US Politics - Impeachment Proceedings

Go To

This thread is intended for a civil, focused discussion on the various impeachment proceedings of President Trump and others in the administration.

Keep in mind that this is a narrowly focused thread, created to more closely manage this topic of discussion. The pros and cons of said impeachment were soft-banned in the General US Politics thread for a few months, due to incessant arguing. However, there is a high desire to discuss said events and it is of such high prominence that we are willing to give this devoted thread a try.'

Things to keep in mind:

  • This is about impeachment, votes on, investigations on, inquiries in, articles on, etc. Other American political discussions should go into the General Politics thread.
  • Standard rules apply. Civility and appropriate forum conduct are paramount.
  • Circular arguments about pros/cons are what got the topic banned in the first place. If we feel it's going circular, we will intervene. Multiple intercessions will not be looked on kindly.
  • As for that intervention, mods will be monitoring and moderating this thread more closely due to the nature of the topic, and its history in the General Politics thread. We will warn and thump in an effort to keep this thread on-topic and civil, but we are more than willing to lock it if people aren't willing to course-correct.

This thread doesn't have to be a case of Why Fandom Can't Have Nice Things, but it will be, if necessary.

Sounds like I've missed less than nothing in not watching the trials.

Biggie Smalls was quoted among other impassioned testimony.

Romney claimed that unnamed Republican Senators are willing to call Bolton to testify.

I'll believe that when it happens.

I'm sorry, "calm" Bolton?

[down]I figured it was 50% chance of that, 50% chance the word has some additional meaning in legalize that I'm not familiar with.

I'd pay to see legislative sessions where everyone involved is stoned. Things would probably be more civil, if nothing else.

Listening to Ken Starr’s opening argument, it works better as a criticism of the Clinton Impeachment than a defense of Trump. It’s real fucking rich coming from him.

Listened to more some of it on the radio. One of the lawyers argued that the narrative that the intent of Trump's phone call being personal gain made no sense because so many people were on the call with him. Allegedly, many of them were in on it (and Bolton confirmed as such). So what's your point?

Schumer and Angus King are cautiously optimistic about getting witnesses now, based on what Republican senators have been doing/saying in their presence.

And the Republicans are ticked off at Trump because the White House had Bolton's manuscript since December and never bothered to tell the rest of the Republicans what it said about Trump trying to extort Ukraine.

I wonder if the Republicans are more upset about the obviousness of the corruption or the fact that it makes them look like morons.

The latter.

Trump just put a hole in their reelection boats without warning them.

I've had some friends wonder if the news about Bolton's book was leaked to give the Republicans in the Senate SOME advance warning about the books existance before they vote. Since if these revelations came out AFTERWARDS it could have been worse since the chances are low that anybody would believe "Oh I didn't KNOW" after the fact and among all the attempts to restrict evidence or prevent witnesses.

I could see a plausible deniability factor in all this. They're was a Washington Post article, or maybe Atlantic I forget offhand, describing a Republican nightmare scenario of acquitting Trump then having revelations about what they acquitted him of continuing to come out.

Do we know how well the Lev Parnas revelations have affected public perception of the situation yet? How well has it circulated, how many have been newly made aware of the situation, and how many are still stubbornly digging their heels in?

Support for impeachment ticked up a little.

Apparently Mc Connell admitted to the Senate Republicans that he doesn't have the votes to block witnesses.

[up] Trump's probably fuming and McConnell (plus other Trumpeteers) is probably pooping himself. So long as Bolton out and out says "Trump held aid until the Ukrainians started the Investigation", Trump is going to be Guilty in the eyes of the Average American. Obviously Republicans still won't Remove him (though the vote might be closer to it), but this is great for us and terrible for them.

One notable thing with this impeachment is that once something is accomplished, people become more likely to support it.

The impeachment investigation got majority support very quickly after Pelosi announced it, rising from 37% to 52% almost immediately. The House impeaching Trump got majority support a little while after it passed, going from 47% approval (tied with ‘disapprove’) to 51%. I’m guessing some of that is Democrats worried about the political fallout of the process, who switch to approving things once they’ve been done.

And removal is at 48% support now, making it likely that a majority of people would switch to approving of it if it did happen.

Man, it would be hilarious if trump actually got removed. He won’t be, but it’s fun to think about.
