This is a thread to discuss those Administrivia pages in need of a little updating- you know the ones. The ones that still cite rules we've long since changed, or the ones that don't properly cite our current standards. Some of them are even scattered in Main/!

So, this is the place to take those pages and fix them up with the help of the community.

For a list of current projects, see Outdated Pages.

So we keep getting stealth launches and I really do think the new TLP guidelines should launch soon because it makes it more clear that you can't launch unless everyone is on board.

Also, I want to try my hand at writing Popcorn Posting later.

I'll update Example As Thesis now.

Can we expand First-Person Writing to mention when using first person is okay? People have brought up indexes and captions and stuff for using first-person, despite that those uses don't fall under First-Person Writing as we define it.

Okay, after a week of attempting to get somebody with mod privileges to cancel the redirect on Crusader Kings II to Crusader Kings, somebody told me that adding "?action=edit" to the end of the URL for the former would allow me to edit the page without getting redirected.

I think it would be helpful to add "how to cancel a redirect" to the Creating New Redirects page.

You can also go to the Related page; that shows all redirects pointing to the page and a link to their Related pages, which do not redirect and have access to the edit buttons.

More generally, Needs a Redirect says "For instructions (and general guidelines) on exactly how and when to create a redirect, see Creating New Redirects." However, it doesn't say when redirects are appropriate (such as works that get renamed and individual works for a medium-specific franchise article).

So, I stumbled across Encounters.Index. I know it's an attempt at making some kind of text adventure tutorial for editing the wiki, but given that most of the pages haven't been touched in 8 years, the forum thread linked on all of the pages doesn't exist anymore, the image links have been broken for at least 5 years (going by the page history on Wiki Vandal), and some of the pages contradict modern wiki policiesnote , is there any reason for us to keep these pages?

They may have nostalgic value for people (seeing things how they used to be back in the day, in simpler times can be fun). I myself kinda like them, but think remaking these pages as some kind of visual novel in an engine designed for them would be an interesting idea for a newbie teaching tool, but until that happens, I'd probably be fine with them, maybe corrected irrelevant policy bits if they're harmful.

I mean, it does seem very outdated. They might be worth archiving as they are currently or moving off-site for historical purposes, but as is they do nothing and you can't do a whole lot with the game.

[up][up][up]Is Encounters/ even a valid namespace? This reminds me of an index that was brought to TRS that was in an invalid namespace (in that index's case, Index/).

It's not listed on Namespace. I assume it was just overlooked, though, as this was very much an official project.

Y'all we really need to swap TLP Guidelines Redux in. If it needs more edits we can do those afterward.

Ccorb just suggested it.

I don't typically ask these things at the locked pages thread because in the past all the swaps were done here.

So, I guess we're done with the TLP Guidelines thing for now.

Here's something that's been bugging me. Media Categories lists most standard media categories, which is good, but I was wondering if we could make a separate section on it for video game-centric tropes which are sorted by genre, as that's something I've always had a problem with. We'd also need to decide how to exactly put them, as sometimes folders are like "Platform Game", sometimes "Platform Games", and sometimes "Platformers". Does anyone agree that we could use this? And if so, does deciding how exactly heading, folder, and subpage names for games should be written need a separate discussion?

Standard Media Categories could use some work (it is missing Real Life as a category amoung other potential issues), but I do agree with adding Medium-specific genre category rules. However, I'd prefer if such rules were simply "use the work's genre index or 'Mixed Genres' if more than one applies".

Another thing it's missing is the "Eastern Animation" category for animation produced in Central and Eastern Europe, and the fact that we sometimes combine Mythology and Religion.

TBH the name "Eastern Animation" is a bit confusing.

No, Eastern Animation isn't missing; it's just mislabeled as "Asian Animation". I say mislabeled because African cartoons are also in the Animation namespace. It should just be the Animated Television folder, contrasting with the Live-Action Television folder, but plain "Animation" would be fine.

But on this wiki, there's the catch-all "Animation/" namespace for anything that doesn't fit in Anime/ or WesternAnimation/, and on trope pages, there's Asian Animation (from Asia, outside Japan) and Eastern Animation (from the former Iron Curtain countries). A good example of this is on Four-Fingered Hands.

I'd be up for merging both into a general "animation" category.

Bad example; the one work on that page is an animated film, so the folder shouldn't exist in the first place as the example belongs in Film — Animation. Cowboy Episode is better. I'm countering with Seashell Bra, Un-Canceled, The Fair Folk, Stable Time Loop, and Animesque, which splits it into different areas (including Animation — U.S.A.). I think plain "Animation" is the more common folder and applies to Eastern European cartoons as well as to African and South American.

I agree. When I asked to move pages like TurnOfTheMillennium.Asian Animation and TurnOfTheMillennium.Eastern European Animation to "of the 2000s" titles, people said Animation of the 2000s would be better as they'd be too short as separate pages and that's where the content ended up. So, I guess that's the first thing that'd need to be changed on the Media Categories page.
