Having just seen it, it's something like Go Mad from the Isolation + Psychological Horror + Through the Eyes of Madness + Ho Yay. The overall aesthetic suggests the combined influence of Ingmar Bergman, David Lynch, and David Cronenberg. Robert Eggers seems to specialize in layering on the frightening atmosphere, instead of going for any obvious jump scares; I don't think there was a single conventional "scare" moment in this film, but it runs your nerves absolutely ragged anyway.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but Willem Dafoe seems to be playing… Willem Dafoe.
By the way, reviewer Chris Stuckmann rated the film A+, the first one he's given since Lady Bird two years ago. Enough to at least make me curious.

New movie from Robert Eggers (of The Witch fame) and A24. Stars Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson.
