English Localization Cleanup

Go To

The Administrivia policy for works created in other languages is Troping Works Created in Other Languages. At the moment, this is focused on works with official translations.

More broadly, TV Tropes has a rule that the latest English translation will normally take priority over the original (some exceptions are listed on the Administrivia page), but many pages and examples still use older titles and character names. This cleanup is to help relieve that.

For policy discussions, see the wiki talk Translation Policy thread.

For pages needing work, see here: Sandbox.English Localization Cleanup

[up]Actually, non-JoJo fans who haven't seen the series on Crunchyroll are more likely to be familiar with the original names used on the vast majority of the internet, including Wikipedia. That's true for me, at least.

I know we're repeating topics here, but do all English-language releases of JJBA use the same set of names?

[up][up] Can confirm as a non-JoJo fan - I'm much more familiar with the original names since pretty much everyone uses them, and only know a few of the localized ones from jokes made about them

So, in the JJBA case, would it be reasonable to argue that the original names (at least for the Stands) are widespread to the point that giving priority to the Writing Around Trademarks names would cause the opposite effect to what the standard rule is supposed to achieve?

... And that's called jazz!

[up] This is such an extreme case that it shouldn't be used as a precedent. I'd consider this the Bush v. Gore of localization policy.

Nobody is suggesting to use it as a precedent, more that it should be an exception to the rule because following the letter of the rule breaks the spirit.

My point here is that if we allow the JJBA fan names willy-nilly, someone might try to point at the decision as precedent for a dissimilar case.

Far too many people look at JJBA as a Japanese/English debate, when it's entirely a trademark case and has nothing to actually do with localization.

But it's also downright ridiculous to require the wiki use the names that literally nobody uses.

I'm not a JJBA fan. I couldn't tell you anything beyond the most basic shit, and yet I do know the names of the characters- the Japanese names. Because online, that's what I see everyone use. I have a vague idea of what people are talking about if they use those names, and zero idea if they use the "localized" names.

It's against the spirit of the rule in this case to go with localization. I don't give two shits about the Japanese/English debate- I care about whether or not the wiki is accessible to readers, all readers, and a majority of readers would be more familiar with the Japanese names. That's all there is to it.

Allowing this as the Exception That Proves The Rule won't be setting a precedent, it'd just be saying "hey, maybe this rule doesn't work in 100% of all cases and maybe at times there's a gray area, and sometimes it's best to not go with the localized version if it's the one nobody knows or would recognize".

I'm not disagreeing with you that this shouldn't set a precedent, and not being a JJBA fan I have no horse in the race of whether we allow this exception to the usual rule of thumb or not.

But bwburke is not wrong that, sooner or later, someone will attempt to use this as a precedent for their pet wonk, and it will become a whole thing.

I've been a Jojo fan for a few years now, and the only times I see the localized names used is when the greater fanbase makes fun of them, or when the EXTREMELY small group of anime and dub-only fans talk about the series, and the wider fanbase tends to be pretty quick at poking fun at their usage of the localized names.

Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie: Pyramid of Light should really be at simply Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie. While somewhat nitpicky, Funimation calls Rolling Girls The Rolling Girls.

This might not be the correct thread, but what's the stance on works that use literal translation titles? The 1986 anime film Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen!, for instance, was never released outside Japan, but is on the wiki as The Great Mission to Save Princess Peach!.

Brought to my attention that Rokujyouma No Shinryakusha should be Invaders Of The Rokujyouma, started by copy-pasting it over to the main page, will be changing cross-wicks and moving sub-pages later.

The official publisher has it as "Love Me For Who I Am" so the former should be cut as a dupe with the incorrect title.
