As someone that honestly enjoyed Pokemon trainer characters almost as much as the pokemon themselves this game seems right up my alley.
I wonder if we'll get character events like in Dragalia where a mishmash of trainers just hang out and goof off.
Some Technical Quibbles:
The character designs were often as rich as the Pokemon themselves. There's also the Anime and Adventures fleshing them out a bit. Even without the recent backlash in the core series, a Human-Focused Spinoff was a cash grab waiting to happen.
Personally, however, I still would have wanted to lead as one of the Player Characters of the core games. That way, you could choose your starter from that respective generation's pack. You could then choose one of the trainers you've "collected" when starting a New Game+, though you would then be locked with their respective signature starter.
Though, I wonder if your Pokemon evolves over the course of the game. Rosa's Snivy seems to indicate such.
So I did. Wasn't sure about Adventures, but I suppose if they really wanna go nuts, that might make it in as well.
So who else is gonna come up with their own Mystic Arte esque phrase for these new flashy attacks?
Time....to unleash the funk! <Insert move name here>
That phrase should be reserved for Miror B.
Screw him! I've been saying that for years...not here. In my head.
I hear by claim both unleash the funk and unlimited funk.
And none will challenge me.
Go ahead, but you realize "funk" has other meanings right?

I am aware.
Hugh: Im going to unleash my Rage! HRAAAAAAAAH!!LETS GO BOUFALLANT!
FULL-ENRAGED HEAD CHARGE!
I can't believe Kris is here.
Rightful order has been restored.
Hold on, if Barry has Piplup that means Dawn's official pokemon will be a Chimchar or Turtwig line. Did not expect that.
May better be the user of Blaziken though. Justice for Zexy.
Dawn's Signature Mon has always been Chimchar in official art. I think Piplup fits her better but artists usually give that to Lucas.
I'm taking this game with a grain of salt. I don't think it confidms anything canonically.
Norman being Brendan's father would be so disappointing.

In the anime Barry had Empoleon as well, so for a season the only game chatacters had the same starter line.
You know, with characters like Brendan having Treecko and stuff, I wonder if we actually can play as generic trainers or if they are just NPC only.
I'm currently wondering whether we'll see Youngster Joey and his top-percentage Rattata.
Map of the Pasio region◊.
Pichu-Kun: Interestingly, Pokémon: Diamond and Pearl Adventure! was the only adaptation to follow suit: both of the longrunning Manga gave Chimchar to Barry's equivalent, while the Anime gave him to first Paul, then Ash. Conversely, in Adventures, Platinum got Piplup, as did both Dawn and Barry in the Anime, as Bleck already pointed out.
Given that much of the preview stuff has focused on Green Ash the Pikachu Camper/Picknicker, I'm thinking that they will be the Player Character.
Again, I would rather have the option of choosing between the Game Players so that, for one, I can choose my starter from among the traditional Starter Mons. There would also be the potential for different first acts per character, though not necessarily based on the source games. Also, Youngster Joey would be a possible first companion for the Johto PCs; the other PCs would have similar options if such could be found in their games (e.g. Tristan for the Alola PCs; also, are the Ultra Alola Mains considered as separate entities from the Original Alola Mains?)
Ah, you're missing the intention: if they let you choose a protag to play as instead of an OC, then they wouldn't be able to get that sweet whale money for May/Dawn/Serena/Red/Hilda/etc.
Red being in his teenage design while Misty is in her preteen design is weird. I'm not gonna play the game, but I hope it has costumes or variants. HGSS Misty, HGSS Sabrina, etc, etc.
It's a shame we've never seen older versions of protagonists besides Red. Adult Dawn with a Giratina spikes my interest.
It's a gacha game where many of the most popular characters have several canon costumes. I'd be shocked if there weren't a bunch of alts. It'd be playing hell with continuity to have, say, both ORAS May and Emerald May, but having teen Red with OG Brock and Misty and the Alola characters he met as an adult already does that.

I'm sorry, "Adult"?note Seriously, Misty and Brock using Megas notwithstanding, I don't see anything from the SM Anime that confirms that Unova and Kalos are in continuity. Not saying that they aren't; I'm more along the lines of SM being an Interquel.
Anyway, it's not like they aren't going to be charging "sweet whale money" for Steven, Cynthia, Diantha, or Kukui, anyway. Same with the Anime-based or even Adventures-based alts even if you could get the mains from the start and earn the Gym Leaders in normal gameplay. Heck, Adult!Red & Adult!Blue would likely be separate characters from RB Red & Blue to get even more cash. Mario Kart separates the Babies from the Mains.
EDIT: Oh, and we can't forget the purchase only campaigns for Silver, Zinnia, N, and Gladion, which would be the only way to get those characters.
POST-REPLY: Misty & Brock met four of the Captains in their roles as Ash's Classmates. Granted, Ash hasn't met the Player Characters, but, presumably, the only Captains that (adult) Red and Blue met were Kiawe and Mallow.

....Crap, I accidentally called Red "Ash," but... don't pretend you didn't know what I meant!
And many moneymakers are better than one! And it's been proven that luck-based gacha mechanics with a lot of desirable characters are way more profitable than more expensive one-time purchases for expansions. Just look at the relative grosses of Mario Run and Fire Emblem Heroes. It's no coincidence that Nintendo has decided to release gachas for its two most popular franchises after repeated experimentation with other monetization models in its mobile games.
Tallying up the starting roster... Poison is the only type not represented by a type specialist. All the others have at least one Gym Leader, Trial Captain, Elite Four member, or Champion.
No Koga, Janine, or Roxie. Not even a Plumeria.
Roxie and Plumeria would be tight.
