[up] I know. I just think most any villainous team up inevitably leads to at least some degree of Conservation of Ninjutsu. Even if you try to avoid it.

I'd love to see the Sinister 6 in action, I just worry I wouldn't like their eventual defeat.

I cannot be the only one who thought Mysterio was very similar to Syndrome in this movie. Not a negative just something I noticed. This is probably my 4th favorite MCU movie.

The main difference is Mysterio’s plan didn’t go haywire from his own technology turning against him.

Had Spidey not interfered he would have been completely successful.

I mean Syndrome is more or less an adaptation of Mysterio anyway.

I really like how Mysterio was reimagined as a sort of Collective Identity; I wouldn't say I find it unbelievable that Comics!Beck could craft all of those mindbending illusions alone, but having him as the Prima Donna Director to an entire production crew of CG artists, costume designers, and acting coaches is a novel take on the character and eases the suspension of disbelief a tad.

It also means that if they ever wanted to bring Mysterio back with one of his successors in the comics, they easily could because his gang is still out there.

Hell, it means that "Quentin Beck" himself could just keep on appearing if they wanted to even though he's dead.

Did anyone else get a good look at MJ's shirt at the end? It looked like it was a drawing based off of Zendaya's real life Joan of Arc cosplay.

Just came back from seeing this. Actually a pretty great time. Mysterio sure as shit lived up to expectations...sorta. He's, yet again, another guy inadvertantly driven to villainy by Tony Stark. So that was mildly tiring. Most everything else about him (ESPECIALLY those illusions he puts Spider-Man through) was cool. Action is much better than in Homecoming, MJ is once again charming and cute and I enjoyed her chemistry with Peter, and on that note the supporting cast is generally entertaining, and yeah, those credits scenes...wow. VERY interested in where Spidey goes from here.

In fact in the spiderman case this trope would have some justification.

With his agility and cobwebs, Peter could make them attack each other.

You know, I was always making jokes about how everything is Tony's fault for causing all these villains, but them going to that well again with Myserio...finally forces to acknowledge that these guys are not Tony's fault.

They made their own choices every time. Beck is just the biggest example.

Instead of pretending to be a hero, he could have become a real one. He's clearly a pretty good engineer and scientist. And that's just one example. There are lots of things he could have done, especially since Tony isn't around any more.

Instead he did what he did, while complaining that Tony screwed him. Well the fact that you were willing to kill people to perform your scheme says maybe Tony was onto something there friend.

Tony Stark is not an excuse anymore. If you're causing shit and saying it's his fault...guess what? It's probably yours.

Had a little longer to think about Far From Home today.

  • Sometimes the movie feels like it's trying to be Raimi's Spider-Man 2 for the MCU generation. It and FFH share the same core conflict: Peter doesn't want to be a hero because the constant responsibility is adversely worsening his civilian life. But while I think trying to retell that film is actually a pretty good and high-aiming goal, it feels less successful because the stakes are all different. In SM2, Peter's struggle is that stopping random everyday crimes will leave him jobless and alone. In FFH, Peter's struggle is that saving the world... will slow down his attempts to perfectly ask out a classmate. So yeah, it makes him seem more selfish. Maybe it would've worked if they had placed more emphasis on Peter's trauma from battling Thanos and actually dying as why he wants a break so bad, but it felt like the big central stake was kept on "asking out MJ".
  • A bunch of Homecoming's open ends for the sequel got resolved offscreen. Why is Aunt May perfectly fine with Peter being a superhero? We're never going to see how that discussion went. Why is Peter really interested in MJ, when previously he seemed to just regard her as "that weird friend"? Never gonna see when he realized he likes her. The big consequence of crossovers is that they tend to abruptly halt individual series' plot threads, and by the time the sequel's chance arrives it's too late. Remember how "the hunt for Bucky" evaporated? Since Spider-Man's Sony-Marvel deal explicitly relies on Marvel getting all the money from Spidey's crossovers, his secret identity getting leaked at the end may not amount to much if it's now time for Spider-Man Pals With Doctor Strange.
  • I really liked Mysterio commanding an army of drones. Usually what happens with robot army villains is that the drones are too anthropomorphic, underpowered, not very tactically creative, and rife with obvious weaknesses (see Iron Man 2 and Age of Ultron). Mysterio's drones I felt had the best balance of being dangerous, utilitarian, and not too easy to defeat, especially with their holographic illusions.
  • Mysterio's nightmare is one of my favorite sequences of all year. Was clutching my heart the whole time, I was that terrified. Partly the images, and partly the underlying horror of "where even is Peter now?"
  • This is just a nitpick, and the film doesn't suffer for its absence, but it's never explained why much of the Mysterio crew is apathetic about civilian casualties. I think it would've helped if it had been clearer that many of them, being ex-Stark Industries, were from Tony's earlier days as a war profiteer and thus were hired to be amoral.
  • There was a kind of interesting point made by Mysterio of "nobody listens to smart people anymore unless they dress like superheroes", but it's dropped after that one mention. Oh well.
  • Depending on how long Maria Hill has been a Skrull, Marvel has the chance to undo her whitewashing (comics Hill is Latina) by retconning that as Soren having screwed up her disguise. tongue Also my Mexican mom was mad about "Ixteco" at the beginning, and now she wants to act in movies. Hopefully she gets in far enough to get this family aboard the America Chavez movie. XD

Wait a second.

Turning Valkyrie into a black woman is fine, but going back to Maria Hill in a Canadian is wrong?

Double Standard.

Also, Maria Hill before being adapted was a C-list, so it is not as if it mattered much.

I can't tell if you're being facetious, so the short answer is: yes, different standards because actors of color get less opportunities than white actors. C-list matters to us because every little opportunity is more than nothing.

Saw it today. I enjoyed it a lot. I don't have a ranking of "best MCU films", but if I did, this would be very high up. Easily my second favorite Spiderman film (and I don't think anything is going to topple Spiderverse from the top spot for a looooooong time).

Mysterio was perfect and probably my favorite MCU baddie. Managed to be wacky and terrifying at the same time. Also, he totally isn't dead.

I generally prefer the MCU when it is about individual heroes and their friends as opposed to the big crossovers, so this film was right up my alley.

I enjoyed the humor in general, but my favorite bit was the Snap's in-universe name being "the blip".

Bringing back "Tony Stark built this in a cave! With a bunch of scraps!" dude was pandering and I love it.

Peter being unmasked doesn't have quite as big an impact as he should since he was the only MCU superhero whose identity wasn't public knowledge and that's never been an issue in the MCU. Hell, one of the defining moments of Iron Man 1 was Tony rejecting his comic book cover story in favor of flat out revealing his identity. I think the real issue is going to be his being framed for the London attack.

I was one of only two people in my theater that clapping at the return of Simmons's Jameson, oddly enough.

Put Talos in every MCU movie. Hell, retcon him into being various side characters throughout the MCU.

A sinister Six could work as some sort of Anti-Avengers team up; except Peter takes the place of Thanos. Hell, you could even have them be a vigilante team brought together to bring Peter down if this identity thing sticks.
