Outdated Administrivia Pages

Go To

This is a thread to discuss those Administrivia pages in need of a little updating- you know the ones. The ones that still cite rules we've long since changed, or the ones that don't properly cite our current standards. Some of them are even scattered in Main/!

So, this is the place to take those pages and fix them up with the help of the community.

For a list of current projects, see Outdated Administrivia Pages.

Note: This thread is not for asking mods to make one-off edits to Locked Pages, Administrivia-related or otherwise, such as requesting additions to an Example Sectionectomy index. Please use this thread for that.

It's a more recent rule, but basically it's been decided that TLP is not the place to create policy pages. It's on TLP Guidelines now IIRC. Edit: Oh, wait, I think it's actually TLP Guidelines Redux or How To Create And Launch TLP Drafts. In any case, TLP has changed a lot don't forget.

Don't forget, people also came and Popcorn Posted our thread about the 5T, stopping by for the sole purpose of pointing out what we did.

Okay, Sandbox.TLP Guidelines Redux, last month. I'm not actually as outdated as I was starting to think.

Yeah, it's a relatively new guideline but it's been more of an unspoken "thing" for a while, mostly though nobody really tried to make Administrivia/ pages in the TLP lately anyway.

Also, I think that page is probably ready to be swapped in.

Sorry for going off-topic, but shouldn't Missing Supertrope be in the Administrivia/ namespace, since it's actually TV Tropes-specific, in contrast to how the previous pages I mentioned (Red Link and Blue Link) are also concepts on other wikis?

I'm starting to wonder if this thread should have a sandbox to keep an agenda in, similarly to what I previously suggested for the Nightmare Fuel thread.

I've tried to rewrite Just Launch It Already! into less incendiary language.

The act of proposing, writing, and stewarding a blue-ribbon TLP draft is many things, but it's rarely easy or fast. That's just the nature of the TLP process: some drafts can sit for weeks, if not months or even years, before they reach launchworthy status.

Given this kind of timeframe, it's only natural that not everyone who starts a draft will actually finish it in a timely manner. Some will inevitably forget or lose interest. Others may decide that they don't have what it takes to finish the draft. For others, life will simply get in the way. Others simply can't hit the launch button for fear that that their draft still isn't ready. Whatever the reason, many TLP drafts find themselves floating in limbo, always being worked on (or at least contributed to) but never actually being launched.

This can admittedly be a frustrating situation, which sometimes leads some of the more impatient members of our community to start shouting "Just Launch It Already!"

Don't misunderstand: there is nothing inherently wrong with encouraging someone to launch a trope if you think it's ready. Sometimes some friendly encouragement is needed. But being nasty or pushy about it is not the way to go about it.

If the sponsor is actively working on the draft, give them space and don't harrass or push them. Everyone works at their own pace, and everyone has different ideas of what makes a TLP draft "ready" for launch. Moreover, the act of finishing up and launching a draft is a fair bit of work, some of which is time-sensitive: the launcher must not only launch the page, but index it and crosswick the examples. While this part of launching a trope isn't necessarily difficult, it is time-consuming and even a bit tedious, especially if the draft's been sitting long enough to garner a huge list of examples. Not everyone is in a situation where they can spare the time to give their draft a proper launch.

If the draft is actually abandoned and has become Up for Grabs, then you do have the option of adopting and launching it yourself. However, be mindful that if you do this you will become responsible for the draft, and you'll be expected to do all the work that comes with launching it. Being faced with this prospect is one reason why a lot of contributors who yell "Just Launch It Already!" aren't exactly falling all over themselves to adopt abandoned drafts.

Whatever the case, no matter how ready you think a draft is, don't push a sponsor to launch the TLP draft. We all have lives and personal schedules, so there is no "right" time to launch a well-developed draft.

Given how frequently people link The Fic May Be Yours, but the Trope Page Is Ours when they're thinking of Auto-Erotic Troping, perhaps it would be a good idea to add a "see also" bit at the bottom?

Not exactly an outdated page, but I wasn't sure where else to post this. I've just made the following addition to Text Formatting Rules, under Quotes Formatting:

The use of backslashes allows for formatting to span multiple lines. For example:

->''This is the first line of a song\\
This is the second line of a song''
-->-- ''Wiki/TVTropes''

becomes:

This is the first line of a song
This is the second line of a song

I thought about attributing it to TV Tropes: The Musical but wasn't sure about making up a fake (obviously fake, but still) work. Attributing it to TV Tropes is technically correct. Thoughts?

So Example As Thesis doesn't actually explain why that style of writing is bad. We should give it a rewrite, even just an extra paragraph or so, to explain the actual problem with it.

[up]I agree that it should say why they're bad. Also, I think it should be moved to Administrivia/, since it's referring to something found in trope descriptions without being a trope itself (it's not even indexed under Wiki Tropes).

I think the third paragraph explains why it's bad to at least some extent, plus the fourth paragraph mentions it's unprofessional? It's at least something. If it can be explained clearer, go for it, but I have no idea what to do with it. Also, agreed it belongs in Administrivia/.

#895: Oct 15th 2020 at 12:11:40 PM

Well basically, the issue isn't that it's unprofessional, but more about how it can be misleading. Starting with a thesis example can lead readers to think the trope is more narrow than it actually is, and that their examples must fit the scenario described. That's the big issue with them; they unnecessarily muddle the actual definition and thus should only be used sparingly if at all.

Edit: In unrelated news, I think we can swap in TLP Guidelines Redux if everyone thinks it's ready.

If that's the case, I'd say it should be mentioned in the third paragraph or a new one below it (honestly, the last two sentences of your post before the edit seem to hit the nail on the head, I think they could be straight up pasted there). Also TLP Guidelines Redux is acceptable, though I've added one section related to bad drafts I wrote four pages ago and it received agreement.

Something I thought of a bit ago is that What Goes Where on the Wiki should clarify where certain things don't go, since I've seen multiple cases of objective tropes ending up on YMMV pages due to people not getting that YMMV pages are only for things that are marked as YMMV.
