Let's see if we can make an insectoid hive caste system. I'll give a few obvious roles.

The Queen is the overmind who orders the entire hive and is the sole mother of them all.

Builders are the ones who...well build.

Warriors defend the hive from threats

Gatherers get food for the hive

I bite.

Brain: the one controlling the hive.

Muscles: the ones doing the heavy lifting in the hive.

Nerves: the ones relying the orders of the Brain to the rest of the hive.

Bones: the biggest ones that carries the hive around on their backs when called for it.

Skins: The ones protecting the hive from outside threats, such as heat, water, sooth, toxins, etc...

Senses: The information gatherers of the world that provide specific inputs to the brain which send response to the rest of the hive in turn.

Nails: the front assault force of the hive, used as front line against outwards threats.

Teeth: Secondary defense which both turn any edible material into a mushy mess that the rest of the hive can nourish itself with, as it lacks the necessary parts to crush the food first and turn it into liquids. Also serve as a secondary line of defense, as their shells are the hardest ones, right next to the Bones.

Reproducer: Only one, responsible for creating new hives beyond itself. Also serve as vessel to replace lost numbers of their own hive by assimilating new hives into itself.

Fats: Emergency food rations for the hive, grub-like beings, yellow, squirming, bloated and pulsating. Usually the ones to feed last when everyone else had their fill of rations, stockpile.

How about a caste system where the the members change caste depending on what stage of their lifecycle they're in?

[up] Oh that's good. There could also be changes depending on the seasons (scarcity/plentitude of food to be gathered/sunshine, rain, and other factors).

I actually came up with the idea when I thought of a species of spec evo eusocial lepidopterans.
