English Localization Cleanup

The Administrivia policy for works created in other languages is Troping Works Created in Other Languages. At the moment, this is focused on works with official translations.

More broadly, TV Tropes has a rule that the latest English translation will normally take priority over the original (some exceptions are listed on the Administrivia page), but many pages and examples still use older titles and character names. This cleanup is to help relieve that.

For policy discussions, see the wiki talk Translation Policy thread.

For pages needing work, see here: Sandbox.English Localization Cleanup

One thing I was thinking of was splitting work pages to cover a show's Macekre. For example, we could split Anime. One Piece 4 Kids Dub from Manga. One Piece, Anime.Glitter Force from Anime.Smile Pretty Cure, and Anime.Crayon Shin Chan Funimation Dub from Manga.Crayon Shin Chan. Only issue would be that it would invite Complaining About Shows You Don't Like.

Anyone know anything about JoJo's Bizarre Adventure? I was told recently that several official translations (including the English translations of the videogames) of Part 5 use the "Vento Aureo" subtitle, instead of "Golden Wind".

[up] Most of the relevant pages were never moved to Golden Wind in the first place. (There were two attempts in this thread to move it there, neither of which succeeded.)

[up][up] If there is an official title for the manga itself, that should take precedence. But the manga isn't out in America yet (it's been licensed but not yet published).

However, the anime is and it's subtitled Golden Wind. Since Viz Media owns the rights to both the anime and the manga, it's fairly safe to assume that the same name will be used for the manga when/if it comes out.

~Heavy Metal Hermit Crab, thanks for all the moves you've been doing. I see you moved Literature.Ousama Game to Literature.Kings Game 2009, but it should really be at just Literature.Kings Game. As I brought up on the Roleplay cleanup thread, Roleplay.Kings Game should be moved to "The King's Game" since both the page and image call it that. Also, the precedent is that if an official work shares its name with a fan work, only the fan work gets its title disambiguated.

I still think Alice in Wonderland (JP) should be titled Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. None of the sources HeavyMetalHermitCrab cited here are official translations, and the only official English release to my knowledge are the UK VHS's, which title it Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

[down]Fixed, no apostrophe in "Adventures".

[up] Doesn't the Golden Sun move technically violate consensus? Admittedly I was fine with anything that wasn't the nonexistent subtitle, but the page had already been moved.

Paging ~StFan, whose move rationale was "moving to proper retronym".

2025: the year it all ends?

Using the retronym IS the standard when the first game (or movie, whatever) is giving its name to a franchise.

Using a by-year disambiguation to distinguish a franchise from its first installment is doing things backward. Only if two video games existed with the same name but different years would this be justified.

Honestly, people are jumping a bit too fast on disambiguation-by-year. The retronym is the superior option, notably because it's allowed to make it disappear with a Custom Title, unlike a disambiguation by year which can only be put in parenthesis. Especially if there are other modifications to be done to the name through a Custom Title.

That was such a basic move, I didn't think looking for consensus was any necessary.

[up][up]People here said to use the year instead of adding a 1 at the end because no other Golden Sun game has a numeral in the title.

I still think Alice in Wonderland (JP) should be moved to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. It doesn't matter what The Anime Encyclopedia, IMDb, or MyAnimeList call it, only what official localizations call it. And the only official English translation was the UK VHS tapes titled Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

[up](Assuming there's no evidence of another title) We should probably make it Anime.Alices Adventures In Wonderland 1983 to avoid a subpage collision with the original novel.

Okay, I've finally started moving Franchise/Touhou over to Touhou Project, but I've got some questions.

Will all the (official) games and materials - for example, VideoGame.Touhou Reiiden Highly Responsive To Prayers, Manga.Touhou Bougetsushou need to be moved over to Touhou Project as well?

If not, then the various pages on the main character index will probably have to stay where they are, because they're currently connected to their associated video games. So we have a character page called Characters.Touhou Koumakyou The Embodiment Of Scarlet Devil, and changing it to Characters.Touhou Project Koumakyou The Embodiment Of Scarlet Devil would disconnect it from VideoGame.Touhou Koumakyou The Embodiment Of Scarlet Devil and the other Scarlet Devil subpages.

This also extends to the other sub(sub)pages to some extent - there's a character page called Characters.Touhou PC 98 which connects to AwesomeMusic.Touhou PC 98 (actually AwesomeMusic.Touhou PC 98 Era using a redirect), except I renamed it to AwesomeMusic.Touhou Project PC 98 Era. So now you can get from Characters.Touhou PC 98 to AwesomeMusic.Touhou Project PC 98 Era (through various redirects), but you can't get back to Characters.Touhou PC 98 through the navigation unless I change the Characters page's name to include "Project" or create a redirect or something. Argh!

I don't know if this is even making sense anymore.

Basically, do we want to change all the subsubpages (pages that branch off from the main Awesome Music, Characters, Fanfic Recs, etc. pages) to Touhou Project as well, or just leave those names at Touhou? Changing em will (at least temporarily) break the interconnectedness of...everything.

[up] Sub-subpages are a pain and we should probably keep them where they are. We have a sort-of precedent when we didn't move the Danganronpa character sub-subpages to include their games' subtitles.

[up][up][up]We did remove the "Super" and "New" from the character subpages of the second and third DR games, respectively. I believe I was the one who moved at least one of them. I prefer keeping the subtitle off the subpages for conciseness.

On a related note, I would not have included "2004" in every subpage of Characters.Reborn 2004.

Also, we're just about the only major site that doesn't call Enigme "Enigma". I'm not even sure that's a localization issue, I think it's just us taking the title stylization (ənígmə) too literally.

Regarding sub-subpages, Marvel Cinematic Universe uses MCU for its character subpages. At least some of them would go over the 64-character limit otherwise.
