US Politics - Impeachment Proceedings

Go To

This thread is intended for a civil, focused discussion on the various impeachment proceedings of President Trump and others in the administration.

Keep in mind that this is a narrowly focused thread, created to more closely manage this topic of discussion. The pros and cons of said impeachment were soft-banned in the General US Politics thread for a few months, due to incessant arguing. However, there is a high desire to discuss said events and it is of such high prominence that we are willing to give this devoted thread a try.'

Things to keep in mind:

  • This is about impeachment, votes on, investigations on, inquiries in, articles on, etc. Other American political discussions should go into the General Politics thread.
  • Standard rules apply. Civility and appropriate forum conduct are paramount.
  • Circular arguments about pros/cons are what got the topic banned in the first place. If we feel it's going circular, we will intervene. Multiple intercessions will not be looked on kindly.
  • As for that intervention, mods will be monitoring and moderating this thread more closely due to the nature of the topic, and its history in the General Politics thread. We will warn and thump in an effort to keep this thread on-topic and civil, but we are more than willing to lock it if people aren't willing to course-correct.

This thread doesn't have to be a case of Why Fandom Can't Have Nice Things, but it will be, if necessary.

Center for Reponsive Politics through Salon: Trump's impeachment defense team have each personally donated money to Republican Senators within the past few years.

[up] Aka "Trump is bribing the jury with cash in order to tilt their votes in his favor".

The corruption within this administration is so blatant and cartoonishly cliche that it's not even worth a mocking chuckle.

Seriously.

The entire defense team should be arrested on the spot for bribery and jury tampering to say the least.

Not unless you can prove a quid pro quo. If there was a criminal conflict of interest statute you could try, but Speech and Debate Clause...

Watching...

The arguments coming from the GOP are just outright pathetic.

And the Democrats are utterly destroying them by turning Trump's legal team's own words against them.

It has become painfully obvious that the GOP are just Trump's human sacrifices at this point, with no interest in upholding law, order, the constitution or serve the american people.

All of them are basically just trying to protect one man...by attacking the country that elected them in the first place.

I hope they all get voted out as fast as possible.

In a sane world, the extreme measures being taken to prevent this information from being released would be all the evidence you need to corroborate it.

In fairness, the letter alleges that Top Secret information is contained in the manuscript - that said, it's not publicly known what is being objected to, but that's the official excuse.

I don't buy said excuse for one minute, but it's enough of a veneer of an excuse that others could reasonably give it a pass.

Yes, the "national security" excuse. Nevermind that Trump himself allegedly jeopardized national security with this scheme.

So much for Mitch not having the votes to block witnesses. Looks like they're gonna get away with it after all:

Well, we'll find out Friday, but Bolton publicizing it has done the job that the Democrats needed as has Parnas. The public is made aware there are witnesses and probably more so than would have been in the Senate chamber anyway.

“Every public official I know believes that his election is in the public interest,” said Alan M. Dershowitz, a defense lawyer for the president.

This is the stupidest defence ever. "People totally believe that this president being reelected is in the public interest therefore anything that would damage those chances should not be allowed to be seen". Uh... this is a democracy.

[up]x2 I find that interesting. I guess unless Republicans actually allow witnesses to be called, there's no reason to bring him up, and he's still protected by the Whistleblower Act.

A few quick headlines catching my eye at https://currentstatus.io/

In contrast with Trump legal team, Justice Department lawyer says House can impeach over defied subpoenas – A Justice Department lawyer said Thursday in federal court that the House can impeach a president over ignored subpoenas, a noted contrast to what lawyers for President Donald Trump are arguing at his Senate impeachment trial this week.
