[up] Well, In-Universe Show Within a Show examples aside.

[up][up] I'm not sure what Broken Base and Base-Breaking Character having a waiting period has to do with moving Internet Backdraft examples.

I've taken an axe to Internet Backdraft wicks in YMMV A-E. The pages still remaining have all been sent to the cutlist for having IB as the only example on the page.

The one exception is YMMV/Anthem, which seems to be a ghost wick? It's showing up in the list of IB wicks despite not having IB on the page.

[up][up] The people in this thread did because this Audience Reaction in particular was being used for nearly anything and is a concept better served by non-Flame Bait sub-tropes.

I got rid of the Steven Universe wicks, but I'm left with two examples that don't fit under anything else, but are definitely part of some reaction:

  • Cartoon Network UK censored "We Need to Talk" by removing the more suggestive parts of Rose and Pearl's Fusion Dance, which they defended by claiming the show does not air with a PG rating in the UK, but many people believed they censored it because it was "gay". The fan community exploded in outrage over the censorship, and launched a petition to revert the edit. A similar situation occurred when Cartoon Network France dubbed out Ruby and Sapphire's flirting in "Hit The Diamond", again involving a petition, which actually changed their minds and caused CN France to redub the episode to put the flirting back in.
  • A number of fans were quite vocal about their disappointment due to a teaser image released a day before "Rocknaldo" aired, made to appear as if a new Gem was going to be introduced. Said new Gem ended up being Ronaldo's Gemsona. Although many guessed correctly ahead of time that this would be the case, many who didn't felt tricked afterwardsnote .

Censorship Backlash and Marketing Backlash, maybe?

For Paladins, would They Changed It, Now It Sucks! be a good fit for these?

Big list of Internet Backdraft examples
  • Internet Backdraft:
    • The OB44 update, which saw the introduction of Essence and Legendary cards, has not gone well with the playerbase at all. Prior to this update, all loadout cards could be either found in radiant chests (which are purchased with real money) or purchased using Gold, which is obtained by completing matches. However, this update changed card crafting so that cards are now bought with Essence, a currency that could only be obtained by getting duplicate cards from radiant chests (which can now be bought with Gold). Many players see this change as essentially taking a once-perfectly serviceable multiplayer FPS and turning it into a pay-to-win grindfest. You can probably see why this caused such an outcry, with many players vowing to never touch a Hi-Rez game again, and some anticipating a good portion of the playerbase migrating to similar games like Overwatch and Dirty Bomb en masse, particularly with the latter holding an "All Mercs Free" event the weekend after the OB44 fiasco. Fortunately, the massive backlash prompted Hi-Rez to balance the Essence and Gold systems based on feedback to be less of a grind and give out generous amounts of Essence to players to get them started. On top of that, they announced a double weekend afterwards, which doubled the amount of Gold and XP from matches and unlocked all champions for everyone. This generosity went over well with the playerbase.
    • When an upcoming champion is teased with animal imagery and is later revealed to be a human, fans get outraged because they believed that the new champion would be a Funny Animal like Pip and Drogoz. This has happened three times so far (Tyra, Maeve, and Strix) and each time has garnered outrage from people who've fallen for it.
This one could be cut with no problems
    • Arguably worse than the aforementioned OB44 patch is OB63, which, among overall well-received changes (a retooling of the log-in rewards system, rewarding people who played more vs. those who just logged in, rolling entire theme skins into one singular thing, rather than having to get the weapon and the champion skin separately) introduced the Gold Chest, a chest meant to, effectively, contain "basically everything". The upside? Some skins were available in there that weren't available all the time. The downside? It, unlike every other premium chest (it CAN be purchased for VIP points, but still), contains duplicates. And, arguably worse to some, rental skins, a temporary version of an existing skin that is also available as a permanent version in the very same chest. The overall "scummy" feeling of the Gold Chest left many, MANY people with a bad taste in their mouths as it veered to the ugly side of lootboxes a lot more than anything else in the game had prior. Also Vivian was generally received as a very uninteresting addition to the cast in terms of design and kit. The outrage got to the point that Hi-Rez decided to remove all rental skins and duplicates from the Gold Chest to quell the rage. On top of that, they included full skin sets in the Radiant Chest instead of individual pieces.
    • Then came the announcement for OB64, which significantly overhauled how cards work.
      • While the removal of the Essence currency and making every card free garnered positive response, there was much outrage over the removal of customizable 12-point loadouts in exchange for permanently upgrading cards via collecting duplicate cards from radiant chests and champion-specific chests. Having to get stronger cards solely by using RNG loot boxes and that beginner players would have weaker loadouts than older players gave off the feeling of the game becoming very grind-to-win. The fact that this will only effect Casual Play and that Competitive Play will not have varying card strengths made players think that Hi-Rez cares more about competitive players than casual, even though casual players make up most of the playerbase. Many players are advocating sending feedback while the patch is still in the Public Test Server in hopes of persuading the developers to change things before OB64 goes live.
      • Hardly helping was the fact that A)The new system was surprisingly similar to a "Talents" system Drybear suggested that wasn't implemented due to similar reasons, and B) The update also added new legendary cards that were so overpowered it wasn't even funny., among the more ridiculous ones being Inara's "Wrath of the Stagalla" note , Lex's "Fought The Law"note , Lian's "Death and Taxes"note , Makoa's "Davy Jone's Locker"note  and Tyra's "Burn, Monster!"note  However, most of these overpowered legendary cards got nerfs either in development or in a hotfix, and in some cases weren't as bad as they appeared at first glance.
      • The hate over the card system became so intense that gaming websites like IGN, Kotaku, and Jim Sterling created articles about it.
    • Viktor's redesign for OB 70. While most champion redesigns go over well and many Viktor players genuinely like Viktor's new clothes, his new face and hair are highly disliked. Fans of Viktor hate the idea of giving the grizzled war vet a younger face and think his longer hair looks ridiculous. While his original design still exists as an alternate skin, fans would rather have his old head attached to his new body.

The Author's Saving Throw example on that same page mentions the OB64 patch, so I don't want to just cut these out, since that would mean there would be no explanation of what OB64 was on the page and the AST example would become hard to understand.

Don't entirely agree with the dewicking, but fine — if anything, I'd like to see an effort to re-accommodate some of the valid examples under proper tropes whenever possible.

[up] Part of the cleanup involves relocating those examples, but I would again caution people that "snap" reactions to things are not the purpose of TV Tropes. We don't care about hot-off-the-press reactions to every meme, controversy, and news tidbit. Trope examples should be durable, and that means that any argument, scandal, or uproar should be given time to settle down before we document it.

Also, we care about the works, not the people making them. Examples should not be about what Alice the Actor or Dan the Director did in their personal lives, only about how these things affect their body of creative work. "Valerie the Voice Actor said something racist" is not an example of any trope and should be left off of the articles. "Valerie the Voice Actor was dropped from the cast because she said something racist", on the other hand, is valid content for us because of its impact on a work. However, if Valerie is hired back to the work later, our example will be stale. This is why you shouldn't rush to add these examples.

All I see is complete dewicking with nary an attempt to allocate valid entries under appropriate tropes. An example was the new Uncanny X-Men entry, where there was a big internet blowback over a mutant murder that was basically a trans-panic murder, I did fix that entry post-facto under Unfortunate Implications, including links to articles, but whoever dewicked, just deleted the thing whole cloth.

Dewicking seems to be more urgent than actually fixing the tropes, but... that's just how it appears to me.

And there is always someone who will take it upon himself. Always. Always. Always. I have become evil, but once I, too, was good...

First of all, this is not the place for that kind of decision. Second of all, Base-Breaking Character isn't going anywhere, we just had a vote to redefine and cutting it was near unanimously voted against.
