Outdated Administrivia Pages

Go To

This is a thread to discuss those Administrivia pages in need of a little updating- you know the ones. The ones that still cite rules we've long since changed, or the ones that don't properly cite our current standards. Some of them are even scattered in Main/!

So, this is the place to take those pages and fix them up with the help of the community.

For a list of current projects, see Outdated Administrivia Pages.

Note: This thread is not for asking mods to make one-off edits to Locked Pages, Administrivia-related or otherwise, such as requesting additions to an Example Sectionectomy index. Please use this thread for that.

I dunno, I was expecting this to be said on Welcome to TV Tropes somewhere...

We absolutely have rules for this. What to Do If You Are Suspended talks about it because I wrote that page.

I added a bullet to Welcome to TV Tropes under the Rules section.

Idk. For how important a rule it is, it feels like it deserves its own page. I'm having trouble actually locating where it's talked about on those pages, and have seen many tropers linking to things like MangaFox and the like on trope pages before as a visual example of the trope, meaning most probably aren't aware of this rule. (I'd give specific examples, but I don't remember off the top of my head where I spotted most of these...)

Edit: The Enigma of Amigara Fault has had a link to a page where you can read it online for almost a full decade now, though granted I'm not sure if that's actually been okayed by the author to be read free online.

"Don't do Illegal Things" sounds good, but I feel like it doesn't get to the root of the issue.

Maybe "TV Tropes is not for Piracy" or something like that.

"Don't Break the Law" sounds good to me.

Edit: I feel like it should give an idea of what is and isn't allowed to be linked to when it comes to things that may seem like a legal grey area. Like

Video Games: Linking to ROMs or emulation hosting sites is forbidden. Linking to hack files for ROM Hacks is fine, so long as you aren't linking to a pre-patched ROM.

Video/Manga/Comic examples: Only link to official sources if you can, and avoid linking to sites that illegally has the media up in full. Brief snippets/panels hosted on Imagur are fine so long as they aren't the entire manga/comic.

I know sarcasm doesn't travel well in text, but that was facetious. If we have to tell people not to do illegal things, such as plagiarize or post infringing content, the problem is with them, not us.

I scanned back to here without finding where I discussed this before. I sandboxed a few changes to There's No Such Thing as Notability and How to Create a Work's Page. Does anyone agree that they are an improvement (and should replace the current Administrivia/ articles) or does it not really add anything useful for the wiki?

Either way, I'd like to give it a week's deadline because we don't need sandbox duplicates for months.

I think they're pretty good, though I still think TNSTAN should mention the fact that just because all works are notable doesn't mean all information on the wiki is, as one of my biggest issues is that people keep referencing the page in unfitting contexts assuming that just because the rule exists, that means that we want to catalogue all information about anything ever. I have to keep reminding those people that the notability rule only applies to works and nothing more.

Other than that, I'm now reminded of NamespaceGoesHere.Title Goes Here. Now that the cutlist bug has been fixed, can we update that page to give actual information to people who find it?

[up]If the cutlist bug has been fixed, can't a mod just temporarily remake the page and cut it with a better cut reason?

Ditto for the PRLC'd So Bad, It's Horrible subpages (which inaccurately say that all of SBIH was being cut instead of just those specific pages).

Edit: Wait a minute... those SBIH subpages' cut reasons are fixed, but NamespaceGoesHere.Title Goes Here wasn't for some reason. Odd.

I was reminded about this thread. Loaded Trope Word - looks like an Administrivia page, is page typed as such, is on the Administrivia index, but is on Main/. Should it move namespaces?

~War Jay 77, how about I change Removing tropes, examples... anything... because of "notability" stifles the wiki. to say Removing any work example because of "notability" stifles the wiki., and add Notability is not an excuse to shoehorn an example on a page when it doesn't fit the trope. after Other than that, all we ask is that the examples fit the trope.?

Hmm. The current text says that removing examples because of notability (emphasis mine) stifles the wiki. I don't see any indication that folks would mistake that as applying to any deletion and I don't recall this being a common misunderstanding at all.

So I have to oppose crazysamaritan's change. It equivocates and repeats itself for no good reason.

[up] I've seen it a lot on ATT. If I remembered / could find specific instances I'd link you. Suffice to say though that it pops up often enough for me to see a need to fix it.

Edit: Dug through. found some examples just by searching "notability", and this isn't even scratching the surface of people who use the rule to mean "everything is notable".

Speaking of pages that need to be moved to Administrivia...

Trope Idea Salvage Yard has been discussed on-and-off for months but no action has been taken. I think, like the Tropes Needing TRS page, it should be made official. It's been legitimized by TRS and people are more likely to find it if it's not shoved away in the Sandbox namespace.

I agree that both Loaded Trope Word and the Salvage Yard may benefit from a move to Administrivia/. The notability section may also work, though honestly I think the page just has a kind of crappy name that makes it seem overly broad. Also may give a writeup for NGH.TGH later.

Thoughts on this writeup for NamespaceGoesHere.Title Goes Here's message?

If you want to create a work page here, you're in the wrong place. Please replace the "NamespaceGoesHere" part of the URL with one of the work namespaces and "TitleGoesHere" with the work's actual name (or as close as it can be done with alphanumeric characters, see How to Make a Custom Title).
