English Localization Cleanup

Go To

The Administrivia policy for works created in other languages is Troping Works Created in Other Languages. At the moment, this is focused on works with official translations.

More broadly, TV Tropes has a rule that the latest English translation will normally take priority over the original (some exceptions are listed on the Administrivia page), but many pages and examples still use older titles and character names. This cleanup is to help relieve that.

For policy discussions, see the wiki talk Translation Policy thread.

For pages needing work, see here: Sandbox.English Localization Cleanup

Or VideoGame/EarthBoundTrilogy, but this is one of those things we won't move unless absolutely necessary.

[up][up][up]As I said every time Detective Conan comes up, community consensus means jack shit according to the actual policies we have in place. (If someone were to actually go ahead and move it to Case Closed, we wouldn't be able to move it back.)

As I also say, moves don't happen unless someone actually takes the initiative to make them happen. We as a community cannot ignore the English name policy, but we can be (and are) lax on certain moves.

[nja][up]: None of this "absolutely necessary" nonsense, please. Can you come up with a good reason to not move it?

The EarthBound series consists solely of video games, so no.

Another major one: what about Detective Conan? The Other Wiki calls it Case Closed, but, if I'm not mistaken, the name had to be changed due to trademark issues with Conan the Barbarian. (Also it's localized in English for Southeast Asia as Detective Conan.)

[up] Rally just mentioned that one; we have a soft consensus not to move it to Case Closed because no one wants to move over all the wicks.

I think it was brought up earlier that Shogakukan Asia kept Detective Conan in their English localization so either title is valid but there’s more media for the series worldwide under Case Closed so I guess it can go either way.

Negima! Magister Negi Magi has more wicks than Conan and it’s steadily being worked on so wicks aren’t a huge issue (just that no one has bothered to move the page yet as said before)

[up] Yep, Negima started with about 3,200 wicks and is down to about 800 now. I'm hoping to finish those off within a month or so!

I'm generally pretty willing to take on the bigger projects as long as I've got a firm go-ahead; I'm just reluctant to touch ones that are more controversial since it'd be a pain to have to undo the work if it's decided later they shouldn't have been touched in the first place.

I've also been rather lazy about actually moving pages lately...though I'm hoping to port over at least Xenoblade soon, and maybe Mai-Otome, though I'm still not 100% confident about Otome - it was initially brought over as My-Hime Z: My-Otome, (or maybe My-Z-Hime: My-Otome? The stylization is weird and I've seen it written out both ways around the web...) Anyway, Funimation has it now, and they call it My-Otome on their site, but the physical copies still have the My-Hime Z / My-Z-Hime part in the logo. It's probably fine to move, but I'd still feel a bit better getting at least one more vote in favor.

TL;DR - I don't mind making big moves and moving lots of wicks as long as any issues are definitively sorted out beforehand.

If there's uncertainty, I'd go with the shorter title, which in this case is My-Otome. Also, if there are official English releases which call it Detective Conan, it's fine to leave it at that title.

Okay, I understand the Detective Conan situation.

Likely similar is Ah! My Goddess. It's shuffled English distributors throughout its run, and depending on which part of the franchise it is, it's either Oh My Goddess (manga, OVAs) or Ah! My Goddess (Mini-Goddess, movie, 2005 TV series). The only one currently in print is the manga, which uses the OMG title.

[down] The original Japanese title is Aa! Megami-sama, and The Other Wiki calls it Oh My Goddess! The OVAs were the first media to be localized. Still confused.

[up]If one medium changes the title but another doesn't, I believe we should stick with the original title, like with Karin which was only retitled Chibi Vampire for the manga, not the anime.

Since it doesn't look like Zombies vs. the Ambulance got an American release, it should be moved to the European title, Zombie Virus.

EDIT: I moved it and all wicks, which was easy as it has no subpages and few wicks.

Manga.Magi Labyrinth Of Magic should be at Manga.Magi The Labyrinth Of Magic. It's currently custom-titled to display the "The". (submitted fix)

So now that the Dai Gyakuten Saiban: Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Bouken games have had official English releases announced, and they’re simply referred to as “The Great Ace Attorney”, I think it’s safe to change the name of the page sometime in the near future.

Sentai Red ga Isekai de Boukensha ni Naru has a page here as The Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World, which appears to be a fan-translated title of something with no official English release. And a Cultural Translation at that, replacing a Super Sentai reference with a Power Rangers one.

Not necessarily a Cultural Translation. The word "Ranger" is commonly (though not universally) used for that purpose in Super Sentai as well.

We have no actual rule for works that haven't been translated.

So Smile PreCure! is placed under its original name, with Glitter Force as a redirect. I’ve no issues with that, but is it just an exception to the “English names” rule? If so, Pokémon: The First Movie may as well redirect to Mewtwo Strikes Back, not the other way around.

I wonder if we can make an exception since by a quick perusal it seems to be a Macekre (it apparently cuts episodes) and is inconsistent with the rest of the franchise names anyway.

If not, then Futari wa Pretty Cure should be looked at, too. There was an English dub that aired in Canada and the UK and made a few changes. We should shorten the title to Pretty Cure and change mentions of "Nagisa" and "Honoka" to "Natalie" and "Hannah" respectively.

Why don’t we simply call all works by their original titles or translations of them?
