never a chance to remove Trump but it has destroyed his reputation.

[up][up] Think of it from this angle.

Trump feared impeachment and tried to avoid it at all costs in order to "keep his image clean"

He failed.

Now he is stained and impeached forever.

However, now when his reputation has been stained and he has suffered what he tried to avoid.

What exactly is stopping him from "ripping off all brakes" and go full-steam ahead on his crazy train when he (in his mind) has already suffered the worst that could have happened to him?

He still got to end of his year with his first term.

And now his leash has snapped in two...

[up]Congress. Despite many Republican congresscritters putting on a show of absolute fealty (and more still who aren't acting), they will try to pump the brakes of one of Trump's whims if it looks like they'll get caught in the crossfire.

Probably because nothing prevents the Democrats from going after his enablers now and continuing the news cycle to undermine him. Trump can't NOT focus on attacks on himself because of his ego.

I say keep the pressure up.

If not impeachment 2.0, Electric Boogaloo then going after his enablers and cronies.

(Chuckles)

You know, some days, I just wonder if Donald Trump is actually a rare case of a Real Life Mad Oracle

Everything he has projected upon and predicted about others have come true...when applied to himself.

Including the "NOTHING BUT INVESTIGATIONS" claim he made about Clinton.

What exactly is stopping him from "ripping off all brakes" and go full-steam ahead on his crazy train when he (in his mind) has already suffered the worst that could have happened to him?

The same things that have been stopping him for the past 4 years? The other parts of the government?

People act like Trump could just suddenly declare himself king one day and it would actually work. Democrats have a lot of power in Congress and even the bureaucracy he runs has been resisting him since basically day one.

Lest anyone forget, he's a coward whose sabre-rattling is always hot air with no actual intention to start a war, and is a colossal idiot who refuses to acknowledge his ignorance. If he ever starts a war, it will almost certainly be on pure accident.

He certainly intended with Solemani.

I don’t think you can really ascribe any particular motivation to something like that. I doubt he intended to start a war. In fact, I doubt he intended to do anything. He picked an option off a list presented to him that he thought sounded the coolest and toughest in that moment.

The Iranians have a basic self-preservation instinct and decided one guy wasn’t worth being bombed flat over.

I thank God every day that Trump knows when to back down from war. It took a series of missile strikes on a US base for him and everyone else in the world to realize that Iran is not fucking around.

So, contrary to what a lot of us were expecting, the impeachment actually seems to have caused an uptick in Trump's approval. It's gone up from 52% to 54% on FiveThirtyEight. What are we to make of that?

[up] That "polls are worthless"? (The majority of the american population wanted witnesses to the impeachment trial in the senate, the GOP backhanded them in response and denied all of that. Showing that majority opinion carries little weight as a poll anymore.)

All that matter is the final vote in November.

[up][up][up]Those are his disapproval numbers. Trump has been remarkably consistent, polling at disapproval in the low 50s and approval in the low 40s since basically the start of his presidency.

Currently watching the live broadcast today.

The democrats are on point, as usual, passionate, professional and prepared with the truth.

Break

Then comes the GOP...and Ken Starr.

And oh boy... (I'm not a violent person, I don't encourage violent acts against others easily or when pushed to the edge) but Ken Starr's "argument"(Aka "bold-faced lies" that's wrong in every single way)

...it's enough to make my blood boil in pure, undiluted, rage against him, and the side of the GOP.
